1 H ear this word, a lamentation, which I take up against you, O house of Israel.

Ustedes, pueblo de Israel, oigan este canto fúnebre que elevo por ustedes.

2 T he virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more arise: she is cast down upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

La virginal Israel ha caído, y no volverá a levantarse. Se halla postrada, en el suelo, y no hay quien la levante.

3 F or thus saith the Lord Jehovah: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left, for the house of Israel.

Porque así ha dicho el Señor: «La ciudad que salga con mil soldados volverá con sólo cien, y la que salga con cien volverá con sólo diez. Así será en todo Israel.»

4 F or thus saith Jehovah unto the house of Israel: Seek ye me, and ye shall live.

Pero también así ha dicho el Señor al pueblo de Israel: «Si ustedes me buscan, vivirán.

5 A nd seek not Bethel, neither go to Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.

Pero no me busquen en Betel, ni vayan a Gilgal, ni pasen por Berseba. Porque los de Gilgal serán llevados al cautiverio, y los de Betel serán exterminados.

6 S eek Jehovah, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour, and there be none to quench in Bethel.

Búsquenme a mí, el Señor, y vivirán. De lo contrario, arremeteré como un fuego contra la tribu de José, y la consumiré y no habrá en Betel quien pueda apagar el fuego.»

7 Y e who turn judgment to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,

Ustedes, los que convierten el juicio en amargura y arrojan por el suelo la justicia,

8 t hat made the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: Jehovah is his name.

busquen al Creador de las Pléyades y el Orión, al que convierte en luz las tinieblas y hace que el día se oscurezca como la noche; al que llama a las aguas del mar y las derrama sobre la faz de la tierra. ¡Su nombre es el Señor!

9 H e causeth destruction to break forth suddenly upon the strong, and bringeth destruction upon the fortress.

El Señor despoja de su fuerza al violento, y trae la ruina sobre sus baluartes.

10 T hey hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

Pero ustedes aborrecen a quienes los reprenden en las puertas de la ciudad; detestan a los que hablan con rectitud.

11 F orasmuch, therefore, as ye trample upon the poor, and take from him presents of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, and ye shall not drink the wine of them.

Por lo tanto, y puesto que ustedes ultrajan a los pobres y le cobran impuestos por su trigo, jamás habitarán las casas de piedra labrada que han construido, ni beberán jamás el vino de las hermosas viñas que plantaron.

12 F or I know how manifold are your transgressions and your sins mighty: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the needy in the gate.

Yo sé muy bien que ustedes son muy rebeldes, y que cometen grandes pecados; sé también que oprimen a la gente honrada, que reciben soborno, y que en los tribunales impiden que los pobres ganen su pleito.

13 T herefore the prudent shall keep silence in this time; for it is an evil time.

¡Vivimos en tiempos tan corruptos, que la gente prudente prefiere callar!

14 S eek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Jehovah, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye say.

Busquen lo bueno, y no lo malo, y vivirán. Así el Señor, el Dios de los ejércitos, estará con ustedes, como dicen que está.

15 H ate evil, and love good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Aborrezcan el mal; amen el bien. En los tribunales, impartan justicia. Tal vez entonces el Señor y Dios de los ejércitos tendrá piedad del remanente de José.

16 T herefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the Lord: Wailing shall be in all broadways; and they shall say in all the streets, Alas! alas! And they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.

Por lo tanto, así ha dicho el Señor y Dios de los ejércitos: «En todas las plazas habrá llanto, y en todas las calles se quejarán. Al labrador lo llamarán a guardar luto, y a los que sepan cantar endechas, a endechar.

17 A nd in all vineyards shall be wailing; for I will pass through the midst of thee, saith Jehovah.

Cuando yo pase en medio de ustedes, en todas las viñas habrá llanto.» —Palabra del Señor.

18 W oe unto you that desire the day of Jehovah! To what end is the day of Jehovah for you? It shall be darkness and not light:

¡Ay de los que anhelan que llegue el día del Señor! ¿Para qué quieren que llegue el día del Señor? Será un día de tinieblas, y no de luz.

19 a s if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

Será como cuando alguien huye de un león, y se topa con un oso. O como cuando alguien entra en su casa y, al apoyarse en la pared, una culebra le muerde la mano.

20 S hall not the day of Jehovah be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

El día del Señor no será de luz, sino de tinieblas. ¡Será un día sombrío, sin resplandor alguno!

21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

«Yo aborrezco sus fiestas solemnes. ¡No las soporto, ni me complacen sus reuniones!

22 F or if ye offer up unto me burnt-offerings and your oblations, I will not accept; neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fatted beasts.

Cuando me ofrezcan sus ofrendas y holocaustos, no los recibiré, ni miraré los animales engordados que me presenten como ofrendas de paz.

23 T ake away from me the noise of thy songs, and I will not hear the melody of thy lutes;

Alejen de mí la multitud de sus cantos. No quiero escuchar las melodías de sus liras.

24 b ut let judgment roll down as waters, and righteousness as an ever-flowing stream.

Prefiero que fluya la justicia como un río, y que el derecho mane como un impetuoso arroyo.

25 D id ye bring unto me sacrifices and oblations in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?

»¿Acaso en los cuarenta años en el desierto, ustedes los israelitas me ofrecieron sacrificios y ofrendas?

26 Y ea, ye took up the tabernacle of your Moloch, and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye had made to yourselves;

Al contrario, ¡llevaban en andas el tabernáculo de sus ídolos Moloc y Quiún, cuya estrella ustedes mismos se hicieron!

27 a nd I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith Jehovah, whose name is the God of hosts.

Por eso haré que a ustedes se los lleven más allá de Damasco.» —Palabra del Señor, cuyo nombre es el Dios de los ejércitos.
