1 B e not thou envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them;

No sientas envidia por los malvados ni busques estar en su compañía,

2 f or their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

porque en su corazón sólo piensan en robar y sus labios sólo hablan de cosas perversas.

3 T hrough wisdom is a house built, and by understanding it is established;

La casa se edifica con sabiduría y se afirma con inteligencia.

4 a nd by knowledge are the chambers filled with all precious and pleasant substance.

Sus alcobas se llenan con buen juicio, y con todo bien preciado y agradable.

5 A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

Es mejor ser sabio que ser fuerte; es mejor tener ciencia que mucha fuerza.

6 F or with good advice shalt thou make thy war; and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Porque la guerra se hace con buenos planes, y la victoria se obtiene con muchos consejos.

7 W isdom is too high for a fool: he will not open his mouth in the gate.

Para el necio, la sabiduría resulta inalcanzable; entre los consejeros, no abre la boca.

8 H e that deviseth to do evil shall be called a master of intrigues.

Al que sólo piensa en hacer el mal se le llama conspirador.

9 T he purpose of folly is sin, and the scorner is an abomination to men.

Los pensamientos del necio son pecado; todo el mundo aborrece a los burlones.

10 t hou losest courage in the day of trouble, thy strength is small.

Si en momentos difíciles te rindes, muy limitada es la fuerza que tienes.

11 D eliver them that are taken forth unto death, and withdraw not from them that stagger to slaughter.

Libera a los que marchan a la muerte; salva a los que están por ser ejecutados.

12 I f thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not, will not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that preserveth thy soul, he knoweth it; and he rendereth to man according to his work.

Tal vez digas: «Esto no lo sabíamos»; pero lo sabe el que pesa los corazones, lo sabe el que observa lo que haces, el que da a cada uno lo que merecen sus obras.

13 E at honey, my son, for it is good; and a honeycomb is sweet to thy taste:

Hijo mío, prueba la miel, que es buena; ¡dulce al paladar es la miel del panal!

14 s o consider wisdom for thy soul; if thou hast found it, there shall be a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

Así de dulce te será la sabiduría. Si la encuentras tendrás tu recompensa, y al final tu esperanza no se verá frustrada.

15 L ay not wait, O wicked, against the dwelling of the righteous; lay not waste his resting-place.

Tú, malvado, no aceches la tienda del justo ni saquees el lugar donde habita,

16 F or the righteous falleth seven times, and riseth up again; but the wicked stumble into disaster.

porque tal vez caiga el justo siete veces, pero otras tantas volverá a levantarse; en cambio, los impíos caerán en desgracia.

17 R ejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth;

No te alegres cuando caiga tu enemigo; que no se alegre tu corazón cuando él tropiece,

18 l est Jehovah see it, and it be evil in his sight, and he turn away his anger from him.

no sea que el Señor lo vea, y le desagrade, y deponga su enojo contra él.

19 F ret not thyself because of evil-doers, be not envious of the wicked:

No te enojes por causa de los malignos ni sientas envidia de los inicuos,

20 f or there shall be no future to the evil; the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

porque los malvados no tendrán buen fin; ¡la lámpara de los impíos se apagará!

21 M y son, fear Jehovah and the king: meddle not with them that are given to change.

Hijo mío, teme al Señor y al rey. No te juntes con gente rebelde,

22 F or their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

porque de pronto pueden ser castigados, ¡y quién sabe qué clase de castigo ellos dos pueden enviar sobre los rebeldes! Otros dichos

23 T hese things also come from the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

Éstos son también dichos de los sabios: No está bien discriminar a nadie en el juicio.

24 H e that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous, peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him;

Al que llama justo al malvado, los pueblos lo maldicen y lo odian las naciones;

25 b ut to them that rebuke shall be delight, and a good blessing cometh upon them.

pero quienes lo reprenden serán felices, y sobre ellos viene gran bendición.

26 H e kisseth the lips who giveth a right answer.

Dar una buena respuesta es como dar un beso en los labios.

27 P repare thy work without, and put thy field in order, and afterwards build thy house.

Comienza por preparar tus campos y por disponerte para la siembra, y después de eso construye tu casa.

28 B e not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and wouldest thou deceive with thy lips?

No des falso testimonio contra tu prójimo, ni prodigues lisonjas con tus labios.

29 S ay not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me, I will render to the man according to his work.

No digas: «Le haré lo que él me hizo. Le daré a ese hombre lo que se merece.»

30 I went by the field of a sluggard, and by the vineyard of a man void of understanding;

Pasé junto al campo del perezoso, junto a la viña del falto de entendimiento,

31 a nd lo, it was all grown over with thistles, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and its stone wall was broken down.

y vi espinos por todas partes; las ortigas cubrían toda la superficie y la cerca de piedras estaba por los suelos.

32 T hen I looked, I took it to heart; I saw, I received instruction:

Miré esto, y lo guardé en mi memoria; lo vi, y aprendí una lección.

33 — A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest!

Un poco de dormir, un poco de soñar, un poco de cruzarse de brazos para descansar.

34 S o shall thy poverty come a roving plunderer, and thy penury as an armed man.

Así vendrán tu necesidad y tu pobreza: como un vago, como un mercenario.
