1 A nd the children of Israel did evil in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

Los israelitas hicieron lo malo a los ojos del Señor, y durante siete años el Señor los dejó caer en manos de Madián.

2 A nd the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites the children of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

Los madianitas oprimieron con tanta crueldad a los israelitas, que ellos hicieron cuevas y refugios en los montes y en lugares inaccesibles.

3 A nd it came to pass when Israel sowed, that Midian came up, and Amalek, and the children of the east, and came up against them.

Y es que después de que los israelitas habían sembrado, venían los madianitas y los amalecitas, y los que habitaban al oriente, y los atacaban.

4 A nd they encamped against them, and destroyed the produce of the land, until thou come to Gazah, and they left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

Acampaban cerca de ellos, y destruían hasta Gaza los frutos de la tierra, y no les dejaban a los israelitas nada para comer, ni ovejas, ni bueyes ni asnos.

5 F or they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number; and they entered into the land to destroy it.

Venían en grandes multitudes, como si fueran una plaga de langostas, y acampaban con sus ganados y camellos, y devastaban la tierra.

6 A nd Israel was greatly impoverished because of Midian. And the children of Israel cried to Jehovah.

Por culpa de los madianitas, los israelitas se habían empobrecido demasiado, así que clamaron al Señor

7 A nd it came to pass when the children of Israel cried to Jehovah because of Midian,

por todo el mal que les causaban los madianitas. Ante su clamor,

8 t hat Jehovah sent a prophet to the children of Israel, who said to them, Thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel: I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

el Señor les envió un profeta, que les dijo: «Así dice el Señor, el Dios de Israel: “Yo los saqué de Egipto, donde eran esclavos.

9 a nd I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land,

Yo los libré del poder de los egipcios y de cuantos los afligían. A todos ellos los arrojé lejos de ustedes, y a ustedes les di su tierra.

10 a nd I said to you, I am Jehovah your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell. But ye have not hearkened to my voice.

Yo les confirmé que soy el Señor su Dios. Así que no tengan miedo de los dioses de los amorreos, que todavía están entre ustedes. Pero ninguno me obedeció.”»

11 A nd an angel of Jehovah came and sat under the terebinth that was in Ophrah, that to Joash the Abi-ezrite. And his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, to secure from the Midianites.

Entonces el ángel del Señor vino a Ofrá y se sentó debajo de una encina, que era propiedad de Joás el abiezerita. En ese momento Gedeón, el hijo de Joás, estaba en el lagar, sacudiendo el trigo para esconderlo de los madianitas.

12 A nd the Angel of Jehovah appeared to him, and said to him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

Y el ángel del Señor se le apareció y le dijo: «El Señor está contigo, porque eres un hombre valiente y aguerrido.»

13 A nd Gideon said to him, Ah my Lord, if Jehovah be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his miracles that our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? And now Jehovah hath cast us off, and given us into the hand of Midian.

Y Gedeón le respondió: «Señor mío, si el Señor está con nosotros, ¿cómo es que nos ha sobrevenido todo este mal? ¿Dónde están las maravillas que nuestros padres nos contaron, cuando nos decían que el Señor los había sacado de Egipto? ¡Pero ahora resulta que el Señor nos ha desamparado, y que nos ha entregado en manos de los madianitas!»

14 A nd Jehovah looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of Midian. Have not I sent thee?

El Señor lo miró fijamente, y le dijo: «Con esa misma fuerza que demuestras, vas a salvar a Israel del poder de los madianitas. ¿Acaso no soy yo quien te está enviando?»

15 A nd he said to him, Ah Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my thousand is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

Pero Gedeón le respondió: «Mi señor, ¿y cómo voy a salvar a Israel? ¡Yo soy de la familia más pobre que hay en Manasés, y en la casa de mi padre soy el más pequeño!»

16 A nd Jehovah said to him, I will certainly be with thee; and thou shalt smite Midian as one man.

El Señor le dijo: «Confía en mí, porque yo estoy contigo. Tú derrotarás a los madianitas como si se tratara de un solo hombre.»

17 A nd he said to him, If now I have found favour in thine eyes, shew me a sign that it is thou who talkest with me.

Pero Gedeón respondió: «Si en verdad cuento con tu favor, yo te ruego que me des una señal clara de que has hablado conmigo.

18 D epart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

Por favor, no te muevas de aquí hasta que yo vuelva y te presente la ofrenda que tengo para ti.» Y el Señor le respondió: «Esperaré a que vuelvas.»

19 A nd Gideon went in, and made ready a kid of the goats, and an ephah of flour in unleavened cakes: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the terebinth, and presented it.

Gedeón fue entonces y preparó un cabrito; tomó veinte litros de harina para hacer panes sin levadura, y luego puso la carne en un canastillo y el caldo en una olla, y todo esto lo llevó y lo puso debajo de la encina.

20 A nd the Angel of God said to him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

Allí el ángel de Dios le dijo: «Toma la carne y los panes sin levadura, y ponlos sobre la peña, y sobre ella derrama el caldo.» Gedeón lo hizo así.

21 A nd the Angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. And the Angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight.

Entonces el ángel del Señor extendió el bastón que tenía en la mano, y con la punta tocó la carne y los panes sin levadura. Al instante brotó fuego de la peña, y consumió la carne y los panes sin levadura, y el ángel del Señor desapareció de su vista.

22 A nd Gideon perceived that he was an angel of Jehovah; and Gideon said, Alas, Lord Jehovah! for because I have seen an angel of Jehovah face to face …

Gedeón comprendió que había visto al ángel del Señor y exclamó: «¡Ay, mi Señor y Dios, que he visto a tu ángel cara a cara!»

23 A nd Jehovah said to him, Peace be unto thee: fear not; thou shalt not die.

Pero el Señor le dijo: «La paz sea contigo. No tengas miedo, que no vas a morir.»

24 A nd Gideon built there an altar to Jehovah, and called it Jehovah-shalom. To this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

Allí, Gedeón edificó un altar al Señor y lo llamó «El Señor es la paz», y hasta el día de hoy este altar puede verse en Ofrá de los abiezeritas.

25 A nd it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said to him, Take the young bullock, which thy father hath, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

Esa misma noche, el Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Ve y toma el toro de siete años, es decir, el segundo del hato de tu padre; luego derriba el altar que tu padre levantó en honor de Baal, y derriba también la imagen de Asera que está junto al altar.

26 a nd build an altar to Jehovah thy God upon the top of this strong place in the ordered manner, and take the second bullock, and offer up a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah that thou shalt cut down.

Luego, en un lugar conveniente, en la cumbre de este peñasco, edifica un altar al Señor tu Dios, y cuando hayas tomado el segundo toro, con la madera de la imagen de Asera que derribaste me lo ofrecerás como holocausto.»

27 A nd Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Jehovah had said to him. And it came to pass, because he feared his father's house, and the men of the city, if he did it by day, that he did it by night.

Gedeón llamó entonces a diez de sus siervos, y cumplió con lo que el Señor le había ordenado. Pero lo hizo de noche, pues temía hacerlo de día porque lo podían ver la familia de su padre y la gente de la ciudad.

28 A nd when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered up upon the altar that was built.

A la mañana siguiente, cuando todos se levantaron, vieron que el altar de Baal había sido derribado, que la imagen de Asera que estaba a su lado había sido destrozada, y que el segundo toro había sido ofrecido en holocausto sobre el nuevo altar.

29 A nd they said one to another, Who has done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.

Y unos a otros se preguntaban quién podía haberlo hecho. Luego de investigar, supieron que lo había hecho Gedeón, el hijo de Joás. Entonces fueron a ver a Joás y le dijeron:

30 A nd the men of the city said to Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.

«Entréganos a tu hijo para matarlo, porque derribó el altar de Baal y destrozó la imagen de Asera que estaba a su lado.»

31 A nd Joash said to all that stood near him, Will ye contend for Baal? or will ye save him? he that contends for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning. If he be a god, let him plead for himself, because they have broken down his altar.

Y Joás les respondió: «¿Quieren luchar en favor de Baal y defender su causa? El que esté a su favor, que muera esta mañana. Si en verdad Baal es un dios, déjenlo que luche él mismo contra quien derribó su altar.»

32 A nd on that day they called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead with him, because he has broken down his altar.

Ese día a Gedeón se le llamó Yerubaal, es decir: «Que luche Baal contra él», porque había derribado su altar.

33 A nd all Midian and Amalek and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

Mientras tanto, los madianitas, los amalecitas y los del oriente se aliaron y, luego de cruzar el río, acamparon en el valle de Jezrel.

34 A nd the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon, and he blew the trumpet, and the Abi-ezrites were gathered after him.

Entonces el espíritu del Señor vino sobre Gedeón y, cuando éste hizo sonar el cuerno, los abiezeritas se le unieron.

35 A nd he sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and they also were gathered after him; and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

Además, Gedeón envió mensajeros a las tribus de Manasés, Aser, Zabulón y Neftalí, y ellas también se le unieron y salieron a su encuentro.

36 A nd Gideon said to God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,

Entonces Gedeón le dijo a Dios: «Si vas a salvar a Israel por medio de mí, como lo has prometido,

37 b ehold, I put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if dew shall be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said.

déjame poner en la era un vellón de lana. Si al amanecer hay rocío sobre el vellón, pero a su alrededor el suelo está seco, con eso entenderé que tú salvarás a Israel por medio de mí, como lo has prometido.»

38 A nd it was so. And when he rose up early on the morrow, he pressed the fleece together, and wrung dew out of the fleece, a bowl-full of water.

Y así sucedió. Cuando Gedeón se levantó, exprimió el vellón, y con el rocío que sacó llenó un tazón de agua.

39 A nd Gideon said to God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once! Let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it, I pray thee, be dry upon the fleece only, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

Pero Gedeón volvió a decirle al Señor: «No te enojes conmigo, Señor, si insisto, pero quiero hacer otra prueba con el vellón. Te ruego que esta vez sólo el vellón quede seco, y que alrededor de él haya rocío en el suelo.»

40 A nd God did so that night, and it was dry upon the fleece only, but on all the ground there was dew.

Y esa misma noche Dios lo hizo así: sólo el vellón quedó seco, y sobre el suelo había rocío.
