1 A nd what Samuel had said happened to all Israel. And Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

La palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo el pueblo de Israel. Por esos días Israel salió a entablar combate contra los filisteos, y acampó junto a Ebenezer, mientras que los filisteos acamparon en Afec.

2 A nd the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and the battle spread, and Israel was routed before the Philistines; and they slew in battle array in the field about four thousand men.

Los filisteos presentaron una cerrada batalla contra Israel, y lo vencieron, matando como a cuatro mil hombres.

3 A nd the people came into the camp; and the elders of Israel said, Why has Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch ourselves the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of Shiloh, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.

Cuando el pueblo volvió al campamento, los ancianos israelitas preguntaron: «¿Por qué permitió el Señor que los filisteos nos vencieran? Vayamos a Silo, donde está el arca del Señor. Ella tiene que acompañarnos siempre, para que nos salve de nuestros enemigos.»

4 S o the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of hosts, who sitteth between the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there by the ark of the covenant of God.

Entonces el pueblo mandó traer de Silo el arca del pacto del Señor de los ejércitos, que habita entre los querubines. Jofní y Finés, los dos hijos de Elí, resguardaban en Silo el arca del pacto de Dios.

5 A nd it came to pass when the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, that all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth shook.

Cuando el arca del pacto del Señor llegó al campamento, todo el pueblo de Israel gritó con tanto júbilo que la tierra se estremeció.

6 A nd the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, and said, What is the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Jehovah had come into the camp.

Al oír los gritos, los filisteos se preguntaron: «¿Por qué hay tantas voces de júbilo en el campamento de los hebreos?» Y al saber que el arca del pacto del Señor había llegado allí,

7 A nd the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there has not been such a thing heretofore.

con mucho miedo dijeron: «¡Dios ha venido al campamento! ¿Qué va a ser de nosotros? ¡Nunca antes nos había pasado algo así!

8 W oe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará del poder de este Dios tan poderoso? ¡Fue él quien castigó a los egipcios con plagas en el desierto!

9 S hew yourselves valiant and be men, ye Philistines, that ye may not have to be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been servants to you: be men, and fight.

Hermanos filisteos, tenemos que luchar con valor para no convertirnos en esclavos de los hebreos, como ellos lo han sido de nosotros. ¡Portémonos varonilmente, y peleemos!»

10 A nd the Philistines fought, and Israel was routed, and they fled every man to his tent; and there was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

Y los filisteos pelearon y vencieron a los israelitas, y los hicieron huir a sus tiendas. Fue tan grande la mortandad que ese día cayeron treinta mil israelitas de infantería.

11 A nd the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

Además, los filisteos se llevaron el arca de Dios, y mataron a Jofní y Finés, los dos hijos de Elí.

12 A nd there ran a man of Benjamin out of the battle, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent and with earth upon his head.

Pero ese mismo día uno de los descendientes de Benjamín salió corriendo de la batalla y llegó a Silo. Llevaba rasgada la ropa, y su cabeza estaba cubierta de tierra.

13 A nd when he came, behold, Eli was sitting upon the seat by the way-side watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And the man came to tell it in the city, and all the city cried out.

Cuando llegó, Elí estaba en una silla vigilando el camino, pues estaba muy acongojado porque se habían llevado el arca de Dios. Cuando aquel hombre llegó a la ciudad, y contó lo que había pasado en la batalla, toda la ciudad se puso a gritar.

14 A nd Eli heard the noise of the crying, and said, What is the noise of this tumult? And the man came hastily, and told Eli.

Elí oyó la gritería, y preguntó: «¿Por qué hay tanto alboroto?» Aquel hombre fue y le dio la noticia.

15 N ow Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were set, that he could not see.

Elí tenía noventa y ocho años, y la vista se le había apagado, así que ya no podía ver.

16 A nd the man said to Eli, I am he that came out of the battle, and I have fled to-day out of the battle. And he said, What has taken place, my son?

Y ésta fue la noticia que recibió: «Vengo de pelear contra los filisteos, pero logré escapar.» Y Elí preguntó: «¿Qué fue lo que pasó, hijo mío?»

17 A nd the messenger answered and said, Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

Y el mensajero le respondió: «Los soldados de Israel fueron vencidos, y huyeron de los filisteos. Hubo muchos muertos entre el pueblo, entre ellos tus dos hijos, Jofní y Finés. Además, los filisteos se llevaron el arca de Dios.»

18 A nd it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died; for the man was old, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

Cuando el hombre dijo que el arca de Dios había sido capturada, Elí se fue de espaldas y se cayó de la silla, cerca de la entrada del templo, y se desnucó y murió, pues ya era viejo y estaba pesado. Durante cuarenta años había gobernado al pueblo de Israel.

19 A nd his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

Su nuera, la mujer de Finés, estaba encinta y cercana al parto, y cuando oyó que el arca de Dios había sido capturada, y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se impresionó tanto que le vinieron los dolores de un parto mortal, y allí mismo dio a luz.

20 A nd as she was dying, the women that stood by her said, Fear not; for thou hast borne a son. But she did not answer, neither did she take it to heart.

Poco antes de morir, las parteras le dijeron: «Ten ánimo, pues has dado a luz un niño.» Pero ella no respondió, ni se dio por enterada.

21 A nd she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

Pero al niño le puso por nombre Icabod, pues dijo: «¡La gloria de Israel ha sido deshonrada!», porque el arca de Dios había sido capturada, y su suegro y su marido habían muerto.

22 A nd she said, The glory is departed from Israel, for the ark of God is taken.

Por eso dijo: «La gloria de Israel ha sido deshonrada, pues han capturado el arca de Dios.»
