1 A nd it came to pass when Sanballat, and Tobijah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though at that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),

»Cuando Sambalat, Tobías, Guesén el árabe, y nuestros otros enemigos supieron que habíamos terminado de reconstruir las murallas, y que se habían tapiado todas sus brechas (aunque aún no habíamos colocado las puertas de madera),

2 t hat Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, Come, let us meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.

me mandaron un mensaje que decía: “Queremos reunirnos contigo en alguna de las aldeas del campo de Onó.” »En realidad, lo que ellos querían era hacerme daño,

3 A nd I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down. Why should the work cease, whilst I leave it and come down to you?

así que mandé a decirles: “No me es posible ir, porque estoy en medio de una gran obra. Si fuera yo a reunirme con ustedes, el trabajo se detendría.”

4 A nd they sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them in the same manner.

Y aunque ellos insistieron hasta cuatro veces, mi respuesta fue siempre la misma.

5 T hen sent Sanballat his servant to me in this manner the fifth time, with an open letter in his hand,

»Pero Sambalat insistió una quinta vez, y me envió a un criado suyo con una carta abierta,

6 i n which was written: It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says thou and the Jews think to rebel, for which cause thou buildest the wall, and according to these words thou wilt become their king.

la cual decía: “Ha llegado a nuestras ciudades el rumor, y Guesén lo confirma, de que los judíos y tú piensan rebelarse, y que por eso estás reconstruyendo las murallas de Jerusalén. Según este rumor, tienes la intención de proclamarte rey,

7 A nd thou hast also appointed prophets to proclaim concerning thee at Jerusalem saying, There is a king in Judah! And now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.

y hasta te has rodeado de profetas para que proclamen en Jerusalén que Judá ya tiene rey. Ten cuidado, porque esto puede llegar a oídos del rey. Así que ven a hablar con nosotros, para aclarar este asunto.”

8 A nd I sent to him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.

»Yo le respondí: “Esto que dices no es verdad. Tú mismo lo has inventado.”

9 F or they all would have made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be slackened from the work, that it be not carried out.—Now therefore strengthen my hands!

»Y es que nuestros enemigos querían amedrentarnos, y desanimarnos para que no termináramos las obras de restauración. »Dios mío, ¡fortalece mis manos!

10 A nd I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabeel, who had shut himself up. And he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they are coming to kill thee; even in the night are they coming to kill thee.

»Poco después fui a casa de Semaías, el hijo de Delaía y nieto de Mehitabel, que estaba encerrado en su casa. Al verme, dijo: “Te aconsejo que vayamos a la casa de Dios, y que cerremos las puertas, porque tengo entendido que esta noche tus enemigos vienen a matarte.”

11 A nd I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, could go into the temple, and live? I will not go in.

»Pero yo le dije: “Los hombres como yo no corren a esconderse. ¡Y menos en el templo! ¡No por salvar mi vida voy a esconderme!”

12 A nd I perceived, and behold, God had not sent him; for he pronounced this prophecy against me; and Tobijah and Sanballat had hired him.

»Y es que me di cuenta de que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que hablaba así porque Tobías y Sambalat lo habían sobornado

13 T herefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have wherewith to spread an evil report, that they might reproach me.

para amedrentarme y hacerme pecar, y para que ellos me difamaran y pudieran hablar mal de mí.

14 M y God, remember Tobijah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets who would have put me in fear.

»Dios mío, ¡toma en cuenta lo que Tobías y Sambalat están haciendo en mi contra! ¡Y no te olvides de la profetisa Noadías, ni de los otros profetas que intentaron amedrentarme!

15 S o the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.

»A pesar de todo, la muralla quedó terminada el día veinticinco del mes de Elul. Tardamos cincuenta y dos días.

16 A nd it came to pass that when all our enemies heard, all the nations that were about us were afraid and were much cast down in their own eyes, and they perceived that this work was wrought by our God.

Y cuando nuestros enemigos de los alrededores lo supieron, se llenaron de miedo, y humillados reconocieron que en la obra que habíamos hecho Dios había estado presente.

17 M oreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobijah, and those of Tobijah came to them.

»Por aquellos días se había intensificado el envío de cartas por parte de los jefes de Judá a Tobías, y de Tobías a ellos,

18 F or there were many in Judah sworn to him; for he was a son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.

porque muchos se habían vuelto sus aliados, ya que él era yerno de Secanías hijo de Araj, y porque Johanán, su hijo, se había casado con la hija de Mesulán hijo de Berequías.

19 A lso they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobijah sent letters to put me in fear.

En mi presencia alababan sus buenas acciones, pero iban a contarle todo lo que yo decía. Y Tobías me enviaba cartas intimidatorias.
