3 A nd he came into all the district round the Jordan, preaching baptism of repentance for remission of sins,

Juan fue entonces por toda la región cercana al Jordán, y predicaba el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de pecados,

4 a s it is written in book of words of Esaias the prophet: Voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of Lord, make straight his paths.

tal y como está escrito en el libro del profeta Isaías: «Una voz clama en el desierto: Preparen el camino del Señor y enderecen sus sendas.

5 E very gorge shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked shall become a straight, and the rough places smooth ways,

Todo valle será rellenado, y todo monte y colina será nivelado. Los caminos torcidos serán enderezados, las sendas dispares serán allanadas,

6 a nd all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

y todos verán la salvación de Dios.»

7 H e said therefore to the crowds which went out to be baptised by him, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?

A las multitudes que acudían para ser bautizadas, Juan les decía: «¡Generación de víboras! ¿Quién les enseñó a huir de la ira venidera?

8 P roduce therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say in yourselves, We have Abraham for father, for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

Produzcan frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comiencen a decirse: “Tenemos a Abrahán por padre”, porque yo les digo que aun de estas piedras Dios puede levantar hijos a Abrahán.

9 A nd already also the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into fire.

El hacha ya está lista para derribar de raíz a los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y echado en el fuego.»

10 A nd the crowds asked him saying, What should we do then?

La gente le preguntaba: «Entonces, ¿qué debemos hacer?»

11 A nd he answering says to them, He that has two body-coats, let him give to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

Y Juan les respondía: «El que tenga dos túnicas, comparta una con el que no tiene ninguna, y el que tenga comida, haga lo mismo.»

12 A nd tax-gatherers came also to be baptised, and they said to him, Teacher, what should we do?

También unos cobradores de impuestos llegaron para ser bautizados, y le preguntaron: «Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer nosotros?»

13 A nd he said to them, Take no more than what is appointed to you.

Él les dijo: «No cobren más de lo que deban cobrar.»

14 A nd persons engaged in military service also asked him saying, And we, what should we do? And he said to them, Oppress no one, nor accuse falsely, and be satisfied with your pay.

Unos soldados también le preguntaron: «Y nosotros, ¿qué debemos hacer?» Y Juan les respondió: «No extorsionen ni calumnien a nadie, y confórmense con su salario.»

15 B ut as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John whether he might be the Christ,

Como el pueblo estaba expectante y todos se preguntaban si acaso Juan sería el Cristo,

16 J ohn answered all, saying, I indeed baptise you with water, but the mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to unloose; he shall baptise you with Holy Spirit and fire;

Juan les dijo a todos: «A decir verdad, yo los bautizo en agua, pero después de mí viene uno que es más poderoso que yo, y de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de su calzado. Él los bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego.

17 w hose winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

Ya tiene el bieldo en la mano, de modo que limpiará su era; recogerá su trigo en el granero, y quemará la paja en un fuego que nunca se apagará.»

18 E xhorting then many other things also he announced glad tidings to the people.

Con exhortaciones como éstas, y con muchas otras, anunciaba al pueblo estas buenas noticias.

19 B ut Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him as to Herodias, the wife of his brother, and as to all the wicked things which Herod had done,

Además, Juan reprendió al tetrarca Herodes por causa de Herodías, que era mujer de su hermano Felipe. Pero a todas las maldades que Herodes había cometido,

20 a dded this also to all, that he shut up John in prison.

añadió esta otra: encerró a Juan en la cárcel. El bautismo de Jesús

21 A nd it came to pass, all the people having been baptised, and Jesus having been baptised and praying, that the heaven was opened,

Un día en que todo el pueblo estaba siendo bautizado, también fue bautizado Jesús. Y mientras Jesús oraba, el cielo se abrió

22 a nd the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove upon him; and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I have found my delight.
