1 A nd it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the face of the earth.

El tiempo pasó, y tres años después la palabra del Señor vino a Elías y le dijo: «Ve y preséntate ante Ajab. Voy a hacer que llueva sobre la tierra.»

2 A nd Elijah went to shew himself to Ahab. And the famine was severe in Samaria.

Elías se puso en marcha para hablar con Ajab. El hambre que azotaba a Samaria era terrible.

3 A nd Ahab called Obadiah, who was the steward of his house (now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly;

Ese día el rey llamó a Abdías, su administrador. Abdías era un hombre profundamente temeroso del Señor,

4 a nd it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and maintained them with bread and water);

pues cuando Jezabel mandó matar a los profetas del Señor, Abdías salvó a cien de ellos; formó dos grupos de cincuenta profetas, y los escondió en cuevas y les proveyó pan y agua.

5 a nd Ahab said to Obadiah, Go through the land, to all the fountains of water and to all the torrents, perhaps we may find grass to save the horses and the mules alive, so that we may not have to destroy some of beasts.

Ajab le dijo a Abdías: «Ve a recorrer todo el país. Busca manantiales con agua, y arroyos. Tal vez encontremos un poco de pasto para mantener vivos a los caballos y a las mulas. De lo contrario, nos quedaremos sin bestias.»

6 A nd they divided the land between them to pass through it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

Para recorrer el país, lo dividieron en dos partes; Ajab se fue por un lado, y Abdías se fue por otro.

7 A nd as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him; and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it indeed thou, my lord Elijah?

En el camino, Abdías se encontró con Elías y, cuando lo reconoció, se inclinó de cara al suelo y le preguntó: «¿Acaso no eres tú mi señor Elías?»

8 A nd he said to him, I: go, say to thy lord, Behold Elijah!

Y Elías respondió: «Sí, yo soy Elías. Ve y dile a tu amo que aquí estoy.»

9 A nd he said, What have I sinned, that thou givest thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to put me to death?

Pero Abdías le preguntó: «¿Cuál es mi pecado? ¿Por qué quieres entregar a este siervo tuyo? Si caigo en manos de Ajab, ¡me matará!

10 A s Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom whither my lord has not sent to seek thee; and when they said, He is not, he took an oath of the kingdom or nation that they found thee not.

Te juro por el Señor, tu Dios, que mi amo no ha dejado de buscarte por todos los reinos y naciones, pero siempre le dicen que allí no estás. Y Ajab los ha obligado a jurar que en verdad no te han visto.

11 A nd now thou sayest, Go, say to thy lord, Behold Elijah!

¡Y ahora vienes tú y me ordenas que vaya y le diga al rey: “¡Aquí está Elías!”

12 A nd it shall come to pass when I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah shall carry thee whither I know not; and when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will kill me; and I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.

¿Sabes qué va a pasar? Que cuando yo vaya y le dé la noticia al rey, el espíritu del Señor te llevará a otro lugar que yo no conozca; y cuando el rey venga a buscarte, si no te halla, ¡seguramente me matará! Este siervo tuyo teme al Señor desde que era joven.

13 W as it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah's prophets by fifty in a cave, and maintained them with bread and water?

¿Acaso no te han dicho, mi señor, que cuando Jezabel estaba matando a los profetas del Señor, yo escondí a cien de ellos? A cincuenta los puse en una cueva, y a los otros cincuenta los puse en otra, y los alimenté con pan y agua.

14 A nd now thou sayest, Go, say to thy lord, Behold Elijah! and he will kill me.

¡Y ahora vienes tú y me ordenas que vaya y le diga a mi amo que estás aquí! ¿Acaso quieres que me mate?»

15 A nd Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will certainly shew myself to him to-day.

Entonces Elías le dijo: «Te juro por el Señor de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy, que hoy mismo me presentaré ante tu amo.»

16 T hen Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.

Entonces Abdías fue en busca de Ajab, y cuando lo encontró le dijo que el profeta Elías estaba allí, y Ajab vino al encuentro de Elías.

17 A nd it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Is it thou, the troubler of Israel?

Cuando lo vio, dijo: «¿Qué, no eres tú el que anda perturbando a Israel?»

18 A nd he said, I have not troubled Israel, but thou and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baals.

Y Elías le respondió: «Yo no ando perturbando a Israel. Lo perturban tú y la familia de tu padre, al apartarse de los mandamientos del Señor y seguir a las imágenes de Baal.

19 A nd now send, gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, who eat at Jezebel's table.

Pero ordena ahora que todo el pueblo se reúna en el monte Carmelo, junto con los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de Asera que Jezabel alimenta.» Elías y los profetas de Baal

20 S o Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

Ajab reunió en el monte Carmelo a todos los israelitas y a los profetas.

21 T hen Elijah drew near to all the people, and said, How long do ye halt between two opinions? if Jehovah be God, follow him; and if Baal, follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

Entonces Elías se paró frente a todo el pueblo, y dijo: «¿Hasta cuándo van a estar titubeando entre dos sentimientos? Si el Señor es Dios, síganlo a él; pero si piensan que Baal es Dios, entonces vayan tras él.» Y como el pueblo se quedó callado,

22 A nd Elijah said to the people, I, only I, remain a prophet of Jehovah; and Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

Elías volvió a decirles: «De todos los profetas del Señor, sólo yo he quedado; en cambio, Baal cuenta con cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas.

23 L et them therefore give us two bullocks: and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and put it on the wood, and put no fire; and I will sacrifice the other bullock, and put it on the wood, and put no fire.

Pero traigan dos toros: uno para los profetas de Baal, y otro para mí. Que corten ellos en pedazos el suyo y lo pongan sobre la leña, pero sin prenderle fuego; por mi parte, yo también cortaré en pedazos mi toro, y lo pondré sobre la leña, pero tampoco le prenderé fuego.

24 A nd call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the god that answers by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, The word is good.

Ustedes van a invocar el nombre de sus dioses, y yo también invocaré el nombre del Señor; y el Dios que responda y envíe fuego sobre el altar, que sea reconocido como el verdadero Dios.» Como todo el pueblo aceptó la propuesta,

25 A nd Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose one bullock for yourselves, and sacrifice it first; for ye are the many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire.

Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: «Como ustedes son más, escojan uno de los toros y córtenlo en pedazos. Pero no le prendan fuego. Invoquen entonces a sus dioses.»

26 A nd they took the bullock which had been given them, and sacrificed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, O Baal, answer us! But there was no voice, and none answered. And they leaped about the altar that had been made.

Los profetas tomaron el toro que se les dio y lo prepararon, y luego invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía. Decían: «¡Baal, respóndenos!» Pero aunque saltaban alrededor del altar, el silencio era total.

27 A nd it came to pass at noon that Elijah mocked them and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god; for he is meditating, or gone aside, or he is on a journey; perhaps he sleeps, and will awake.

Hacía el mediodía, Elías comenzó a burlarse de ellos, y les decía: «¡Griten más fuerte! Recuerden que es un dios. Tal vez estará meditando; o se encontrará ocupado; ¡o se habrá ido a otro lugar! ¡Tal vez esté dormido, y ustedes tengan que despertarlo!»

28 A nd they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with swords and spears, till the blood gushed out upon them.

Ellos gritaban más fuerte, mientras se hacían cortaduras en el cuerpo con cuchillos y con puntas de lanzas, hasta que la sangre les bañaba el cuerpo.

29 A nd it came to pass when midday was past, that they prophesied until the of the offering up of the oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any that answered, nor any attention.

Pero pasó el mediodía y los profetas seguían gritando, como en trance, hasta la hora en que se tenía que ofrecer el sacrificio, y no se escuchaba una sola voz; ¡el silencio era total!

30 T hen Elijah said to all the people, Draw near to me. And all the people drew near to him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah which was broken down.

Entonces Elías llamó a todo el pueblo, y les pidió que se acercaran a él. En cuanto el pueblo se acercó, él se puso a arreglar el altar del Señor, que estaba en ruinas;

31 A nd Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Jehovah came saying, Israel shall be thy name;

tomó doce piedras, una por cada tribu de los hijos de Jacob, a quien el Señor le cambió el nombre y le dijo: «Tu nombre será Israel.»

32 a nd with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah, and made a trench round about the altar, of the capacity of two measures of seed;

Con las doce piedras edificó un altar en honor al nombre del Señor, luego hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en donde cupieran dos medidas de grano,

33 a nd he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four pitchers with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.

preparó la leña y destazó el toro, y lo puso sobre la leña;

34 A nd he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

entonces pidió que llenaran cuatro cántaros con agua, y que la derramaran sobre el toro y sobre la leña, y aún pidió que volvieran a mojar el altar. Esto lo hicieron una y otra vez,

35 A nd the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

¡y el agua corría alrededor del altar, y hasta la zanja se llenó de agua!

36 A nd it came to pass at the offering up of the oblation, that Elijah the prophet drew near, and said, Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things by thy word.

Cuando llegó el momento de ofrecer el sacrificio, Elías se acercó al altar y dijo: «Señor, Dios de Abrahán, de Isaac y de Israel, demuestra hoy que tú eres el Dios de Israel y que yo soy tu siervo, y que solamente hago lo que tú me has ordenado hacer.

37 A nswer me, Jehovah, answer me, that this people may know that thou Jehovah art God, and thou hast turned their heart back again.

¡Respóndeme, Señor, respóndeme! ¡Que tu pueblo reconozca que tú, Señor, eres Dios, y que tú harás que su corazón se vuelva a ti!»

38 A nd the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

En ese momento cayó fuego de parte del Señor, y consumió el toro que allí se ofrecía, y la leña, las piedras, y hasta el polvo, ¡y aun secó el agua que inundaba la zanja!

39 A nd all the people saw, and they fell on their faces and said, Jehovah, he is God! Jehovah, he is God!

Cuando todos vieron esto, se arrodillaron y exclamaron: «¡El Señor es Dios, el Señor es Dios!»

40 A nd Elijah said to them, Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape! And they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the torrent of Kishon, and slaughtered them there.

Entonces Elías ordenó: «¡Capturen a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no escape ninguno!» Y el pueblo los capturó, y Elías los llevó al arroyo de Cisón y allí les cortó la cabeza. Elías ora por lluvia

41 A nd Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

Luego, Elías le dijo a Ajab: «Regresa ya a tu palacio, y come y bebe, que viene una gran tormenta.»

42 A nd Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.

El rey se fue a comer y beber, mientras que Elías subió a la cumbre del monte Carmelo. Allí se postró en tierra y hundió la cabeza entre las rodillas.

43 A nd he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up and looked, and said, nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

Luego le dijo a su criado: «Sube más arriba, y mira hacia el mar.» El criado subió, miró el mar y bajó a decir que no se veía nada; pero el profeta le ordenó que regresara siete veces más y mirara.

44 A nd it came to pass at the seventh time that he said, Behold there is a cloud, small as a man's hand, arising out of the sea. And he said, Go up, say to Ahab, Harness and go down, that the pour of rain stop thee not.

A la séptima vez, el criado dijo: «Veo que del mar se levanta una nube, pequeña como la palma de una mano.» Entonces Elías le dijo: «Corre y dile a Ajab que prepare su carro y se vaya, para que no lo ataje la tormenta.»

45 A nd it came to pass in the mean while, that the heavens became black clouds and wind, and there was a great pour of rain. And Ahab got on the chariot, and went to Jizreel.

Mientras Elías decía esto al criado, los cielos se llenaron de nubarrones, y comenzó a soplar un fuerte viento, y se desató una gran tormenta. Ajab partió de allí, y se fue a Jezrel,

46 A nd the hand of Jehovah was upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jizreel.

pero el poder del Señor estuvo con Elías, quien se ajustó la ropa y echó a correr, y llegó a Jezrel antes que el carro de Ajab.
