1 T o everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens:

Todo tiene su tiempo. Hay un momento bajo el cielo para toda actividad:

2 A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

El momento en que se nace, y el momento en que se muere; el momento en que se planta, y el momento en que se cosecha;

3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up;

el momento en que se hiere, y el momento en que se sana; el momento en que se construye, y el momento en que se destruye;

4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance;

el momento en que se llora, y el momento en que se ríe; el momento en que se sufre, y el momento en que se goza;

5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

el momento en que se esparcen piedras, y el momento en que se amontonan; el momento de la bienvenida, y el momento de la despedida;

6 A time to seek, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to cast away;

el momento de buscar, y el momento de perder; el momento de guardar, y el momento de desechar;

7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

el momento de romper, y el momento de coser; el momento de callar, y el momento de hablar;

8 A time to love, and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of peace.

el momento de amar, y el momento de odiar; el momento de hacer la guerra, y el momento de hacer la paz.

9 W hat profit hath he that worketh from that wherein he laboureth?

¿Qué provecho obtiene el que trabaja, de todos sus afanes?

10 I have seen the travail that God hath given to the sons of men to toil in.

Me he dado cuenta de la pesada carga que Dios ha impuesto a los mortales para humillarlos con ella.

11 H e hath made everything beautiful in its time; also he hath set the world in their heart, so that man findeth not out from the beginning to the end the work that God doeth.

En su momento, Dios todo lo hizo hermoso, y puso en el corazón de los mortales la noción de la eternidad, aunque éstos no llegan a comprender en su totalidad lo hecho por Dios.

12 I know that there is nothing good for them but to rejoice and to do well in their life;

Yo sé bien que para los mortales no hay nada mejor que gozar de la vida y de todo lo bueno que ésta ofrece,

13 y ea also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labour, it is the gift of God.

y sé también que es un don de Dios el que todo hombre coma y beba y disfrute de lo bueno de todos sus afanes.

14 I know that whatever God doeth, it shall be for ever; there is nothing to be added to it, nor anything to be taken from it; and God doeth, that should fear before him.

También sé que todo lo que Dios ha hecho permanecerá para siempre, sin que nada se le añada ni nada se le quite, y que esto lo hace Dios para que se le guarde reverencia.

15 T hat which is was long ago, and that which is to be hath already been; and God bringeth back again that which is past.

¿Qué hay ahora, que antes no existiera? ¿Y qué habrá de existir, que no exista ya? Dios hurga en el pasado. Injusticias de la vida

16 A nd moreover I saw under the sun, that in the place of judgment, wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, wickedness was there.

Además, me he dado cuenta de la maldad e iniquidad que existe donde debiera impartirse justicia y prevalecer el derecho.

17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

Y en mi corazón he concluido que Dios habrá de juzgar a los justos y a los injustos, porque hay un tiempo y un lugar para todo proyecto y para toda actividad.

18 I said in my heart, It is thus with the children of men, that God may prove them, and that they should see that they themselves are but beasts.

Dentro de mí concluyo que esto es así porque Dios quiere poner a prueba a los mortales, para que vean que ellos mismos son semejantes a las bestias.

19 F or what befalleth the children of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other, and they have all one breath; and man hath no pre-eminence above the beast: for all is vanity.

Porque lo mismo les pasa a los hombres y a las bestias: unos y otros respiran y mueren por igual, y nada tienen los hombres por encima de las bestias. Todo es vanidad.

20 A ll go unto one place: all are of the dust, and all return to dust.

Todo va a un mismo lugar. Todo está hecho de polvo, y todo al polvo volverá.

21 W ho knoweth the spirit of the children of men? Doth it go upwards? and the spirit of the beasts, doth it go downwards to the earth?

¿Hay quien sepa si el espíritu de los hombres se eleva a las alturas, mientras que el espíritu de las bestias desciende al fondo de la tierra?

22 A nd I have seen that there is nothing better than that man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion; for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?

Lo que he visto es, que no hay nada mejor para el hombre que disfrutar de su trabajo, porque eso es lo que le ha correspondido hacer. Porque ¿quién va a traerlo a ver lo que pasará después de su muerte?
