1 F or yourselves have known, brethren, our entrance in unto you, that it did not become vain,

Hermanos míos, ustedes mismos saben que nuestra visita a ustedes no fue en vano.

2 b ut having both suffered before, and having been injuriously treated (as ye have known) in Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the good news of God in much conflict,

También saben que, a pesar de haber sufrido y de ser maltratados en Filipos, Dios nos dio el valor necesario para anunciarles su evangelio, aun en medio de grandes peligros.

3 f or our exhortation not out of deceit, nor out of uncleanness, nor in guile,

Porque nuestra exhortación no se basa en el error ni en malas intenciones, ni tampoco tratamos de engañar a nadie,

4 b ut as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the good news, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who is proving our hearts,

sino que hablamos porque Dios nos aprobó y nos confió el evangelio. No buscamos agradar a los hombres, sino a Dios, que es quien examina nuestro corazón.

5 f or at no time did we come with speech of flattery, (as ye have known,) nor in a pretext for covetousness, (God witness!)

Como ustedes bien saben, nosotros nunca usamos palabras lisonjeras, ni hay en nosotros avaricia encubierta. Dios es nuestro testigo.

6 n or seeking of men glory, neither from you nor from others, being able to be burdensome, as Christ's apostles.

Tampoco hemos buscado recibir honores de ustedes, ni de otros ni de nadie, aun cuando como apóstoles de Cristo podríamos haberles pedido que nos ayudaran.

7 B ut we became gentle in your midst, as a nurse may cherish her own children,

En vez de eso, los hemos tratado con ternura, con el mismo cuidado de una madre por sus hijos.

8 s o being desirous of you, we are well-pleased to impart to you not only the good news of God, but also our own souls, because beloved ye have become to us,

Tan grande es nuestro cariño por ustedes, que hubiéramos querido entregarles no sólo el evangelio de Dios sino también nuestra propia vida. ¡A tal grado hemos llegado a amarlos!

9 f or ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail, for, night and day working not to be a burden upon any of you, we did preach to you the good news of God;

Hermanos, ustedes se acordarán de nuestros trabajos y fatigas, y de cómo noche y día nos dedicamos a predicarles el evangelio de Dios, sin ser una carga para nadie.

10 y e witnesses -- God also -- how kindly and righteously, and blamelessly to you who believe we became,

Ustedes son testigos, y Dios también, de que nos hemos comportado con ustedes los creyentes de manera santa, justa e intachable.

11 e ven as ye have known, how each one of you, as a father his own children, we are exhorting you, and comforting, and testifying,

Ustedes saben, además, que los hemos exhortado y consolado, como lo hace un padre con sus hijos,

12 f or your walking worthily of God, who is calling you to His own reign and glory.

y les hemos recomendado vivir con dignidad ante Dios, que los llamó a su reino y gloria.

13 B ecause of this also, we -- we do give thanks to God continually, that, having received the word of hearing from us of God, ye accepted, not the word of man, but as it is truly, the word of God, who also doth work in you who believe;

Por eso también nosotros siempre damos gracias a Dios de que, cuando ustedes recibieron la palabra de Dios que nosotros les predicamos, no la recibieron como mera palabra humana sino como lo que es, como la palabra de Dios, la cual actúa en ustedes los creyentes.

14 f or ye became imitators, brethren, of the assemblies of God that are in Judea in Christ Jesus, because such things ye suffered, even ye, from your own countrymen, as also they from the Jews,

Porque ustedes, hermanos, llegaron a ser imitadores de las iglesias de Dios en Cristo Jesús que están en Judea, ya que de parte de sus compatriotas sufrieron las mismas cosas que ellas padecieron de los judíos,

15 w ho did both put to death the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and did persecute us, and God they are not pleasing, and to all men contrary,

los cuales mataron al Señor Jesús y a sus propios profetas, y a nosotros nos expulsaron. Ellos no agradan a Dios, se oponen a todo el mundo,

16 f orbidding us to speak to the nations that they might be saved, to fill up their sins always, but the anger did come upon them -- to the end!

y a nosotros nos impiden predicar a los no judíos para que se salven. Con esto llegan al colmo de sus pecados, y se hacen acreedores a la ira más extrema. Ausencia de Pablo de la iglesia

17 A nd we, brethren, having been taken from you for the space of an hour -- in presence, not in heart -- did hasten the more abundantly to see your face in much desire,

Pero nosotros, hermanos, aunque estuvimos separados de ustedes por algún tiempo (físicamente, pero no en el corazón), hicimos todo lo posible para ir a verlos.

18 w herefore we wished to come unto you, (I indeed Paul,) both once and again, and the Adversary did hinder us;

Por lo tanto, quisimos ir a verlos, y yo mismo lo intenté varias veces, pero Satanás nos lo impidió.

19 f or what our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? are not even ye before our Lord Jesus Christ in his presence?

Porque ¿cuál es nuestra esperanza o gozo delante de nuestro Señor Jesucristo? ¿De qué corona puedo vanagloriarme cuando él venga, si no es de ustedes?

20 f or ye are our glory and joy.

Porque son ustedes el motivo de nuestro orgullo y de nuestro gozo.
