1 A nd Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for Shechem have all Israel come to cause him to reign.

Roboán fue a Siquén, porque en Siquén se había reunido todo Israel para hacerlo rey.

2 A nd it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's -- who in Egypt because he hath fled from the face of Solomon the king -- hearing, that Jeroboam turneth back out of Egypt;

Jeroboán hijo de Nabat estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido a causa del rey Salomón, pero cuando supo esto volvió de Egipto,

3 a nd they send and call for him, and Jeroboam cometh in, and all Israel, and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,

pues mandaron a llamarlo. Al llegar Jeroboán, él y todos los israelitas hablaron con Roboán y le dijeron:

4 ` Thy father made our yoke sharp, and now, make light of the sharp service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'

«Tu padre hizo muy pesado nuestro yugo. Aliviana un poco la dura servidumbre y el pesado yugo con que tu padre nos oprimió, y te serviremos.»

5 A nd he saith unto them, `Yet three days -- then return ye unto me;' and the people go.

Pero él les dijo: «Vengan a verme dentro de tres días.» En cuanto el pueblo se fue,

6 A nd king Rehoboam consulteth with the aged men who have been standing before Solomon his father in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'

el rey Roboán les pidió consejo a los ancianos que habían estado al servicio de Salomón, su padre, cuando éste vivía. Les dijo: «¿Qué me aconsejan ustedes responder a esta gente?»

7 A nd they speak unto him, saying, `If thou dost become good to this people, and hast been pleased with them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'

Ellos le contestaron: «Si te conduces bien con ellos, y eres de su agrado, y les hablas amablemente, ellos te servirán siempre.»

8 A nd he forsaketh the counsel of the aged men that they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, those standing before him,

Pero Roboán no hizo caso del consejo de los ancianos, sino que les pidió consejo a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y que estaban a su servicio.

9 a nd he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people that have spoken unto me, saying, Make light of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'

Les dijo: «¿Qué me aconsejan ustedes responder a esta gente? ¡Han venido a decirme: “Aliviana un poco el yugo con que tu padre nos oprimió”!»

10 A nd the lads who have grown up with him, speak with him, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light of our yoke; thus dost thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father;

Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le contestaron: «Pues a esa gente que ha venido a decirte: “Tu padre hizo muy pesado nuestro yugo, así que aliviana tú nuestra carga”, vas a decirle: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que el miembro viril de mi padre.

11 a nd now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I -- I add unto your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

Y si mi padre hizo pesado su yugo, yo voy a hacerlo aún más pesado; si mi padre los castigó con azotes, ¡yo los voy a castigar con látigos!”»

12 A nd Jeroboam cometh in, and all the people, unto Rehoboam on the third day, as the king spake, saying, `Return unto me on the third day.'

Al tercer día Jeroboán y todo el pueblo fueron a ver al rey Roboán, puesto que él les había dicho que volvieran tres días después.

13 A nd the king answereth them sharply, and king Rehoboam forsaketh the counsel of the aged men,

Pero el rey Roboán les respondió con aspereza, pues dejó de lado el consejo de los ancianos

14 a nd speaketh unto them according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I -- I add unto it; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

y les habló siguiendo el consejo de los jóvenes. Les dijo: «Si mi padre les hizo pesado su yugo, yo lo voy a hacer más pesado; si mi padre los castigó con azotes, ¡yo los voy a castigar con látigos!»

15 A nd the king hath not hearkened unto the people, for the revolution hath been from God, for the sake of Jehovah's establishing His word that He spake by the hand of Abijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.

Y el rey no le hizo caso al pueblo porque esto provenía de Dios, para que el Señor cumpliera lo que le había dicho a Jeroboán hijo de Nabat por medio de Ajías el silonita.

16 A nd all Israel have seen that the king hath not hearkened to them, and the people send back the king, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in a son of Jesse; each to thy tents, O Israel; now, see thy house -- David,' and all Israel go to their tents.

Al ver todos los israelitas que el rey no les había hecho caso, reaccionaron contra él y le dijeron: «¿Qué tenemos nosotros que ver con David? ¡No tenemos nada que ver con el hijo de Yesé! ¡Vamos, israelitas, regresen a sus campamentos! ¡Y tú, David, ocúpate de tu casa!» Fue así como todos los israelitas se fueron a sus tiendas.

17 A s to the sons of Israel who are dwelling in the cities of Judah -- Rehoboam reigneth over them.

Pero Roboán siguió reinando sobre los israelitas que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.

18 A nd king Rehoboam sendeth Hadoram, who over the tribute, and the sons of Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;

Luego el rey Roboán envió a Hadorán, que estaba a cargo de los tributos, pero los israelitas lo apedrearon, y así murió. Entonces el rey Roboán subió en su carro y a toda prisa huyó a Jerusalén.

19 a nd Israel transgress against the house of David unto this day.

Fue así como los israelitas se apartaron de la casa de David, hasta el día de hoy.
