1 A nd Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for Shechem have all Israel come to cause him to reign.

Roboão foi a Siquém, pois todo o Israel se congregara ali para fazê-lo rei.

2 A nd it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's -- who in Egypt because he hath fled from the face of Solomon the king -- hearing, that Jeroboam turneth back out of Egypt;

E Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, que estava então no Egito para onde fugira da presença do rei Salomão, ouvindo isto, voltou do Egito.

3 a nd they send and call for him, and Jeroboam cometh in, and all Israel, and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,

E mandaram chamá-lo; Jeroboão e todo o Israel vieram e falaram a Roboão, dizendo:

4 ` Thy father made our yoke sharp, and now, make light of the sharp service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'

Teu pai fez duro o nosso jugo; agora, pois, alivia a dura servidão e o pesado jugo que teu pai nos impôs, e nós te serviremos.

5 A nd he saith unto them, `Yet three days -- then return ye unto me;' and the people go.

Ele lhes respondeu: Daqui a três dias tornai a mim. Então o povo se foi.

6 A nd king Rehoboam consulteth with the aged men who have been standing before Solomon his father in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'

E teve o rei Roboão conselho com os anciãos, que tinham assistido diante de Salomão, seu pai, quando este ainda vivia, e perguntou-lhes: Como aconselhais vós que eu responda a este povo?

7 A nd they speak unto him, saying, `If thou dost become good to this people, and hast been pleased with them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'

Eles lhe disseram: Se te fizeres benigno para com este povo, e lhes agradares, e lhes falares boas palavras, então eles serão teus servos para sempre.

8 A nd he forsaketh the counsel of the aged men that they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, those standing before him,

Mas ele deixou o conselho que os anciãos lhe deram, e teve conselho com os jovens que haviam crescido com ele, e que assistiam diante dele.

9 a nd he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people that have spoken unto me, saying, Make light of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'

Perguntou-lhes: Que aconselhais vós que respondamos a este povo que me falou, dizendo: Alivia o jugo que teu pai nos impôs?

10 A nd the lads who have grown up with him, speak with him, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light of our yoke; thus dost thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father;

E os jovens que haviam crescido com ele responderam-lhe Assim dirás a este povo, que te falou, dizendo: Teu pai fez pesado nosso jugo, mas tu o alivia de sobre nós; assim lhe falarás: o meu dedo mínimo é mais grosso do que os lombos de meu pai.

11 a nd now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I -- I add unto your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

Assim que, se meu pai vos carregou dum jugo pesado, eu ainda aumentarei o vosso jugo; meu pai vos castigou com açoites; eu, porém, vos castigarei com escorpiões.

12 A nd Jeroboam cometh in, and all the people, unto Rehoboam on the third day, as the king spake, saying, `Return unto me on the third day.'

Veio, pois, Jeroboão com todo o povo a Roboão, ao terceiro dia, como o rei havia ordenado, dizendo: Voltai a mim ao terceiro dia.

13 A nd the king answereth them sharply, and king Rehoboam forsaketh the counsel of the aged men,

E o rei Roboão lhes respondeu asperamente e, deixando o conselho dos anciãos,

14 a nd speaketh unto them according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I -- I add unto it; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

falou-lhes conforme o conselho dos jovens, dizendo: Meu pai fez pesado o vosso jugo, mas eu lhe acrescentarei mais; meu pai vos castigou com açoites, mas eu vos castigarei com escorpiões.

15 A nd the king hath not hearkened unto the people, for the revolution hath been from God, for the sake of Jehovah's establishing His word that He spake by the hand of Abijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.

O rei, pois, não deu ouvidos ao povo; porque esta mudança vinha de Deus, para que o Senhor confirmasse a sua palavra, a qual falara por intermédio de Aías, o silonita, a Jeroboão, filho de Nebate.

16 A nd all Israel have seen that the king hath not hearkened to them, and the people send back the king, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in a son of Jesse; each to thy tents, O Israel; now, see thy house -- David,' and all Israel go to their tents.

Vendo, pois, todo o Israel que o rei não lhe dava ouvidos, respondeu-lhe dizendo: Que parte temos nós em Davi? Não temos herança no filho de Jessé: Cada um as suas tendas, ó Israel! Agora olha por tua casa, ó Davi! Então todo o Israel se foi para as suas tendas:

17 A s to the sons of Israel who are dwelling in the cities of Judah -- Rehoboam reigneth over them.

(Mas quanto aos filhos de Israel que habitavam nas cidades de Judá, sobre eles reinou Roboão.)

18 A nd king Rehoboam sendeth Hadoram, who over the tribute, and the sons of Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;

Então o rei Roboão enviou-lhes Hadorão, que estava sobre a leva de tributários servis; mas os filhos de Israel o apedrejaram, de modo que morreu. E o rei Roboão se apressou a subir para o seu carro, e fugiu para Jerusalém.

19 a nd Israel transgress against the house of David unto this day.

Assim se rebelou Israel contra a casa de Davi, até o dia de hoje.
