1 M y son! my law forget not, And my commands let thy heart keep,

2 F or length of days and years, Life and peace they do add to thee.

porque eles te darão longura de dias, e anos de vida e paz.

3 L et not kindness and truth forsake thee, Bind them on thy neck, Write them on the tablet of thy heart,

Não se afastem de ti a benignidade e a fidelidade; ata-as ao teu pescoço, escreve-as na tábua do teu coração;

4 A nd find grace and good understanding In the eyes of God and man.

assim acharás favor e bom entendimento ã vista de Deus e dos homens.

5 T rust unto Jehovah with all thy heart, And unto thine own understanding lean not.

Confia no Senhor de todo o teu coração, e não te estribes no teu próprio entendimento.

6 I n all thy ways know thou Him, And He doth make straight thy paths.

Reconhece-o em todos os teus caminhos, e ele endireitará as tuas veredas.

7 B e not wise in thine own eyes, Fear Jehovah, and turn aside from evil.

Não sejas sábio a teus próprios olhos; teme ao Senhor e aparta-te do mal.

8 H ealing it is to thy navel, And moistening to thy bones.

Isso será saúde para a tua carne; e refrigério para os teus ossos.

9 H onour Jehovah from thy substance, And from the beginning of all thine increase;

Honra ao Senhor com os teus bens, e com as primícias de toda a tua renda;

10 A nd filled are thy barns plenty, And new wine thy presses break forth.

assim se encherão de fartura os teus celeiros, e trasbordarão de mosto os teus lagares.

11 C hastisement of Jehovah, my son, despise not, And be not vexed with His reproof,

Filho meu, não rejeites a disciplina do Senhor, nem te enojes da sua repreensão;

12 F or whom Jehovah loveth He reproveth, Even as a father the son He is pleased with.

porque o Senhor repreende aquele a quem ama, assim como o pai ao filho a quem quer bem.

13 O the happiness of a man hath found wisdom, And of a man bringeth forth understanding.

Feliz é o homem que acha sabedoria, e o homem que adquire entendimento;

14 F or better her merchandise Than the merchandise of silver, And than gold -- her increase.

pois melhor é o lucro que ela dá do que o lucro da prata, e a sua renda do que o ouro.

15 P recious she above rubies, And all thy pleasures are not comparable to her.

Mais preciosa é do que as jóias, e nada do que possas desejar é comparável a ela.

16 L ength of days in her right hand, In her left wealth and honour.

Longura de dias há na sua mão direita; na sua esquerda riquezas e honra.

17 H er ways ways of pleasantness, And all her paths peace.

Os seus caminhos são caminhos de delícias, e todas as suas veredas são paz.

18 A tree of life she to those laying hold on her, And whoso is retaining her happy.

É árvore da vida para os que dela lançam mão, e bem-aventurado é todo aquele que a retém.

19 J ehovah by wisdom did found the earth, He prepared the heavens by understanding.

O Senhor pela sabedoria fundou a terra; pelo entendimento estabeleceu o céu.

20 B y His knowledge depths have been rent, And clouds do drop dew.

Pelo seu conhecimento se fendem os abismos, e as nuvens destilam o orvalho.

21 M y son! let them not turn from thine eyes, Keep thou wisdom and thoughtfulness,

Filho meu, não se apartem estas coisas dos teus olhos: guarda a verdadeira sabedoria e o bom siso;

22 A nd they are life to thy soul, and grace to thy neck.

assim serão elas vida para a tua alma, e adorno para o teu pescoço.

23 T hen thou goest thy way confidently, And thy foot doth not stumble.

Então andarás seguro pelo teu caminho, e não tropeçará o teu pé.

24 I f thou liest down, thou art not afraid, Yea, thou hast lain down, And sweet hath been thy sleep.

Quando te deitares, não temerás; sim, tu te deitarás e o teu sono será suave.

25 B e not afraid of sudden fear, And of the desolation of the wicked when it cometh.

Não temas o pavor repentino, nem a assolação dos ímpios quando vier.

26 F or Jehovah is at thy side, And He hath kept thy foot from capture.

Porque o Senhor será a tua confiança, e guardará os teus pés de serem presos.

27 W ithhold not good from its owners, When thy hand toward God to do.

Não negues o bem a quem de direito, estando no teu poder fazê-lo.

28 S ay not thou to thy friend, `Go, and return, and to-morrow I give,' And substance with thee.

Não digas ao teu próximo: Vai, e volta, amanhã to darei; tendo-o tu contigo.

29 D evise not against thy neighbour evil, And he sitting confidently with thee.

Não maquines o mal contra o teu próximo, que habita contigo confiadamente.

30 S trive not with a man without cause, If he have not done thee evil.

Não contendas com um homem, sem motivo, não te havendo ele feito o mal.

31 B e not envious of a man of violence, Nor fix thou on any of his ways.

Não tenhas inveja do homem violento, nem escolhas nenhum de seus caminhos.

32 F or an abomination to Jehovah the perverted, And with the upright His secret counsel.

Porque o perverso é abominação para o Senhor, mas com os retos está o seu segredo.

33 T he curse of Jehovah in the house of the wicked. And the habitation of the righteous He blesseth.

A maldição do Senhor habita na casa do ímpio, mas ele abençoa a habitação dos justos.

34 I f the scorners He doth scorn, Yet to the humble He doth give grace.

Ele escarnece dos escarnecedores, mas dá graça aos humildes.

35 H onour do the wise inherit, And fools are bearing away shame!

Os sábios herdarão honra, mas a exaltação dos loucos se converte em ignomínia.
