1 A nd it cometh to pass, in those days, when there is no king in Israel, that there is a man a Levite, a sojourner in the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he taketh to him a wife, a concubine, out of Beth-Lehem-Judah;

Aconteceu também naqueles dias, quando não havia rei em Israel, que certo levita, habitante das partes remotas da região montanhosa de Efraim, tomou para si uma concubina, de Belém de Judá.

2 a nd commit whoredom against him doth his concubine, and she goeth from him unto the house of her father, unto Beth-Lehem-Judah, and is there days -- four months.

Ora, a sua concubina adulterou contra ele e, deixando-o, foi para casa de seu pai em Belém de Judá, e ali ficou uns quatro meses.

3 A nd her husband riseth and goeth after her, to speak unto her heart, to bring her back, and his young man with him, and a couple of asses; and she bringeth him into the house of her father, and the father of the young woman seeth him, and rejoiceth to meet him.

Seu marido, levantando-se, foi atrás dela para lhe falar bondosamente, a fim de tornar a trazê-la; e levava consigo o seu moço e um par de jumentos. Ela o levou ã casa de seu pai, o qual, vendo-o, saiu alegremente a encontrar-se com ele.

4 A nd keep hold on him doth his father-in-law, father of the young woman, and he abideth with him three days, and they eat and drink, and lodge there.

E seu sogro, o pai da moça, o deteve consigo três dias; assim comeram e beberam, e se alojaram ali.

5 A nd it cometh to pass, on the fourth day, that they rise early in the morning, and he riseth to go, and the father of the young woman saith unto his son-in-law, `Support thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye go on.'

Ao quarto dia madrugaram, e ele se levantou para partir. Então o pai da moça disse a seu genro: Fortalece-te com um bocado de pão, e depois partireis:

6 A nd they sit and eat both of them together, and drink, and the father of the young woman saith unto the man, `Be willing, I pray thee, and lodge all night, and let thy heart be glad.'

Sentando-se, pois, ambos juntos, comeram e beberam; e disse o pai da moça ao homem: Peço-te que fiques ainda esta noite aqui, e alegre-se o teu coração.

7 A nd the man riseth to go, and his father-in-law presseth on him, and he turneth back and lodgeth there.

O homem, porém, levantou-se para partir; mas, como seu sogro insistisse, tornou a passar a noite ali.

8 A nd he riseth early in the morning, on the fifth day, to go, and the father of the young woman saith, `Support, I pray thee, thy heart;' and they have tarried till the turning of the day, and they eat, both of them.

Também ao quinto dia madrugaram para partir; e disse o pai da moça: Ora, conforta o teu coração, e detém-te até o declinar do dia. E ambos juntos comeram.

9 A nd the man riseth to go, he and his concubine, and his young man, and his father-in-law, father of the young woman, saith to him, `Lo, I pray thee, the day hath fallen toward evening, lodge all night, I pray thee; lo, the declining of the day! lodge here, and let thine heart be glad -- and ye have risen early to-morrow for your journey, and thou hast gone to thy tent.'

Então o homem se levantou para partir, ele, a sua concubina, e o seu moço; e disse-lhe seu sogro, o pai da moça: Eis que já o dia declina para a tarde; peço-te que aqui passes a noite. O dia já vai acabando; passa aqui a noite, e alegre-se o teu coração: Amanhã de madrugada levanta-te para encetares viagem, e irás para a tua tenda.

10 A nd the man hath not been willing to lodge all night, and he riseth, and goeth, and cometh in till over-against Jebus (It Jerusalem), and with him a couple of asses saddled; and his concubine with him.

Entretanto, o homem não quis passar a noite ali, mas, levantando-se, partiu e chegou ã altura de Jebus (que é Jerusalém), e com ele o par de jumentos albardados, como também a sua concubina.

11 T hey near Jebus, and the day hath gone greatly down, and the young man saith unto his lord, `Come, I pray thee, and we turn aside unto this city of the Jebusite, and lodge in it.'

Quando estavam perto de Jebus, já o dia tinha declinado muito; e disse o moço a seu senhor: Vem, peço-te, retiremo-nos a esta cidade dos jebuseus, e passemos nela a noite.

12 A nd his lord saith unto him, `Let us not turn aside unto the city of a stranger, that is not of the sons of Israel, thither, but we have passed over unto Gibeah.'

Respondeu-lhe, porém, o seu senhor: Não nos retiraremos a nenhuma cidade estrangeira, que não seja dos filhos de Israel, mas passaremos até Gibeá.

13 A nd he saith to his young man, `Come, and we draw near to one of the places, and have lodged in Gibeah, or in Ramah.'

Disse mais a seu moço: Vem, cheguemos a um destes lugares, Gibeá ou Ramá, e passemos ali a noite.

14 A nd they pass over, and go on, and the sun goeth in upon them near Gibeah, which is to Benjamin;

Passaram, pois, continuando o seu caminho; e o sol se pôs quando estavam perto de Gibeá, que pertence a Benjamim.

15 a nd they turn aside there to go in to lodge in Gibeah, and he goeth in and sitteth in a broad place of the city, and there is no man gathering them into the house to lodge.

Pelo que se dirigiram para lá, a fim de passarem ali a noite; e o levita, entrando, sentou-se na praça da cidade, porque não houve quem os recolhesse em casa para ali passarem a noite.

16 A nd lo, a man, an aged one, hath come from his work from the field in the evening, and the man of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he a sojourner in Gibeah, and the men of the place Benjamites.

Eis que ao anoitecer vinha do seu trabalho no campo um ancião; era ele da região montanhosa de Efraim, mas habitava em Gibeá; os homens deste lugar, porém, eram benjamitas.

17 A nd he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the man, the traveller, in a broad place of the city, and the aged man saith, `Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?'

Levantando ele os olhos, viu na praça da cidade o viajante, e perguntou-lhe: Para onde vais, e donde vens?

18 A nd he saith unto him, `We are passing over from Beth-Lehem-Judah unto the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim -- thence I, and I go unto Beth-Lehem-Judah; and to the house of Jehovah I am going, and there is no man gathering me into the house,

Respondeu-lhe ele: Estamos de viagem de Belém de Judá para as partes remotas da região montanhosa de Efraim, donde sou. Fui a Belém de Judá, porém agora vou ã casa do Senhor; e ninguem há que me recolha em casa.

19 a nd both straw and provender are for our asses, and also bread and wine there are for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man with thy servants; there is no lack of anything.'

Todavia temos palha e forragem para os nossos jumentos; também há pão e vinho para mim, para a tua serva, e para o moço que vem com os teus servos; de coisa nenhuma há falta.

20 A nd the old man saith, `Peace to thee; only, all thy lack on me, only in the broad place lodge not.'

Disse-lhe o ancião: Paz seja contigo; tudo quanto te faltar fique ao meu cargo; tão-somente não passes a noite na praça.

21 A nd he bringeth him in to his house, and mixeth for the asses, and they wash their feet, and eat and drink.

Assim o fez entrar em sua casa, e deu ração aos jumentos; e, depois de lavarem os pés, comeram e beberam.

22 T hey are making their heart glad, and lo, men of the city, men -- sons of worthlessness -- have gone round about the house, beating on the door, and they speak unto the old man, the master of the house, saying, `Bring out the man who hath come unto thine house, and we know him.'

Enquanto eles alegravam o seu coração, eis que os homens daquela cidade, filhos de Belial, cercaram a casa, bateram ã porta, e disseram ao ancião, dono da casa: Traze cá para fora o homem que entrou em tua casa, para que o conheçamos.

23 A nd the man, the master of the house, goeth out unto them, and saith unto them, `Nay, my brethren, do not evil, I pray you, after that this man hath come in unto my house, do not this folly;

O dono da casa saiu a ter com eles, e disse-lhes: Não, irmãos meus, não façais semelhante mal; já que este homem entrou em minha casa, não façais essa loucura.

24 l o, my daughter, the virgin, and his concubine, let me bring them out, I pray you, and humble ye them, and do to them that which is good in your eyes, and to this man do not this foolish thing.'

Aqui estão a minha filha virgem e a concubina do homem; fá-las-ei sair; humilhai-as a elas, e fazei delas o que parecer bem aos vossos olhos; porém a este homem não façais tal loucura.

25 A nd the men have not been willing to hearken to him, and the man taketh hold on his concubine, and bringeth out unto them without, and they know her, and roll themselves upon her all the night, till the morning, and send her away in the ascending of the dawn;

Mas esses homens não o quiseram ouvir; então aquele homem pegou da sua concubina, e lha tirou para fora. Eles a conheceram e abusaram dela a noite toda até pela manhã; e ao subir da alva deixaram-na:

26 a nd the woman cometh in at the turning of the morning, and falleth at the opening of the man's house, where her lord, till the light.

Ao romper do dia veio a mulher e caiu ã porta da casa do homem, onde estava seu senhor, e ficou ali até que se fez claro.

27 A nd her lord riseth in the morning, and openeth the doors of the house, and goeth out to go on his way, and lo, the woman, his concubine, is fallen at the opening of the house, and her hands on the threshold,

Levantando-se pela manhã seu senhor, abriu as portas da casa, e ia sair para seguir o seu caminho; e eis que a mulher, sua concubina, jazia ã porta da casa, com as mãos sobre o limiar.

28 a nd he saith unto her, `Rise, and we go;' and there is none answering, and he taketh her on the ass, and the man riseth and goeth to his place,

Ele lhe disse: Levanta-te, e vamo-nos; porém ela não respondeu. Então a pôs sobre o jumento e, partindo dali, foi para o seu lugar.

29 a nd cometh in unto his house, and taketh the knife, and layeth hold on his concubine, and cutteth her in pieces to her bones -- into twelve pieces, and sendeth her into all the border of Israel.

Quando chegou em casa, tomou um cutelo e, pegando na sua concubina, a dividiu, membro por membro, em doze pedaços, que ele enviou por todo o território de Israel.

30 A nd it hath come to pass, every one who seeth hath said, `There hath not been -- yea, there hath not been seen like this, from the day of the coming up of the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt till this day; set your upon it, take counsel, and speak.'

E sucedeu que cada um que via aquilo dizia: Nunca tal coisa se fez, nem se viu, desde o dia em que os filhos de Israel subiram da terra do Egito até o dia de hoje; ponderai isto, consultai, e dai o vosso parecer.
