1 A nd Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --

Então respondeu Elifaz, o temanita:

2 D oth a wise man answer vain knowledge? And fill an east wind his belly?

Porventura responderá o sábio com ciência de vento? E encherá do vento oriental o seu ventre,

3 T o reason with a word not useful? And speeches -- no profit in them?

argüindo com palavras que de nada servem, ou com razões com que ele nada aproveita?

4 Y ea, thou dost make reverence void, And dost diminish meditation before God.

Na verdade tu destróis a reverência, e impedes a meditação diante de Deus.

5 F or thy mouth teacheth thine iniquity, And thou chooseth the tongue of the subtile.

Pois a tua iniqüidade ensina a tua boca, e escolhes a língua dos astutos.

6 T hy mouth declareth thee wicked, and not I, And thy lips testify against thee.

A tua própria boca te condena, e não eu; e os teus lábios testificam contra ti.

7 T he first man art thou born? And before the heights wast thou formed?

És tu o primeiro homem que nasceu? Ou foste dado ã luz antes dos outeiros?

8 O f the secret counsel of God dost thou hear? And withdrawest thou unto thee wisdom?

Ou ouviste o secreto conselho de Deus? E a ti só reservas a sabedoria?

9 W hat hast thou known, and we know not? Understandest thou -- and it is not with us?

Que sabes tu, que nós não saibamos; que entendes, que não haja em nós?

10 B oth the gray-headed And the very aged among us -- Greater than thy father days.

Conosco estão os encanecidos e idosos, mais idosos do que teu pai.

11 T oo few for thee are the comforts of God? And a gentle word with thee,

Porventura fazes pouco caso das consolações de Deus, ou da palavra que te trata benignamente?

12 W hat -- doth thine heart take thee away? And what -- are thine eyes high?

Por que te arrebata o teu coração, e por que flamejam os teus olhos,

13 F or thou turnest against God thy spirit? And hast brought out words from thy mouth:

de modo que voltas contra Deus o teú espírito, e deixas sair tais palavras da tua boca?

14 W hat man that he is pure, And that he is righteous, one born of woman?

Que é o homem, para que seja puro? E o que nasce da mulher, para que fique justo?

15 L o, in His holy ones He putteth no credence, And the heavens have not been pure in His eyes.

Eis que Deus não confia nos seus santos, e nem o céu é puro aos seus olhos;

16 A lso -- surely abominable and filthy Is man drinking as water perverseness.

quanto menos o homem abominável e corrupto, que bebe a iniqüidade como a água?

17 I shew thee -- hearken to me -- And this I have seen and declare:

Escuta-me e to mostrarei; contar-te-ei o que tenho visto

18 W hich the wise declare -- And have not hid -- from their fathers.

(o que os sábios têm anunciado e seus pais não o ocultaram;

19 T o them alone was the land given, And a stranger passed not over into their midst:

aos quais somente era dada a terra, não havendo estranho algum passado por entre eles);

20 ` All days of the wicked he is paining himself, And few years have been laid up for the terrible one.

Todos os dias passa o ímpio em angústia, sim, todos os anos que estão reservados para o opressor.

21 A fearful voice in his ears, In peace doth a destroyer come to him.

O sonido de terrores está nos seus ouvidos; na prosperidade lhe sobrevém o assolador.

22 H e believeth not to return from darkness, And watched he for the sword.

Ele não crê que tornará das trevas, mas que o espera a espada.

23 H e is wandering for bread -- `Where it?' He hath known that ready at his hand Is a day of darkness.

Anda vagueando em busca de pão, dizendo: Onde está? Bem sabe que o dia das trevas lhe está perto, ã mão.

24 T errify him do adversity and distress, They prevail over him As a king ready for a boaster.

Amedrontam-no a angústia e a tribulação; prevalecem contra ele, como um rei preparado para a peleja.

25 F or he stretched out against God his hand, And against the Mighty he maketh himself mighty.

Porque estendeu a sua mão contra Deus, e contra o Todo-Poderoso se porta com soberba;

26 H e runneth unto Him with a neck, With thick bosses of his shields.

arremete contra ele com dura cerviz, e com as saliências do seu escudo;

27 F or he hath covered his face with his fat, And maketh vigour over confidence.

porquanto cobriu o seu rosto com a sua gordura, e criou carne gorda nas ilhargas;

28 A nd he inhabiteth cities cut off, houses not dwelt in, That have been ready to become heaps.

e habitou em cidades assoladas, em casas em que ninguem deveria morar, que estavam a ponto de tornar-se em montões de ruínas;

29 H e is not rich, nor doth his wealth rise, Nor doth he stretch out on earth their continuance.

não se enriquecerá, nem subsistirá a sua fazenda, nem se estenderão pela terra as suas possessões.

30 H e turneth not aside from darkness, His tender branch doth a flame dry up, And he turneth aside at the breath of His mouth!

Não escapará das trevas; a chama do fogo secará os seus ramos, e ao sopro da boca de Deus desaparecerá.

31 L et him not put credence in vanity, He hath been deceived, For vanity is his recompence.

Não confie na vaidade, enganando-se a si mesmo; pois a vaidade será a sua recompensa.

32 N ot in his day is it completed, And his bending branch is not green.

Antes do seu dia se cumprirá, e o seu ramo não reverdecerá.

33 H e shaketh off as a vine his unripe fruit, And casteth off as an olive his blossom.

Sacudirá as suas uvas verdes, como a vide, e deixará cair a sua flor como a oliveira.

34 F or the company of the profane gloomy, And fire hath consumed tents of bribery.

Pois a assembléia dos ímpios é estéril, e o fogo consumirá as tendas do suborno.

35 T o conceive misery, and to bear iniquity, Even their heart doth prepare deceit.

Concebem a malícia, e dão ã luz a iniqüidade, e o seu coração prepara enganos.
