1 ¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said,

Então respondeu Elifaz, o temanita:

2 S hould a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?

Porventura responderá o sábio com ciência de vento? E encherá do vento oriental o seu ventre,

3 S hould he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?

argüindo com palavras que de nada servem, ou com razões com que ele nada aproveita?

4 T hou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.

Na verdade tu destróis a reverência, e impedes a meditação diante de Deus.

5 F or thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

Pois a tua iniqüidade ensina a tua boca, e escolhes a língua dos astutos.

6 T hine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.

A tua própria boca te condena, e não eu; e os teus lábios testificam contra ti.

7 W ast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills?

És tu o primeiro homem que nasceu? Ou foste dado ã luz antes dos outeiros?

8 H ast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?

Ou ouviste o secreto conselho de Deus? E a ti só reservas a sabedoria?

9 W hat dost thou know that we do not? What dost thou understand, which is not in us?

Que sabes tu, que nós não saibamos; que entendes, que não haja em nós?

10 A mong us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.

Conosco estão os encanecidos e idosos, mais idosos do que teu pai.

11 A re the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?

Porventura fazes pouco caso das consolações de Deus, ou da palavra que te trata benignamente?

12 W hy does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,

Por que te arrebata o teu coração, e por que flamejam os teus olhos,

13 t hat thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth?

de modo que voltas contra Deus o teú espírito, e deixas sair tais palavras da tua boca?

14 W hat is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?

Que é o homem, para que seja puro? E o que nasce da mulher, para que fique justo?

15 B ehold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight.

Eis que Deus não confia nos seus santos, e nem o céu é puro aos seus olhos;

16 H ow much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

quanto menos o homem abominável e corrupto, que bebe a iniqüidade como a água?

17 ¶ Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that which I have seen,

Escuta-me e to mostrarei; contar-te-ei o que tenho visto

18 t hat which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid it,

(o que os sábios têm anunciado e seus pais não o ocultaram;

19 u nto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

aos quais somente era dada a terra, não havendo estranho algum passado por entre eles);

20 T he wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent.

Todos os dias passa o ímpio em angústia, sim, todos os anos que estão reservados para o opressor.

21 F earful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

O sonido de terrores está nos seus ouvidos; na prosperidade lhe sobrevém o assolador.

22 H e will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.

Ele não crê que tornará das trevas, mas que o espera a espada.

23 H e wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.

Anda vagueando em busca de pão, dizendo: Onde está? Bem sabe que o dia das trevas lhe está perto, ã mão.

24 T ribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

Amedrontam-no a angústia e a tribulação; prevalecem contra ele, como um rei preparado para a peleja.

25 B ecause he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty,

Porque estendeu a sua mão contra Deus, e contra o Todo-Poderoso se porta com soberba;

26 h e shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;

arremete contra ele com dura cerviz, e com as saliências do seu escudo;

27 f or he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks;

porquanto cobriu o seu rosto com a sua gordura, e criou carne gorda nas ilhargas;

28 a nd he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.

e habitou em cidades assoladas, em casas em que ninguem deveria morar, que estavam a ponto de tornar-se em montões de ruínas;

29 H e shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.

não se enriquecerá, nem subsistirá a sua fazenda, nem se estenderão pela terra as suas possessões.

30 H e shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.

Não escapará das trevas; a chama do fogo secará os seus ramos, e ao sopro da boca de Deus desaparecerá.

31 H e shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity.

Não confie na vaidade, enganando-se a si mesmo; pois a vaidade será a sua recompensa.

32 H e shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

Antes do seu dia se cumprirá, e o seu ramo não reverdecerá.

33 H e shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

Sacudirá as suas uvas verdes, como a vide, e deixará cair a sua flor como a oliveira.

34 F or the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

Pois a assembléia dos ímpios é estéril, e o fogo consumirá as tendas do suborno.

35 T hey conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.

Concebem a malícia, e dão ã luz a iniqüidade, e o seu coração prepara enganos.
