1 ¶ Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father, and the younger men as brethren,

Não repreendas asperamente a um velho, mas admoesta-o como a um pai; aos moços, como a irmãos;

2 t he elder women as mothers, the younger as sisters, with all purity.

3 ¶ Honour widows that are widows indeed.

Honra as viúvas que são verdadeiramente viúvas.

4 B ut if any widow has children or grandchildren, let those learn first to govern their house in piety and to recompense their parents, for this is honest and pleasing before God.

Mas, se alguma viúva tiver filhos, ou netos, aprendam eles primeiro a exercer piedade para com a sua própria família, e a recompensar seus progenitores; porque isto é agradável a Deus.

5 N ow she that is a widow indeed and desolate, trusts in God, and is diligent in supplications and prayers night and day,

Ora, a que é verdadeiramente viúva e desamparada espera em Deus, e persevera de noite e de dia em súplicas e orações;

6 b ut she that lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

mas a que vive em prazeres, embora viva, está morta.

7 T herefore command these things, that they may be blameless.

Manda, pois, estas coisas, para que elas sejam irrepreensíveis.

8 B ut if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Mas, se alguém não cuida dos seus, e especialmente dos da sua família, tem negado a fé, e é pior que um incrédulo.

9 L et a widow be placed on the list being not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man,

Não seja inscrita como viúva nenhuma que tenha menos de sessenta anos, e só a que tenha sido mulher de um só marido,

10 h aving a good testimony of good works, if she has brought up well her children, if she has exercised hospitality, if she has washed the feet of the saints, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

aprovada com testemunho de boas obras, se criou filhos, se exercitou hospitalidade, se lavou os pés aos santos, se socorreu os atribulados, se praticou toda sorte de boas obras.

11 B ut the younger widows refuse, for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they desire to marry,

Mas rejeita as viúvas mais novas, porque, quando se tornam le5

12 h aving condemnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

tendo já a sua condenação por haverem violado a primeira fé;

13 A nd reject also the idle, who have learned to wander about from house to house, and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

e, além disto, aprendem também a ser ociosas, andando de casa em casa; e não somente ociosas, mas também faladeiras e intrigantes, falando o que não convém.

14 I desire therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, govern the house, giving no occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

Quero pois que as mais novas se casem, tenham filhos, dirijam a sua casa, e não dêem ocasião ao adversário de maldizer;

15 F or some are already turned back after Satan.

porque já algumas se desviaram, indo após Satanás.

16 I f any faithful man or woman has widows, let them maintain them and let not the congregation be charged, that it may relieve those that are widows indeed.

Se alguma mulher crente tem viúvas, socorra-as, e não se sobrecarregue a igreja, para que esta possa socorrer as que são verdadeiramente viúvas.

17 ¶ Let the elders that govern well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in the word and doctrine.

Os anciãos que governam bem sejam tidos por dignos de duplicada honra, especialmente os que labutam na pregação e no ensino.

18 F or the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

Porque diz a Escritura: Não atarás a boca ao boi quando debulha. E: Digno é o trabalhador do seu salário.

19 A gainst an elder do not receive an accusation, unless there are two or three witnesses.

Não aceites acusação contra um ancião, senão com duas ou três testemunhas.

20 T hose that persist in sin rebuke before all, that the others may also fear.

Aos que vivem no pecado, repreende-os na presença de todos, para que também os outros tenham temor.

21 I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

Conjuro-te diante de Deus, e de Cristo Jesus, e dos anjos eleitos, que sem prevenção guardes estas coisas, nada fazendo com parcialidade.

22 L ay hands suddenly on no one, neither be partaker of the sins of others; keep thyself pure.

A ninguém imponhas precipitadamente as mãos, nem participes dos pecados alheios; conserva-te a ti mesmo puro.

23 D rink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.

Não bebas mais água só, mas usa um pouco de vinho, por causa do teu estômago e das tuas freqüentes enfermidades.

24 S ome men’s sins are manifest beforehand, before they come unto judgment, but to others they follow after.

Os pecados de alguns homens são manifestos antes de entrarem em juízo, enquanto os de outros descobrem-se depois.

25 L ikewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise cannot be hid.

Da mesma forma também as boas obras são manifestas antecipadamente; e as que não o são não podem ficar ocultas.
