1 ¶ Paul, slave of God, and apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness;

Paulo, servo de Deus, e apóstolo de Jesus Cristo, segundo a fé dos eleitos de Deus, e o pleno conhecimento da verdade que é segundo a piedade,

2 f or the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the times of the ages

na esperança da vida eterna, a qual Deus, que não pode mentir, prometeu antes dos tempos eternos,

3 a nd has manifested in due times. It is his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

e no tempo próprio manifestou a sua palavra, mediante a pregação que me foi confiada segundo o mandamento de Deus, nosso Salvador;

4 t o Titus, true son in the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus, the Christ, our Saviour.

a Tito, meu verdadeiro filho segundo a fé que nos é comum, graça e paz da parte de Deus Pai, e de Cristo Jesus, nosso Salvador.

5 ¶ For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou should correct that which is lacking and set in place elders in every city, as I had commanded thee:

Por esta causa te deixei em Creta, para que pusesses em boa ordem o que ainda não o está, e que em cada cidade estabelecesses anciãos, como já te mandei;

6 ¶ He who is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children who can not be accused of dissoluteness, nor insubordinate.

alguém que seja irrepreensível, marido de uma só mulher, tendo filhos crentes que não sejam acusados de dissolução, nem sejam desobedientes.

7 F or the bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God; not arrogant, not quick to anger, not given to wine, not hurtful, not greedy of dishonest gain,

Pois é necessário que o bispo seja irrepreensível, como despenseiro de Deus, não soberbo, nem irascível, nem dado ao vinho, nem espancador, nem cobiçoso de torpe ganância;

8 b ut a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, temperate, just, holy, gentle,

mas hospitaleiro, amigo do bem, sóbrio, justo, piedoso, temperante;

9 h olding fast the doctrine according to the faithful word, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

retendo firme a palavra fiel, que é conforme a doutrina, para que seja poderoso, tanto para exortar na sã doutrina como para convencer os contradizentes.

10 F or there are many insubordinate and vain talkers and deceivers of souls, especially those of the circumcision,

Porque há muitos insubordinados, faladores vãos, e enganadores, especialmente os da circuncisão,

11 w hose mouths it is expedient to stop, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain.

aos quais é preciso tapar a boca; porque transtornam casas inteiras ensinando o que não convém, por torpe ganância.

12 O ne of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, lazy bellies.

Um dentre eles, seu próprio profeta, disse: Os cretenses são sempre mentirosos, bestas ruins, glutões preguiçosos.

13 T his witness is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

Este testemunho é verdadeiro. Portanto repreende-os severamente, para que sejam são na fé,

14 n ot giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

não dando ouvidos a fábulas judaicas, nem a mandamentos de homens que se desviam da verdade.

15 F or unto the pure all things are pure, but unto those that are defiled and unfaithful, nothing is pure, but even their soul and conscience is defiled.

Tudo é puro para os que são puros, mas para os corrompidos e incrédulos nada é puro; antes tanto a sua mente como a sua consciência estão contaminadas.

16 T hey profess that they know God, but in works they deny him, being abominable and rebellious and reprobate unto every good work.

Afirmam que conhecem a Deus, mas pelas suas obras o negam, sendo abomináveis, e desobedientes, e réprobos para toda boa obra.
