1 ¶ And Abraham was old and well stricken in age, and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.

Ora, Abraão era já velho e de idade avançada; e em tudo o Senhor o havia abençoado.

2 A nd Abraham said unto his eldest slave of his house, who ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh,

E disse Abraão ao seu servo, o mais antigo da casa, que tinha o governo sobre tudo o que possuía: Põe a tua mão debaixo da minha coxa,

3 a nd I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of the heavens and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

para que eu te faça jurar pelo Senhor, Deus do céu e da terra, que não tomarás para meu filho mulher dentre as filhas dos cananeus, no meio dos quais eu habito;

4 b ut thou shalt go unto my country and to my kindred and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

mas que irás ã minha terra e ã minha parentela, e dali tomarás mulher para meu filho Isaque.

5 A nd the slave said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land, must I therefore bring thy son again unto the land from which thou didst come?

Perguntou-lhe o servo: Se porventura a mulher não quiser seguir-me a esta terra, farei, então, tornar teu filho ã terra donde saíste?

6 A nd Abraham said unto him, Beware that thou not bring my son there again.

Respondeu-lhe Abraão: Guarda-te de fazeres tornar para lá meu filho.

7 T he LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred and who spoke unto me and swore unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from there.

O Senhor, Deus do céu, que me tirou da casa de meu pai e da terra da minha parentela, e que me falou, e que me jurou, dizendo: Â tua o semente darei esta terra; ele enviará o seu anjo diante de si, para que tomes de lá mulher para meu filho.

8 A nd if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be free from this my oath; only do not bring my son there again.

Se a mulher, porém, não quiser seguir-te, serás livre deste meu juramento; somente não farás meu filho tornar para lá.

9 T hen the slave put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning that matter.

Então pôs o servo a sua mão debaixo da coxa de Abraão seu senhor, e jurou-lhe sobre este negócio.

10 ¶ And the slave took ten camels of the camels of his master and departed with the best of what his master had in his hand; and he arose and went to Ara-naharaim, unto the city of Nahor.

Tomou, pois, o servo dez dos camelos do seu senhor, porquanto todos os bens de seu senhor estavam em sua mão; e, partindo, foi para a Mesopotâmia, ã cidade de Naor.

11 A nd he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.

Fez ajoelhar os camelos fora da cidade, junto ao poço de água, pela tarde, ã hora em que as mulheres saíam a tirar água.

12 A nd he said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, to have a good encounter this day and show mercy unto my master Abraham.

E disse: Ó Senhor, Deus de meu senhor Abraão, dá-me hoje, peço-te, bom êxito, e usa de benevolência para com o meu senhor Abraão.

13 B ehold, I stand here by the fountain of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out for water:

Eis que eu estou em pé junto ã fonte, e as filhas dos homens desta cidade vêm saindo para tirar água;

14 A nd let it come to pass that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels to drink also; let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy slave Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shown mercy unto my master.

faze, pois, que a donzela a quem eu disser: Abaixa o teu cântaro, peço-te, para que eu beba; e ela responder: Bebe, e também darei de beber aos teus camelos; seja aquela que designaste para o teu servo Isaque. Assim conhecerei que usaste de benevolência para com o meu senhor.

15 A nd it came to pass before he had done speaking that, behold, Rebekah came out (who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother) with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

Antes que ele acabasse de falar, eis que Rebeca, filha de Betuel, filho de Milca, mulher de Naor, irmão de Abraão, saía com o seu cântaro sobre o ombro.

16 A nd the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, whom no man had known; and she went down to the fountain and filled her pitcher and was coming back up.

A donzela era muito formosa ã vista, virgem, a quem varão não havia conhecido; ela desceu ã fonte, encheu o seu cântaro e subiu.

17 T hen the slave ran to meet her and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.

Então o servo correu-lhe ao encontro, e disse: Deixa-me beber, peço-te, um pouco de água do teu cântaro.

18 A nd she said, Drink, my lord, and she hastened to let down her pitcher upon her hand and gave him drink.

Respondeu ela: Bebe, meu senhor. Então com presteza abaixou o seu cântaro sobre a mão e deu-lhe de beber.

19 A nd when she had finished giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also until they have finished drinking.

E quando acabou de lhe dar de beber, disse: Tirarei também água para os teus camelos, até que acabem de beber.

20 A nd she hastened and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water and drew for all his camels.

Também com presteza despejou o seu cântaro no bebedouro e, correndo outra vez ao poço, tirou água para todos os camelos dele.

21 A nd the man marveled at her in silence, to see whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not.

E o homem a contemplava atentamente, em silêncio, para saber se o Senhor havia tornado próspera a sua jornada, ou não.

22 A nd it came to pass as the camels had finished drinking that the man took a golden pendant of half a shekel weight and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold

Depois que os camelos acabaram de beber, tomou o homem um pendente de ouro, de meio siclo de peso, e duas pulseiras para as mãos dela, do peso de dez siclos de ouro;

23 a nd said, Whose daughter art thou? Tell me, I pray thee; is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in?

e perguntou: De quem és filha? dize-mo, peço-te. Há lugar em casa de teu pai para nós pousarmos?

24 A nd she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she gave birth unto Nahor.

Ela lhe respondeu: Eu sou filha de Betuel, filho de Milca, o qual ela deu a Naor.

25 S he said moreover unto him, We have both straw and fodder enough and room to lodge in.

Disse-lhe mais: Temos palha e forragem bastante, e lugar para pousar.

26 T hen the man bowed down his head and worshipped the LORD.

Então inclinou-se o homem e adorou ao Senhor;

27 A nd he said, Blessed be the LORD, God of my master Abraham, who has not lifted his mercy and his truth from my master, the LORD leading me in the way to the house of my master’s brethren.

e disse: Bendito seja o Senhor Deus de meu senhor Abraão, que não retirou do meu senhor a sua benevolência e a sua verdade; quanto a mim, o Senhor me guiou no caminho ã casa dos irmãos de meu senhor.

28 A nd the damsel ran and told those of her mother’s house these things.

A donzela correu, e relatou estas coisas aos da casa de sua mãe.

29 ¶ And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban; and Laban ran out unto the man to the fountain.

Ora, Rebeca tinha um irmão, cujo nome era Labão, o qual saiu correndo ao encontro daquele homem até a fonte;

30 A nd it came to pass when he saw the pendant and the bracelets upon his sister’s hands, she said, Thus spoke the man unto me; then he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the fountain.

porquanto tinha visto o pendente, e as pulseiras sobre as mãos de sua irmã, e ouvido as palavras de sua irmã Rebeca, que dizia: Assim me falou aquele homem; e foi ter com o homem, que estava em pé junto aos camelos ao lado da fonte.

31 A nd he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; why dost thou stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and the place for the camels.

E disse: Entra, bendito do Senhor; por que estás aqui fora? pois eu já preparei a casa, e lugar para os camelos.

32 T hen the man came into the house, and Laban ungirded his camels and gave straw and fodder for the camels and water to wash his feet and the men’s feet that were with him.

Então veio o homem ã casa, e desarreou os camelos; deram palha e forragem para os camelos e água para lavar os pés dele e dos homens que estavam com ele.

33 A nd they set food before him to eat, but he said, I will not eat until I have told my errand. And he said unto him, Speak on.

Depois puseram comida diante dele. Ele, porém, disse: Não comerei, até que tenha exposto a minha incumbência. Respondeu-lhe Labão: Fala.

34 A nd he said, I am Abraham’s slave.

Então disse: Eu sou o servo de Abraão.

35 A nd the LORD has blessed my master greatly, and he is become great; and he has given him flocks and herds and silver and gold and menslaves and maidslaves and camels and asses.

O Senhor tem abençoado muito ao meu senhor, o qual se tem engrandecido; deu-lhe rebanhos e gado, prata e ouro, escravos e escravas, camelos e jumentos.

36 A nd Sarah, my master’s wife, bore a son to my master when she was old, unto whom he has given all that he has.

E Sara, a mulher do meu senhor, mesmo depois, de velha deu um filho a meu senhor; e o pai lhe deu todos os seus bens.

37 A nd my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;

Ora, o meu senhor me fez jurar, dizendo: Não tomarás mulher para meu filho das filhas dos cananeus, em cuja terra habito;

38 b ut thou shalt go unto my father’s house and to my kindred and take from there a wife for my son.

irás, porém, ã casa de meu pai, e ã minha parentela, e tomarás mulher para meu filho.

39 A nd I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me.

Então respondi ao meu senhor: Porventura não me seguirá a mulher.

40 A nd he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my lineage and of my father’s house;

Ao que ele me disse: O Senhor, em cuja presença tenho andado, enviará o seu anjo contigo, e prosperará o teu caminho; e da minha parentela e da casa de meu pai tomarás mulher para meu filho;

41 t hen shalt thou be free from this my oath, when thou hast come unto my lineage; and if they give her not unto thee, thou shalt be free from my oath.

então serás livre do meu juramento, quando chegares ã minha parentela; e se não ta derem, livre serás do meu juramento.

42 A nd I came this day unto the fountain and said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if now thou dost prosper my way by which I go,

E hoje cheguei ã fonte, e disse: Senhor, Deus de meu senhor Abraão, se é que agora prosperas o meu caminho, o qual venho seguindo,

43 b ehold, I stand by the fountain of water; let it come to pass, therefore, that the virgin who comes forth to draw water unto whom I say, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;

eis que estou junto ã fonte; faze, pois, que a donzela que sair para tirar água, a quem eu disser: Dá-me, peço-te, de beber um pouco de água do teu cântaro,

44 a nd if she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels, let the same be the woman whom the LORD has prepared for my master’s son.

e ela me responder: Bebe tu, e também tirarei água para os teus camelos; seja a mulher que o Senhor designou para o filho de meu senhor.

45 A nd before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder, and she went down unto the fountain and drew water, and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.

Ora, antes que eu acabasse de falar no meu coração, eis que Rebeca saía com o seu cântaro sobre o ombro, desceu ã fonte e tirou água; e eu lhe disse: Dá-me de beber, peço-te.

46 A nd she made haste and let down her pitcher from her shoulder and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also; so I drank, and she gave to drink unto the camels also.

E ela, com presteza, abaixou o seu cântaro do ombro, e disse: Bebe, e também darei de beber aos teus camelos; assim bebi, e ela deu também de beber aos camelos.

47 A nd I asked her and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore unto him. Then I put the pendant over her nose and the bracelets upon her hands.

Então lhe perguntei: De quem és filha? E ela disse: Filha de Betuel, filho de Naor, que Milca lhe deu. Então eu lhe pus o pendente no nariz e as pulseiras sobre as mãos;

48 A nd I bowed down my head and worshipped the LORD and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of the truth to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son.

e, inclinando-me, adorei e bendisse ao Senhor, Deus do meu senhor Abraão, que me havia conduzido pelo caminho direito para tomar para seu filho a filha do irmão do meu senhor.

49 A nd now if ye will deal in mercy and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.

Agora, pois, se vós haveis de usar de benevolência e de verdade para com o meu senhor, declarai-mo; e se não, também mo declarai, para que eu vá ou para a direita ou para a esquerda.

50 T hen Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceeds from the LORD; we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.

Então responderam Labão e Betuel: Do Senhor procede este negócio; nós não podemos falar-te mal ou bem.

51 B ehold, Rebekah is before thee; take her and go and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD has spoken.

Eis que Rebeca está diante de ti, toma-a e vai-te; seja ela a mulher do filho de teu senhor, como tem dito o Senhor.

52 A nd it came to pass that when Abraham’s slave heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.

Quando o servo de Abraão ouviu as palavras deles, prostrou-se em terra diante do Senhor:

53 A nd the slave brought forth vessels of silver and vessels of gold and raiment and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.

e tirou o servo jóias de prata, e jóias de ouro, e vestidos, e deu-os a Rebeca; também deu coisas preciosas a seu irmão e a sua mãe.

54 ¶ And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and slept; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.

Então comeram e beberam, ele e os homens que com ele estavam, e passaram a noite. Quando se levantaram de manhã, disse o servo: Deixai-me ir a meu senhor.

55 T hen her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.

Disseram o irmão e a mãe da donzela: Fique ela conosco alguns dias, pelo menos dez dias; e depois irá.

56 A nd he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD has prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.

Ele, porém, lhes respondeu: Não me detenhas, visto que o Senhor me tem prosperado o caminho; deixai-me partir, para que eu volte a meu senhor.

57 T hen they said, We will call the damsel and enquire at her mouth.

Disseram-lhe: chamaremos a donzela, e perguntaremos a ela mesma.

58 A nd they called Rebekah and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.

Chamaram, pois, a Rebeca, e lhe perguntaram: Irás tu com este homem; Respondeu ela: Irei.

59 S o they sent away Rebekah, their sister, and her nurse and Abraham’s slave and his men.

Então despediram a Rebeca, sua irmã, e ã sua ama e ao servo de Abraão e a seus homens;

60 A nd they blessed Rebekah and said unto her, Thou art our sister; be thou the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let thy seed possess the gate of those who hate them.

e abençoaram a Rebeca, e disseram-lhe: Irmã nossa, sê tu a mãe de milhares de miríades, e possua a tua descendência a porta de seus aborrecedores!

61 A nd Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels and followed the man; and the slave took Rebekah and went away.

Assim Rebeca se levantou com as suas moças e, montando nos camelos, seguiram o homem; e o servo, tomando a Rebeca, partiu.

62 ¶ And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the land of the Negev.

Ora, Isaque tinha vindo do caminho de Beer-Laai-Rói; pois habitava na terra do Negebe.

63 A nd Isaac had gone out to pray in the field at the evening hour; and he lifted up his eyes and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.

Saíra Isaque ao campo ã tarde, para meditar; e levantando os olhos, viu, e eis que vinham camelos.

64 A nd Rebekah also lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.

Rebeca também levantou os olhos e, vendo a Isaque, saltou do camelo

65 F or she had asked the slave, What man is this that walks in the field to meet us? And the slave had said, This is my master; therefore she took a veil and covered herself.

e perguntou ao servo: Quem é aquele homem que vem pelo campo ao nosso encontro? respondeu o servo: É meu senhor. Então ela tomou o véu e se cobriu.

66 T hen the slave told Isaac all the things that he had done.

Depois o servo contou a Isaque tudo o que fizera.

67 A nd Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent and took Rebekah as his wife; and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Isaque, pois, trouxe Rebeca para a tenda de Sara, sua mãe; tomou-a e ela lhe foi por mulher; e ele a amou. Assim Isaque foi consolado depois da morte de sua mãe.
