1 ¶ And Abraham was old and well stricken in age, and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.

Ya Abraham era viejo, bien avanzado en años; y Jehová había bendecido en todo a Abraham.

2 A nd Abraham said unto his eldest slave of his house, who ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh,

Dijo Abraham a un criado suyo, el más viejo de su casa, quien gobernaba todo lo que él tenía: —Pon ahora tu mano debajo de mi muslo

3 a nd I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of the heavens and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

y júrame por Jehová, Dios de los cielos y Dios de la tierra, que no tomarás para mi hijo mujer de las hijas de los cananeos, entre los cuales yo habito,

4 b ut thou shalt go unto my country and to my kindred and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

sino que irás a mi tierra y a mi parentela a tomar mujer para mi hijo Isaac.

5 A nd the slave said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land, must I therefore bring thy son again unto the land from which thou didst come?

El criado le respondió: —Quizá la mujer no quiera venir conmigo a esta tierra. ¿Debo, entonces, volver y llevar a tu hijo a la tierra de donde saliste?

6 A nd Abraham said unto him, Beware that thou not bring my son there again.

Abraham le dijo: —¡Cuidado con llevar allá a mi hijo!

7 T he LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred and who spoke unto me and swore unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from there.

Jehová, Dios de los cielos, que me tomó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mi parentela, y que me habló y me juró, diciendo: “A tu descendencia daré esta tierra”, él enviará su ángel delante de ti, para que tú traigas de allá mujer para mi hijo.

8 A nd if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be free from this my oath; only do not bring my son there again.

Pero si la mujer no quiere venir contigo, quedarás libre de mi juramento; solamente que no lleves allá a mi hijo.

9 T hen the slave put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning that matter.

Entonces el criado puso su mano debajo del muslo de Abraham, su señor, y le juró sobre este negocio.

10 ¶ And the slave took ten camels of the camels of his master and departed with the best of what his master had in his hand; and he arose and went to Ara-naharaim, unto the city of Nahor.

El criado tomó diez camellos de los de su señor, y se fue, no sin antes escoger toda clase de regalos de lo mejor que tenía su señor; se puso en camino y llegó a la ciudad de Nacor, en Mesopotamia.

11 A nd he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.

Fuera de la ciudad hizo arrodillar a los camellos junto a un pozo de agua, a la hora de la tarde, la hora en que salen las muchachas a buscar agua.

12 A nd he said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, to have a good encounter this day and show mercy unto my master Abraham.

Y dijo: «Jehová, Dios de mi señor Abraham, haz, te ruego, que hoy tenga yo un buen encuentro, y ten misericordia de mi señor Abraham.

13 B ehold, I stand here by the fountain of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out for water:

Aquí estoy junto a la fuente de agua, cuando salen a buscar agua las hijas de los hombres de esta ciudad.

14 A nd let it come to pass that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels to drink also; let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy slave Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shown mercy unto my master.

Sea, pues, que la muchacha a quien yo diga: “Baja tu cántaro, te ruego, para que yo beba”, y ella responda: “Bebe, y también daré de beber a tus camellos”, que sea ésta la que tú has destinado para tu siervo Isaac. En esto conoceré que has hecho misericordia con mi señor.»

15 A nd it came to pass before he had done speaking that, behold, Rebekah came out (who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother) with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

Aconteció que antes que él acabara de hablar, salió Rebeca con su cántaro sobre el hombro. Rebeca era hija de Betuel, hijo de Milca, mujer de Nacor, hermano de Abraham.

16 A nd the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, whom no man had known; and she went down to the fountain and filled her pitcher and was coming back up.

Esta muchacha era de aspecto muy hermoso y virgen, pues ningún hombre la había conocido; descendió a la fuente, llenó su cántaro, y se dispuso a regresar.

17 T hen the slave ran to meet her and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.

Entonces el criado corrió hacia ella y le dijo: —Te ruego que me des a beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro.

18 A nd she said, Drink, my lord, and she hastened to let down her pitcher upon her hand and gave him drink.

Ella respondió: —Bebe, señor mío. Se dio prisa a bajar su cántaro, lo sostuvo entre las manos y le dio a beber.

19 A nd when she had finished giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also until they have finished drinking.

Cuando acabó de darle de beber, dijo: —También para tus camellos sacaré agua, hasta que acaben de beber.

20 A nd she hastened and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water and drew for all his camels.

Se dio prisa y vació su cántaro en la pila; luego corrió otra vez al pozo a sacar agua y sacó para todos sus camellos.

21 A nd the man marveled at her in silence, to see whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not.

El hombre, maravillado, la contemplaba en silencio, pues quería saber si Jehová había prosperado su viaje, o no.

22 A nd it came to pass as the camels had finished drinking that the man took a golden pendant of half a shekel weight and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold

Cuando los camellos acabaron de beber, le dio el hombre un pendiente de oro que pesaba medio siclo y dos brazaletes que pesaban diez,

23 a nd said, Whose daughter art thou? Tell me, I pray thee; is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in?

y le preguntó: —¿De quién eres hija? Te ruego que me digas si en casa de tu padre hay lugar donde podamos pasar la noche.

24 A nd she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she gave birth unto Nahor.

Ella respondió: —Soy hija de Betuel, hijo de Milca, el hijo que ella dio a Nacor.

25 S he said moreover unto him, We have both straw and fodder enough and room to lodge in.

Y añadió: —También hay en nuestra casa paja y mucho forraje, y lugar donde pasar la noche.

26 T hen the man bowed down his head and worshipped the LORD.

El hombre entonces se inclinó y adoró a Jehová,

27 A nd he said, Blessed be the LORD, God of my master Abraham, who has not lifted his mercy and his truth from my master, the LORD leading me in the way to the house of my master’s brethren.

y dijo: «Bendito sea Jehová, Dios de mi amo Abraham, que no apartó de mi amo su misericordia y su verdad, y que me ha guiado en el camino a casa de los hermanos de mi amo.»

28 A nd the damsel ran and told those of her mother’s house these things.

La muchacha corrió e hizo saber estas cosas en casa de su madre.

29 ¶ And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban; and Laban ran out unto the man to the fountain.

Rebeca tenía un hermano que se llamaba Labán, el cual corrió afuera hacia el hombre, a la fuente.

30 A nd it came to pass when he saw the pendant and the bracelets upon his sister’s hands, she said, Thus spoke the man unto me; then he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the fountain.

Y cuando vio el pendiente y los brazaletes en las manos de su hermana, que decía: «Así me habló aquel hombre», fue adonde él estaba; lo encontró con los camellos, junto a la fuente,

31 A nd he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; why dost thou stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and the place for the camels.

y le dijo: —Ven, bendito de Jehová, ¿por qué estás fuera? He preparado la casa, y el lugar para los camellos.

32 T hen the man came into the house, and Laban ungirded his camels and gave straw and fodder for the camels and water to wash his feet and the men’s feet that were with him.

Entonces el hombre vino a la casa y Labán desató los camellos; les dio paja y forraje, y a él le dio agua para lavar sus pies, y los pies de los hombres que con él venían.

33 A nd they set food before him to eat, but he said, I will not eat until I have told my errand. And he said unto him, Speak on.

Luego le pusieron delante qué comer; pero él dijo: —No comeré hasta que haya dicho mi mensaje. —Habla —dijo Labán.

34 A nd he said, I am Abraham’s slave.

Y el hombre dijo: —Soy criado de Abraham.

35 A nd the LORD has blessed my master greatly, and he is become great; and he has given him flocks and herds and silver and gold and menslaves and maidslaves and camels and asses.

Jehová ha bendecido mucho a mi amo, y él se ha engrandecido; le ha dado ovejas y vacas, plata y oro, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos.

36 A nd Sarah, my master’s wife, bore a son to my master when she was old, unto whom he has given all that he has.

Sara, mujer de mi amo, dio a luz en su vejez un hijo a mi señor, quien le ha dado a él todo cuanto tiene.

37 A nd my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;

Mi amo me hizo jurar, diciendo: “No tomarás para mi hijo mujer de las hijas de los cananeos, en cuya tierra habito,

38 b ut thou shalt go unto my father’s house and to my kindred and take from there a wife for my son.

sino que irás a la casa de mi padre, a mi parentela, y tomarás mujer para mi hijo.”

39 A nd I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me.

Yo dije: “Quizá la mujer no quiera seguirme.”

40 A nd he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my lineage and of my father’s house;

Entonces él me respondió: “Jehová, en cuya presencia he andado, enviará contigo su ángel y prosperará tu camino; y tomarás para mi hijo mujer de mi familia y de la casa de mi padre.

41 t hen shalt thou be free from this my oath, when thou hast come unto my lineage; and if they give her not unto thee, thou shalt be free from my oath.

Entonces quedarás libre de mi juramento, cuando hayas llegado a mi familia: si no te la dan, quedarás libre de mi juramento.”

42 A nd I came this day unto the fountain and said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if now thou dost prosper my way by which I go,

»Llegué, pues, hoy a la fuente y dije: “Jehová, Dios de mi señor Abraham, si tú has de prosperar ahora el camino por el cual ando,

43 b ehold, I stand by the fountain of water; let it come to pass, therefore, that the virgin who comes forth to draw water unto whom I say, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;

permite que, mientras estoy junto a la fuente de agua, la muchacha que salga a buscar agua y a quien yo diga: ‘Dame de beber, te ruego, un poco de agua de tu cántaro’,

44 a nd if she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels, let the same be the woman whom the LORD has prepared for my master’s son.

y ella me responda: ‘Bebe tú, y también para tus camellos sacaré agua’, sea ésta la mujer que destinó Jehová para el hijo de mi señor.”

45 A nd before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder, and she went down unto the fountain and drew water, and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.

Antes que acabara de hablar en mi corazón, vi a Rebeca que salía con su cántaro sobre el hombro; descendió a la fuente, y sacó agua. Entonces le dije: “Te ruego que me des de beber.”

46 A nd she made haste and let down her pitcher from her shoulder and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also; so I drank, and she gave to drink unto the camels also.

Ella, al punto, bajó su cántaro del hombro y dijo: “Bebe, y también a tus camellos daré de beber.” Yo bebí, y dio también de beber a mis camellos.

47 A nd I asked her and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore unto him. Then I put the pendant over her nose and the bracelets upon her hands.

Entonces le pregunté: “¿De quién eres hija?” Ella respondió: “Soy hija de Betuel hijo de Nacor, el hijo que le dio Milca.” Le puse, pues, un pendiente en la nariz, y brazaletes en los brazos.

48 A nd I bowed down my head and worshipped the LORD and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of the truth to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son.

Luego me incliné, adoré a Jehová y bendije a Jehová, Dios de mi señor Abraham, que me había guiado por un camino recto para tomar la hija del hermano de mi señor para su hijo.

49 A nd now if ye will deal in mercy and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.

Ahora, pues, si estáis dispuestos a hacer misericordia y ser leales con mi señor, declarádmelo; y si no, declarádmelo también, y así sabré qué debo hacer.

50 T hen Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceeds from the LORD; we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.

Entonces Labán y Betuel respondieron diciendo: —De Jehová ha salido esto; no podemos hablarte ni mal ni bien.

51 B ehold, Rebekah is before thee; take her and go and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD has spoken.

Ahí está Rebeca, delante de ti: tómala y vete, y sea mujer del hijo de tu señor, como lo ha dicho Jehová.

52 A nd it came to pass that when Abraham’s slave heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.

Cuando el criado de Abraham oyó estas palabras, se inclinó a tierra ante Jehová.

53 A nd the slave brought forth vessels of silver and vessels of gold and raiment and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.

Después sacó el criado alhajas de plata, alhajas de oro y vestidos, y lo dio a Rebeca; también dio cosas preciosas a su hermano y a su madre.

54 ¶ And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and slept; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.

Luego comieron y bebieron, él y los hombres que venían con él, y pasaron allí la noche. Por la mañana, al levantarse, el criado dijo: —Enviadme a mi señor.

55 T hen her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.

Pero el hermano y la madre de Rebeca respondieron: —Espere la muchacha con nosotros al menos diez días, y después irá.

56 A nd he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD has prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.

Él les dijo: —No me detengáis, ya que Jehová ha prosperado mi camino; despachadme para que regrese donde está mi señor.

57 T hen they said, We will call the damsel and enquire at her mouth.

Ellos respondieron entonces: —Llamemos a la muchacha y preguntémosle.

58 A nd they called Rebekah and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.

Llamaron, pues, a Rebeca y le preguntaron: —¿Irás tú con este hombre? Ella respondió: —Sí, iré.

59 S o they sent away Rebekah, their sister, and her nurse and Abraham’s slave and his men.

Entonces dejaron ir a su hermana Rebeca, a su nodriza y también al criado de Abraham y a sus hombres.

60 A nd they blessed Rebekah and said unto her, Thou art our sister; be thou the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let thy seed possess the gate of those who hate them.

Y bendijeron a Rebeca, diciendo: «Hermana nuestra, sé madre de millares de millares, y conquisten tus descendientes la puerta de sus enemigos.»

61 A nd Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels and followed the man; and the slave took Rebekah and went away.

Rebeca y sus doncellas se levantaron, montaron en los camellos y siguieron al hombre. Así, pues, el criado tomó a Rebeca y se fue.

62 ¶ And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the land of the Negev.

Mientras tanto, Isaac había vuelto del pozo del «Viviente-que-me-ve», pues habitaba en el Neguev.

63 A nd Isaac had gone out to pray in the field at the evening hour; and he lifted up his eyes and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.

Había salido Isaac a meditar al campo, a la hora de la tarde, y alzando sus ojos vio los camellos que venían.

64 A nd Rebekah also lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.

Rebeca también alzó sus ojos, vio a Isaac y descendió del camello,

65 F or she had asked the slave, What man is this that walks in the field to meet us? And the slave had said, This is my master; therefore she took a veil and covered herself.

pues había preguntado al criado: —¿Quién es ese hombre que viene por el campo hacia nosotros? Y el criado había respondido: —Éste es mi señor. Tomó ella entonces el velo y se cubrió.

66 T hen the slave told Isaac all the things that he had done.

El criado le contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho.

67 A nd Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent and took Rebekah as his wife; and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Luego Isaac la trajo a la tienda de su madre Sara, y tomó a Rebeca por mujer y la amó. Así se consoló Isaac de la muerte de su madre.
