1 ¶ The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spoke unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,

Palabras de Agur hijo de Jaqué. La profecía que dijo el varón a Itiel, a Itiel y a Ucal.

2 S urely I am more carnal than any man and have not the understanding of a man.

Ciertamente yo soy más rudo que nadie: no tengo entendimiento humano.

3 I neither learned wisdom nor have the knowledge of the holy.

No aprendí sabiduría ni conozco la ciencia del Santo.

4 W ho has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in his fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

¿Quién subió al cielo y descendió? ¿Quién encerró los vientos en sus puños? ¿Quién recogió las aguas en un paño? ¿Quién afirmó todos los confines de la tierra? ¿Cuál es su nombre y, si lo sabes, el nombre de su hijo?

5 E very word of God is pure: he is a shield unto those that put their trust in him.

Toda palabra de Dios es limpia; él es escudo para los que en él esperan.

6 D o not add unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

No añadas a sus palabras, para que no te reprenda y seas hallado mentiroso.

7 ¶ Two things have I required of thee; do not deny me them before I die:

Dos cosas te he pedido, no me las niegues antes que muera:

8 R emove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread of my judgment:

Vanidad y mentira aparta de mí, y no me des pobreza ni riquezas, sino susténtame con el pan necesario,

9 L est I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and blaspheme the name of my God.

no sea que, una vez saciado, te niegue y diga: «¿Quién es Jehová?», o que, siendo pobre, robe y blasfeme contra el nombre de mi Dios.

10 ¶ Do not accuse a slave in the presence of his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.

No acuses al siervo ante su señor, no sea que te maldiga y lleves el castigo.

11 T here is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

Hay generación que maldice a su padre y que a su madre no bendice.

12 T here is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

Hay generación limpia en su propia opinión, si bien no se ha limpiado de su inmundicia.

13 T here is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

Hay generación de ojos altivos y párpados altaneros.

14 T here is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their molars as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the destitute from among men.

Hay generación cuyos dientes son espadas y cuyas muelas son cuchillos, para devorar de entre los hombres a los pobres de la tierra y a los menesterosos.

15 ¶ The horseleach has two daughters, which are called, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:

La sanguijuela tiene dos hijas que dicen: «¡Dame! ¡dame!» Tres cosas hay que nunca están hartas, y aun la cuarta nunca dice: «¡Basta!»:

16 S heol; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that never says, It is enough.

el seol, la matriz estéril, la tierra, que no se sacia de agua, y el fuego, que jamás dice: «¡Basta!»

17 T he eye that mocks at his father, and despises the teaching of his mother, the ravens shall pluck it out of the river, and the young eagles shall eat it.

El ojo que se burla de su padre y menosprecia la enseñanza de la madre, sáquenlo los cuervos de la cañada y devórenlo las crías del águila.

18 ¶ There are three things which are hidden from me, yea, four which I know not:

Tres cosas me son ocultas, y una cuarta tampoco conozco:

19 T he track of the eagle in the air; the track of the serpent upon the rock; the track of the ship in the midst of the sea; and the track of the man in the maid.

el rastro del águila en el aire, el rastro de la culebra sobre la peña, el rastro de la nave en medio del mar y el rastro del hombre en la muchacha.

20 S uch is the track of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness.

La mujer adúltera procede así: come, se limpia la boca y dice: «No he hecho ningún mal.»

21 F or three things the earth is disquieted, and the fourth it cannot bear:

Por tres cosas tiembla la tierra, y por una cuarta que no puede sufrir:

22 F or a slave when he reigns; and a fool when he is filled with bread;

por el siervo llegado a rey, por el necio saciado de pan,

23 f or a rejected woman when she is married; and a handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

por la mujer aborrecida, cuando se casa, y por la sierva cuando hereda a su señora.

24 ¶ There are four things which are little upon the earth, but they are wiser than the wise men:

Cuatro de las cosas más pequeñas de la tierra son más sabias que los sabios:

25 T he ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;

las hormigas, pueblo que no es fuerte, pero en verano preparan su comida;

26 t he conies are but a feeble folk, yet they make their houses in the rocks;

los conejos, pueblo que no es vigoroso, pero hacen su casa en la piedra;

27 t he locusts have no king, yet all of them go forth by bands;

las langostas, que no tienen rey, pero salen todas por cuadrillas;

28 t he spider takes hold with her hands and is in kings’ palaces.

la araña, que la atrapas con la mano, pero está en los palacios reales.

29 ¶ There are three things which have a magnificent walk; yea, the fourth is stately in going:

Tres cosas hay de hermoso andar, y una cuarta que pasea con elegancia:

30 T he lion which is strongest among beasts and does not turn away for any;

El león, fuerte entre todos los animales, que no retrocede ante nada;

31 t he greyhound who is girded up of loins; a he goat also, and the king, against whom no one rises up.

el gallo altivo, y también el macho cabrío, y el rey, a quien nadie resiste.

32 I f thou hast fallen, it is because thou hast lifted thyself up; and if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.

Si neciamente te has enaltecido y te has propuesto hacer mal, ponte la mano sobre la boca.

33 S urely the churning of milk brings forth butter and the wringing of the nose brings forth blood; so the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.

Ciertamente el que bate la leche saca mantequilla, el que con fuerza se suena la nariz saca sangre y el que provoca la ira causa contienda.
