1 ¶ Thou, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

Tú, pues, hijo mío, esfuérzate en la gracia que es en Cristo Jesús.

2 A nd the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Lo que has oído de mí ante muchos testigos, esto encarga a hombres fieles que sean idóneos para enseñar también a otros.

3 T hou, therefore, work hard as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

Tú, pues, sufre penalidades como buen soldado de Jesucristo.

4 N o man that wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who has chosen him to be a soldier.

Ninguno que milita se enreda en los negocios de la vida, a fin de agradar a aquel que lo tomó por soldado.

5 A nd also if anyone contends in public contest, he is not crowned, except he contends legitimately.

Y también el que lucha como atleta, no es coronado si no lucha legítimamente.

6 T he husbandman, in order to receive the fruits, must first work hard.

El labrador, para participar de los frutos, debe trabajar primero.

7 U nderstand what I say, that the Lord shall give thee understanding in all things.

Considera lo que digo, y el Señor te dé entendimiento en todo.

8 ¶ Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead, according to my gospel,

Acuérdate de Jesucristo, descendiente de David, resucitado de los muertos conforme a mi evangelio,

9 i n which I suffer trouble, like unto an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.

en el cual sufro penalidades, hasta prisiones a modo de malhechor; pero la palabra de Dios no está presa.

10 T herefore, I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they may also obtain the saving health which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Por tanto, todo lo soporto por amor de los escogidos, para que ellos también obtengan la salvación que es en Cristo Jesús con gloria eterna.

11 T his is a faithful word: That if we are dead with him, we shall also live with him;

Palabra fiel es ésta: Si somos muertos con él, también viviremos con él;

12 i f we suffer, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us;

si sufrimos, también reinaremos con él; si lo negamos, él también nos negará;

13 i f we are unfaithful, yet he remains faithful; he cannot deny himself.

si somos infieles, él permanece fiel, porque no puede negarse a sí mismo. Un obrero aprobado

14 ¶ Counsel these things, charging them before the Lord. Strive not in words that profit nothing, but rather subvert the hearers.

Recuérdales esto, exhortándolos delante del Señor a que no discutan sobre palabras, lo cual para nada aprovecha, sino que es para perdición de los oyentes.

15 S tudy to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that has nothing to be ashamed of, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Procura con diligencia presentarte a Dios aprobado, como obrero que no tiene de qué avergonzarse, que usa bien la palabra de verdad.

16 B ut avoid profane and vain wordiness, for it will develop into ungodliness.

Pero evita profanas y vanas palabrerías, porque conducirán más y más a la impiedad

17 A nd that word will eat away as gangrene, of whom are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

y su palabra carcomerá como gangrena. Así aconteció con Himeneo y Fileto,

18 w ho have erred from the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past and have overthrown the faith of some.

que se desviaron de la verdad diciendo que la resurrección ya se efectuó, y trastornan la fe de algunos.

19 ¶ Nevertheless, the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows those that are his. And, Let every one that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Pero el fundamento de Dios está firme, teniendo este sello: «Conoce el Señor a los que son suyos» y «Apártese de maldad todo aquel que invoca el nombre de Cristo.»

20 B ut in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of clay, and likewise some to honour, and some to dishonour.

En una casa grande, no solamente hay utensilios de oro y de plata, sino también de madera y de barro; unos son para usos honrosos, y otros para usos comunes.

21 I f a man, therefore, purges himself from these things, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and profitable for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Así que, si alguno se limpia de estas cosas, será instrumento para honra, santificado, útil al Señor y dispuesto para toda buena obra.

22 ¶ Flee also youthful lusts, but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with those that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Huye también de las pasiones juveniles y sigue la justicia, la fe, el amor y la paz, con los que de corazón limpio invocan al Señor.

23 B ut foolish and unwise questions refuse, knowing that they do beget contentions.

Pero desecha las cuestiones necias e insensatas, sabiendo que engendran contiendas,

24 T hat the slave of the Lord should not be contentious, but be meek unto everyone, apt to teach, patient,

porque el siervo del Señor no debe ser amigo de contiendas, sino amable para con todos, apto para enseñar, sufrido.

25 t hat with meekness they might teach those that resist, if God peradventure will grant unto them that they might repent and know the truth,

Debe corregir con mansedumbre a los que se oponen, por si quizá Dios les conceda que se arrepientan para conocer la verdad

26 a nd that they may become converted out of the snare of the devil, in which they are captive to do his will.

y escapen del lazo del diablo, en que están cautivos a voluntad de él.
