1 ¶ Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his law drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, it was turned to the contrary; for the Jews took dominion over those that hated them.

En el mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar, a los trece días del mismo mes, cuando debía ser ejecutado el mandamiento del rey y su decreto, el mismo día en que los enemigos de los judíos esperaban enseñorearse de ellos, sucedió lo contrario; porque los judíos se enseñorearon de los que los aborrecían.

2 T he Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt; and no one could withstand them, for the fear of them had fallen upon all the peoples.

Los judíos se reunieron en sus ciudades, en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, para descargar su mano sobre los que habían procurado su mal, sin que nadie les opusiera resistencia, porque el temor de ellos se había apoderado de todos los pueblos.

3 A nd all the princes of the provinces and the lieutenants and the captains and officers of the king helped the Jews because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.

Y todos los príncipes de las provincias, los sátrapas, capitanes y oficiales del rey, apoyaban a los judíos, pues todos temían a Mardoqueo,

4 F or Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces, for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

ya que Mardoqueo era grande en la casa del rey y su fama se había extendido por todas las provincias. Así, día a día se engrandecía Mardoqueo.

5 T hus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword and slaughter and destruction and did what they would unto those that hated them.

Asolaron los judíos a todos sus enemigos a filo de espada, con mortandad y destrucción, e hicieron con sus enemigos como quisieron.

6 A nd in Shushan, the palace, the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.

En Susa, capital del reino, mataron y exterminaron los judíos a quinientos hombres.

7 T hen they also slew Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,

Mataron entonces a Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata,

8 P oratha, Adalia, Aridatha,

Porata, Adalía, Aridata,

9 P armashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vajezatha,

Parmasta, Arisai, Aridai y Vaizata,

10 t he ten sons of Haman, the son of Hammedatha; the enemy of the Jews, they slew, but on the spoil they did not lay their hand.

los diez hijos de Amán hijo de Hamedata, enemigo de los judíos; pero no tocaron sus bienes.

11 O n the same day the number of those that were slain in Shushan, the palace, was brought before the king.

El mismo día se le dio cuenta al rey acerca del número de los muertos en Susa, residencia real.

12 A nd the king said unto Esther, the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan, the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? Now what is thy petition, and it shall be granted thee? What is thy request further, and it shall be done?

Y dijo el rey a la reina Ester: —En Susa, capital del reino, los judíos han matado a quinientos hombres y a diez hijos de Amán. ¿Qué habrán hecho en las otras provincias del rey? ¿Cuál, pues, es tu petición, y te será concedida? ¿qué otra cosa deseas y te será hecha?

13 T hen said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.

Ester respondió: —Si place al rey, concédase también mañana a los judíos en Susa que hagan conforme a la ley de hoy; en cuanto a los diez hijos de Amán, que los cuelguen en la horca.

14 A nd the king commanded it to be so done; and it was given as law at Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

Mandó el rey que se hiciera así. Se dio la orden en Susa, y colgaron a los diez hijos de Amán.

15 A nd the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together also on the fourteenth day of the month Adar and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the spoil they did not lay their hand.

Los judíos que estaban en Susa se reunieron también el catorce del mes de Adar y mataron allí a trescientos hombres; pero no tocaron sus bienes. La fiesta de Purim

16 A nd the other Jews that were in the king’s provinces also gathered themselves together and stood for their lives and had rest from their enemies and slew of their foes seventy-five thousand, but they did not lay their hands on the spoil,

En cuanto a los otros judíos que estaban en las provincias del rey, también se reunieron para la defensa de sus vidas, contra sus enemigos; mataron a setenta y cinco mil de sus contrarios; pero no tocaron sus bienes.

17 o n the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same they rested and made it a day of banquet and gladness.

Ocurrió esto el día trece del mes de Adar, y reposaron el día catorce del mismo mes, convirtiéndolo en día de banquete y de alegría.

18 B ut the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested and made it a day of banquet and gladness.

Pero los judíos que estaban en Susa se reunieron el día trece y el catorce del mismo mes, y el quince reposaron, convirtiéndolo en día de banquete y de regocijo.

19 T herefore, the Jews of the villages that dwelt in the unwalled towns made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and banquet and a good day and of sending portions one to another.

Por tanto, los judíos aldeanos que habitan en las villas sin muro celebran el catorce del mes de Adar como día de alegría y de banquete, un día de regocijo, y unos a otros se hacen regalos.

20 ¶ And Mordecai wrote these things and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far,

Escribió Mardoqueo estas cosas, y envió cartas a todos los judíos que estaban en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, cercanos y distantes,

21 t o establish this among them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,

ordenándoles que celebraran el día decimocuarto del mes de Adar, y el decimoquinto del mismo mes, de cada año,

22 a s the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy and from mourning into a good day, that they should make them days of banquet and joy and of sending portions one to another and gifts to the poor.

como días en que los judíos estuvieron en paz con sus enemigos, y como el mes en que la tristeza se trocó en alegría, y el luto en festividad; que los convirtieran en días de banquete y de gozo, en día de enviar regalos cada uno a su vecino, y dádivas a los pobres.

23 A nd the Jews accepting this began to do as Mordecai had written unto them.

Y los judíos aceptaron esta costumbre, que ya habían comenzado a observar, según les escribió Mardoqueo.

24 B ecause Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them and to destroy them,

Porque Amán hijo de Hamedata, el agagueo, enemigo de todos los judíos, había ideado un plan para exterminarlos, y había echado Pur, que quiere decir suerte, para arruinarlos y acabar con ellos.

25 b ut when she came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

Pero cuando Ester se presentó ante el rey, éste ordenó por carta que el perverso designio que aquél trazó contra los judíos recayera sobre su cabeza, y que los colgaran a él y a sus hijos en la horca.

26 T herefore, they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore, for all the words of this letter and of that which they had seen concerning this matter and which had come unto them,

Por eso llamaron a estos días Purim, por el nombre Pur. Asimismo, debido a lo relatado en esta carta, y por lo que ellos mismos vieron y lo que les llegó a su conocimiento,

27 t he Jews ordained and took upon them and upon their seed and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing and according to their appointed time each year,

los judíos establecieron y prometieron que ellos, sus descendientes y todos sus allegados, no dejarían de celebrar estos dos días, según este escrito y esta fecha, de año en año;

28 a nd that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city, and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.

que estos días serían recordados y celebrados por todas las generaciones, familias, provincias y ciudades; que estos días de Purim no dejarían de ser guardados por los judíos, y que su descendencia jamás dejaría de recordarlos.

29 T hen Esther, the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai, the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.

Y la reina Ester hija de Abihail, y Mardoqueo, el judío, suscribieron con plena autoridad esta segunda carta referente a Purim.

30 A nd he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,

Y fueron enviadas cartas a todos los judíos, a las ciento veintisiete provincias del rey Asuero, con palabras de paz y de verdad,

31 t o confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai, the Jew, and Esther, the queen, had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the words of the fastings and their cry.

para confirmar estos días de Purim en la fecha señalada, según les había ordenado Mardoqueo, el judío, y la reina Ester, y según ellos lo habían establecido para sí mismos y para su descendencia, para conmemorar el fin de los ayunos y de su lamento.

32 A nd the commandment of Esther confirmed these words of Purim, and it was written in the book.

El mandamiento de Ester confirmó estas celebraciones acerca de Purim, y ello fue registrado en un libro.
