1 ¶ The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spoke unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,

Palabras proféticas de Agur, hijo de Jaqué, dirigidas a Itiel, a Itiel y a Ucal.

2 S urely I am more carnal than any man and have not the understanding of a man.

¡No hay nadie más ignorante que yo! ¡No hay en mí raciocinio humano!

3 I neither learned wisdom nor have the knowledge of the holy.

No tengo estudios ni sabiduría; ¡no tengo conocimiento alguno del Dios santo!

4 W ho has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in his fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

¿Quién puede subir al cielo, y bajar de allí? ¿Quién puede retener al viento entre sus puños? ¿Quién puede retener el mar en un paño? ¿Quién estableció los límites de la tierra? ¿Sabes su nombre, y el nombre de su hijo?

5 E very word of God is pure: he is a shield unto those that put their trust in him.

Las palabras de Dios son todas puras; Dios es el escudo de quienes en él confían.

6 D o not add unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

No añadas a sus palabras, y él no te reprenderá, y tampoco resultarás un mentiroso.

7 ¶ Two things have I required of thee; do not deny me them before I die:

Solamente dos cosas te he pedido; ¡concédemelas antes de que muera!

8 R emove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread of my judgment:

Aparta de mí la vanidad y la mentira, y no me des pobreza ni riquezas. Dame sólo el pan necesario,

9 L est I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and blaspheme the name of my God.

no sea que, una vez satisfecho, te niegue y diga: «¿Y quién es el Señor?» O que, por ser pobre, llegue yo a robar y ofenda el nombre de mi Dios.

10 ¶ Do not accuse a slave in the presence of his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.

No acuses al siervo ante su amo, no sea que te maldiga y sufras el castigo.

11 T here is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

Hay algunos que maldicen a su padre y no bendicen a su madre.

12 T here is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

Hay algunos que se creen muy puros, aunque no se han purificado de su inmundicia.

13 T here is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

Hay algunos que miran con altanería y mantienen en alto la mirada.

14 T here is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their molars as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the destitute from among men.

Hay algunos cuyos dientes parecen espadas y cuyas muelas parecen cuchillos, ¡dispuestos a devorar a los pobres de la tierra, a la gente menesterosa de este mundo!

15 ¶ The horseleach has two daughters, which are called, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:

La sanguijuela tiene dos hijas que no saben más que pedir. Tres cosas hay que nunca se sacian, y aun la cuarta nunca está satisfecha:

16 S heol; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that never says, It is enough.

El sepulcro, la matriz estéril, la tierra seca, que demanda más agua, y el fuego, que jamás deja de arder.

17 T he eye that mocks at his father, and despises the teaching of his mother, the ravens shall pluck it out of the river, and the young eagles shall eat it.

A quien mira con desprecio a su padre y tiene en poco la enseñanza de la madre, ¡que los cuervos del valle le saquen los ojos!, ¡que los aguiluchos se lo coman vivo!

18 ¶ There are three things which are hidden from me, yea, four which I know not:

Hay tres cosas que me son incomprensibles, y aun la cuarta no la alcanzo a comprender:

19 T he track of the eagle in the air; the track of the serpent upon the rock; the track of the ship in the midst of the sea; and the track of the man in the maid.

el rastro del águila en el aire, el rastro de la serpiente sobre las rocas, el rastro del barco al surcar el mar, y el rastro del hombre en la doncella.

20 S uch is the track of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness.

La mujer adúltera se porta así: Come, se limpia la boca, y afirma: «No he hecho nada malo.»

21 F or three things the earth is disquieted, and the fourth it cannot bear:

Hay tres cosas que sacuden a la tierra, y una cuarta que no puede tolerar:

22 F or a slave when he reigns; and a fool when he is filled with bread;

el siervo que llega a ser rey, el necio que se harta de pan,

23 f or a rejected woman when she is married; and a handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

la solterona que llega a casarse, y la criada que suplanta a su ama.

24 ¶ There are four things which are little upon the earth, but they are wiser than the wise men:

Hay cuatro cosas muy pequeñas en la tierra, pero que son más sabias que los sabios:

25 T he ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;

Las hormigas, ejército nada fuerte, pero que en el verano almacena su comida;

26 t he conies are but a feeble folk, yet they make their houses in the rocks;

los damanes, ejército sin recursos, pero que ponen su casa en la roca;

27 t he locusts have no king, yet all of them go forth by bands;

las langostas, que no tienen rey, pero que avanzan en perfecta formación;

28 t he spider takes hold with her hands and is in kings’ palaces.

y la araña, que se puede atrapar con la mano, pero que se halla en el palacio del rey.

29 ¶ There are three things which have a magnificent walk; yea, the fourth is stately in going:

Tres animales caminan con paso airoso, y el cuarto se pavonea al andar:

30 T he lion which is strongest among beasts and does not turn away for any;

El león, el más fuerte de los animales, al que nada lo hace retroceder;

31 t he greyhound who is girded up of loins; a he goat also, and the king, against whom no one rises up.

el pavo real, el macho cabrío, Y el rey, a quien nadie resiste.

32 I f thou hast fallen, it is because thou hast lifted thyself up; and if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.

Si en tu necedad has querido enaltecerte, o has hecho planes malvados, reflexiona:

33 S urely the churning of milk brings forth butter and the wringing of the nose brings forth blood; so the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.

Si bates la leche, obtienes mantequilla; si te suenas fuerte la nariz, ésta te sangra; y si provocas la ira de alguien, provocas un pleito.
