1 ¶ And a man of Belial happened to be there, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a man of Jemini, and he blew the shofar, saying, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, O Israel.

Allí se encontraba un malvado benjaminita, llamado Sebá hijo de Bicri, el cual tocó la trompeta y dijo: «Nosotros no tenemos nada que ver con David hijo de Yesé, ni participaremos de sus propiedades. Israelitas, ¡volvamos a nuestras casas!»

2 S o all the men of Israel went up from after David and followed Sheba, the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah cleaved unto their king from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

Entonces todos los israelitas abandonaron a David y siguieron a Sebá hijo de Bicri, pero los de Judá acompañaron al rey desde el Jordán hasta Jerusalén.

3 A nd when David came to his house at Jerusalem, the king took the ten women, his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward and fed them, but did not go in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in widowhood.

Al llegar a su palacio en Jerusalén, David apartó a las diez concubinas que había dejado para cuidar la casa y las puso en reclusión. No dejó de alimentarlas, pero nunca más tuvo relaciones con ellas, sino que se quedaron encerradas de por vida, como si fueran viudas.

4 ¶ Then the king said to Amasa, Assemble me the men of Judah for the third day, and be thou here present.

Después de esto, el rey le ordenó a Amasa: «Convoca a los jefes de Judá para dentro de tres días. Y quiero que tú estés presente.»

5 S o Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah, but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

Amasa salió para convocar a los jefes de Judá, pero se tardó más del tiempo señalado.

6 A nd David said to Abishai, Now Sheba, the son of Bichri, shall do us more harm than Absalom; take thou thy lord’s slaves and pursue after him lest he find fenced cities and escape us.

Entonces David le dijo a Abisay: «Ahora Sebá hijo de Bicri puede resultarnos más perjudicial que Absalón. Es mejor que busques a algunos hombres de mi guardia personal y vayas tras él, no sea que busque refugio en alguna ciudad fortificada y nos cause dificultades.»

7 T hen Joab’s men went out after him, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem to pursue after Sheba, the son of Bichri.

Entonces los soldados de Joab salieron de Jerusalén en persecusión de Sebá hijo de Bicri. Lo acompañaron los cretenses, los peleteos y los mejores soldados del rey.

8 W hen they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came out and met them. And Joab’s garment that he had put on was girded unto him and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in its sheath, and as he went forth, it fell out.

Cuando llegaron cerca de la gran piedra que está en Gabaón, Amasa les salió al encuentro. Joab llevaba puesta su ropa de batalla, con una daga ceñida al cinto, la cual se le cayó al suelo mientras iba a encontrarse con Amasa.

9 A nd Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in peace, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him.

Y Joab le preguntó: «¡Hola, hermano mío! ¿Todo está en orden?» Acto seguido, Joab tomó a Amasa por la barba, como para besarlo.

10 B ut Amasa took no heed of the sword that was in Joab’s hand; and he smote him with it in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground and struck him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai, his brother, pursued after Sheba, the son of Bichri.

Pero Amasa no se dio cuenta de la daga que Joab tenía en la mano, y Joab se la hundió en la quinta costilla, y sus entrañas quedaron regadas por el suelo. La herida fue mortal, y Joab no tuvo que rematarlo. Después de eso, Joab y su hermano Abisay siguieron persiguiendo a Sebá.

11 A nd one of Joab’s servants stood by him, and said, He that favours Joab and he that is for David, let him go after Joab.

Uno de los soldados de Joab se puso a su lado y dijo: «Todos los que estén de parte de David y Joab, sigan a Joab.»

12 A nd Amasa had wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field and cast a garment upon him because he saw that every one that came by him stopped.

Mientras tanto, Amasa se revolcaba en su sangre a la mitad del camino, y los que pasaban se detenían para verlo, hasta que un hombre arrastró el cuerpo fuera del camino y lo cubrió con un manto.

13 W hen he was removed out of the highway, all the people that followed Joab passed on, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

Entonces los seguidores de Joab pudieron avanzar y se fueron en persecusión de Sebá hijo de Bicri.

14 ¶ And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel and to Bethmaachah and all the Berites; and they were gathered together and also went after him.

Sebá pasó por todas las tribus de Israel, hasta llegar a Abel Betmacá, y los habitantes de Barim se le unieron.

15 A nd they came and besieged him in Abel of Bethmaachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and the people went against the wall; and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.

Cuando la gente de Joab llegó a la ciudad, sitiaron a Sebá en Abel Betmacá; levantaron un baluarte para atacar la ciudad, y procuraban derribar las murallas.

16 T hen a wise woman cried out in the city, Hear, hear, I pray you, tell Joab to come here, that I may speak with him.

Entonces una mujer muy astuta gritó desde la ciudad: «¡Por favor, escúchenme! ¡Por favor, díganle a Joab que venga! ¡Necesito hablar con él!»

17 A nd when he had come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thy handmaid. And he answered, I hear.

Cuando Joab se acercó, la mujer le preguntó si en efecto era Joab. Éste le respondió que sí, y ella le dijo: «¡Por favor, escucha lo que te voy a decir!» Y él respondió: «Te escucho.»

18 T hen she spoke, saying, They used to speak in old times, saying, If you have a question ask it at Abel; and so they concluded the matter.

Entonces ella añadió: «Nuestros antepasados solían decir: “Quien quiera preguntar algo, que pregunte a los de Abel”, y así resolvían cualquier asunto.

19 I am one of those that are peaceable and faithful in Israel, and thou seekest to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel; why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the LORD?

Yo soy una mujer de paz, y fiel a Israel; tú, en cambio, quieres destruir esta ciudad, que es como una madre en Israel. ¿Por qué quieres destruir lo que el Señor mismo nos ha dado?»

20 A nd Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy.

Y Joab le respondió: «Lejos esté de mí destruir y deshacer tu ciudad.

21 T he matter is not so, but a man of Mount Ephraim, Sheba, the son of Bichri, by name, has lifted up his hand against King David; give only him over, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

Pero hay un problema. Aquí está Sebá hijo de Bicri, que vino de los montes de Efraín. Este malvado se ha sublevado contra el rey David. Si me lo entregan, ordenaré levantar el sitio y nos iremos de la ciudad.» Y la mujer le respondió: «Te aseguro que arrojaremos su cabeza desde la muralla.»

22 T hen the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba, the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew the shofar, and they retired from the city, each one to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

Entonces la mujer fue a hablar con todo el pueblo y astutamente los convenció para que le cortaran la cabeza a Sebá hijo de Bicri y se la entregaran a Joab. Ellos así lo hicieron, y desde la muralla le arrojaron a Joab la cabeza de Sebá. Entonces Joab dio el toque de retirada, y todos se fueron a su tienda de campaña, mientras que Joab se fue a Jerusalén para informar al rey. Oficiales de David

23 ¶ So Joab remained over all the host of Israel, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites;

Fue así como Joab afirmó su mando sobre todo el ejército de Israel, mientras que Benaías hijo de Joyadá quedó al frente de los cretenses y los peleteos.

24 a nd Adoram was over the tribute, and Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was writer of the chronicles,

Adorán quedó a cargo de los tributos, Josafat hijo de Ajilud quedó como cronista,

25 a nd Sheva was scribe, and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests;

Sevá quedó como escriba, y Sadoc y Abiatar como sacerdotes.

26 a nd Ira, the Jairite, was David’s priest.

También Ira el jaireo era sacerdote de David.
