1 ¶ And a man of Belial happened to be there, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a man of Jemini, and he blew the shofar, saying, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, O Israel.

C’era là un uomo scellerato di nome Seba, figlio di Bicri, un Beniaminita, il quale suonò la tromba e disse: «Noi non abbiamo nulla da spartire con Davide, non abbiamo nulla in comune con il figlio d’Isai! O Israele, ciascuno alla sua tenda!»

2 S o all the men of Israel went up from after David and followed Sheba, the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah cleaved unto their king from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

E tutti gli uomini d’Israele ripresero la via delle alture, separandosi da Davide per seguire Seba, figlio di Bicri; ma quelli di Giuda non si staccarono dal loro re e l’accompagnarono dal Giordano fino a Gerusalemme.

3 A nd when David came to his house at Jerusalem, the king took the ten women, his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward and fed them, but did not go in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in widowhood.

Quando Davide fu giunto a casa sua a Gerusalemme, prese le dieci concubine che aveva lasciate a custodia del palazzo e le fece rinchiudere. Egli somministrava loro gli alimenti, ma non si accostava a loro; e rimasero così rinchiuse, vivendo come vedove, fino al giorno della loro morte.

4 ¶ Then the king said to Amasa, Assemble me the men of Judah for the third day, and be thou here present.

Poi il re disse ad Amasa: «Radunami tutti gli uomini di Giuda entro tre giorni; e anche tu trovati qui».

5 S o Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah, but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

Amasa dunque partì per radunare gli uomini di Giuda; ma tardò oltre il tempo fissatogli dal re.

6 A nd David said to Abishai, Now Sheba, the son of Bichri, shall do us more harm than Absalom; take thou thy lord’s slaves and pursue after him lest he find fenced cities and escape us.

Allora Davide disse ad Abisai: «Seba, figlio di Bicri, ci farà adesso più male di Absalom; prendi tu la gente del tuo signore e inseguilo perché non trovi delle città fortificate e ci sfugga».

7 T hen Joab’s men went out after him, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem to pursue after Sheba, the son of Bichri.

Abisai partì, seguito dalla gente di Ioab, dai Cheretei, dai Peletei e da tutti gli uomini più valorosi; uscirono da Gerusalemme per inseguire Seba, figlio di Bicri.

8 W hen they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came out and met them. And Joab’s garment that he had put on was girded unto him and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in its sheath, and as he went forth, it fell out.

Si trovavano vicino alla grande pietra che è a Gabaon, quando Amasa venne loro incontro. Ioab indossava la sua veste militare sulla quale cingeva una spada che, attaccata al cinturino, gli pendeva dai fianchi nel suo fodero; mentre Ioab si faceva avanti, la spada gli cadde.

9 A nd Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in peace, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him.

Ioab disse ad Amasa: «Come stai, fratello mio?» Con la destra prese Amasa per la barba per baciarlo.

10 B ut Amasa took no heed of the sword that was in Joab’s hand; and he smote him with it in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground and struck him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai, his brother, pursued after Sheba, the son of Bichri.

Amasa non fece attenzione alla spada che Ioab aveva in mano; e Ioab lo colpì al ventre e gli intestini si sparsero per terra. Non lo colpì una seconda volta, perché Amasa morì. Poi Ioab e Abisai, suo fratello, si misero a inseguire Seba, figlio di Bicri.

11 A nd one of Joab’s servants stood by him, and said, He that favours Joab and he that is for David, let him go after Joab.

Uno dei giovani di Ioab era rimasto vicino ad Amasa e diceva: «Chi vuol bene a Ioab e chi è per Davide, segua Ioab!»

12 A nd Amasa had wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field and cast a garment upon him because he saw that every one that came by him stopped.

Intanto Amasa era immerso nel sangue in mezzo alla strada. Quell’uomo, vedendo che tutto il popolo si fermava, trascinò Amasa fuori dalla strada in un campo e gli buttò addosso un mantello; perché aveva visto che tutti quelli che gli arrivavano vicino si fermavano;

13 W hen he was removed out of the highway, all the people that followed Joab passed on, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

ma quando egli fu tolto dalla strada, tutti passavano al seguito di Ioab per dare addosso a Seba, figlio di Bicri.

14 ¶ And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel and to Bethmaachah and all the Berites; and they were gathered together and also went after him.

Ioab attraversò tutte le tribù d’Israele fino ad Abel-Bet-Maaca. Tutto il fior fiore degli uomini si radunò e lo seguì.

15 A nd they came and besieged him in Abel of Bethmaachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and the people went against the wall; and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.

Giunsero ad Abel-Bet-Maaca e vi assediarono Seba, innalzando contro la città un terrapieno che dominava le fortificazioni; tutta la gente che era con Ioab scavava le mura per farle crollare.

16 T hen a wise woman cried out in the city, Hear, hear, I pray you, tell Joab to come here, that I may speak with him.

Allora una donna di buon senso gridò dalla città: «Udite, udite! Vi prego, dite a Ioab di avvicinarsi perché gli voglio parlare!»

17 A nd when he had come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thy handmaid. And he answered, I hear.

Quando egli si fu avvicinato, la donna gli chiese: «Sei tu Ioab?» Egli rispose: «Sono io». Allora lei gli disse: «Ascolta la parola della tua serva». Egli rispose: «Ascolto».

18 T hen she spoke, saying, They used to speak in old times, saying, If you have a question ask it at Abel; and so they concluded the matter.

Lei riprese: «Una volta si diceva: “Si domandi consiglio ad Abel!” E così si giungeva a una conclusione!

19 I am one of those that are peaceable and faithful in Israel, and thou seekest to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel; why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the LORD?

Abel è una delle città più pacifiche e più fedeli in Israele; e tu cerchi di far perire una città che è una madre in Israele. Perché vuoi distruggere l’eredità del Signore ?»

20 A nd Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy.

Ioab rispose: «Lungi, lungi da me l’idea di distruggere e di guastare.

21 T he matter is not so, but a man of Mount Ephraim, Sheba, the son of Bichri, by name, has lifted up his hand against King David; give only him over, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

Il fatto non sta così; un uomo della regione montuosa di Efraim, di nome Seba, figlio di Bicri, ha alzato la mano contro il re, contro Davide. Consegnatemi lui solo e io mi allontanerò dalla città». La donna disse a Ioab: «La sua testa ti sarà gettata dalle mura».

22 T hen the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba, the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew the shofar, and they retired from the city, each one to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

Allora la donna si rivolse a tutto il popolo con il suo saggio consiglio e quelli tagliarono la testa a Seba, figlio di Bicri, e la gettarono a Ioab. Questi fece suonare la tromba; tutti si allontanarono dalla città e ognuno tornò alla sua tenda. E Ioab tornò a Gerusalemme dal re.

23 ¶ So Joab remained over all the host of Israel, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites;

Ioab era il capo di tutto l’esercito d’Israele; Benaia, figlio di Ieoiada, era il capo dei Cheretei e dei Peletei.

24 a nd Adoram was over the tribute, and Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was writer of the chronicles,

Adoram era addetto ai lavori forzati; Iosafat, figlio di Ailud, era archivista;

25 a nd Sheva was scribe, and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests;

Seia era segretario; Sadoc e Abiatar erano sacerdoti;

26 a nd Ira, the Jairite, was David’s priest.

anche Ira di Iair era ministro di stato di Davide.
