1 ¶ Surely there is a mine for the silver, and a place for gold where they refine it.

2 I ron is taken out of the dust, and bronze is melted out of the stone.

Il ferro si cava dal suolo, e la pietra fusa dà il rame.

3 H e set a border unto the darkness, and unto every perfect work that he made, he placed a stone of darkness and shadow of death.

L’uomo ha posto fine alle tenebre, egli esplora i più profondi recessi per trovare le pietre che sono nel buio, nell’ombra di morte.

4 T he river breaks forth next to the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot, that were higher than man, are gone away.

Scava un pozzo lontano dall’abitato; il piede più non serve a quelli che vi lavorano; sono sospesi, oscillano lontano dai mortali.

5 L and out of which bread comes forth, and underneath it shall be as if it were converted in fire.

Dalla terra esce il pane, ma, nelle sue viscere, è sconvolta come dal fuoco.

6 A place where its stones shall be sapphires; and it shall have dust of gold.

Le sue rocce sono la sede dello zaffiro e vi si trova la polvere d’oro.

7 A path which no fowl knows and which the vulture’s eye has never seen;

L’uccello rapace non conosce il sentiero che vi conduce, né l’ha mai scorto l’occhio del falco.

8 t he young of the proud have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed by it.

Le fiere superbe non vi hanno messo piede, il leone non c’è mai passato.

9 H e put his hand upon the flint and overturned the mountains from the root.

L’uomo stende la mano sul granito, rovescia dalle radici le montagne.

10 H e cut rivers out of the rocks; and his eye saw every precious thing.

Pratica trafori dentro le rocce e l’occhio suo scorge quanto c’è di prezioso.

11 H e detained the rivers in their source and caused that which was hid to be brought to light.

Frena le acque perché non gemano e le cose nascoste trae fuori alla luce.

12 B ut where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

Ma la saggezza, dove trovarla? Dov’è il luogo dell’intelligenza?

13 M an never knew its price; neither is it found in the land of the living.

L’uomo non ne sa la via, non la si trova sulla terra dei viventi.

14 ¶ The deep saith, It is not in me; and the sea saith, It is not with me.

L’abisso dice: “Non è in me”; il mare dice: “Non sta da me”.

15 I t cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for its price.

Non la si ottiene in cambio d’oro, né la si compra a peso d’argento.

16 I t cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx or the sapphire.

Non la si acquista con l’oro di Ofir, con l’ònice prezioso e con lo zaffiro.

17 G old cannot equal it, nor can diamond; neither shall it be exchanged for vessels of fine gold.

L’oro e il vetro non reggono al suo confronto, non la si dà in cambio di vasi d’oro fino.

18 N o mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls; for wisdom is better than precious stones.

Non si parli di corallo, di cristallo; la saggezza vale più delle perle.

19 T he emerald of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

Il topazio d’Etiopia non può starle a confronto, l’oro puro non ne controbilancia il valore.

20 ¶ Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?

Da dove viene dunque la saggezza? Dov’è il luogo dell’intelligenza?

21 S eeing it is hid from the eyes of all living and kept concealed from every fowl of the heaven.

Essa è nascosta agli occhi di ogni vivente, è celata agli uccelli del cielo.

22 H ell and death say, We have heard its fame with our ears.

L’abisso e la morte dicono: “Ne abbiamo avuto qualche sentore”.

23 G od understands its way, and he alone knows its place.

Dio solo conosce la via che vi conduce, egli solo sa il luogo dove risiede,

24 F or he looks unto the ends of the earth and sees under the whole heaven,

perché il suo sguardo giunge fino alle estremità della terra, perch’egli vede tutto quello che è sotto i cieli.

25 T o make a weight for the wind and to supply water by measure,

Quando regolò il peso del vento e fissò la misura delle acque,

26 w hen he made a law for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunders.

quando diede una legge alla pioggia e tracciò la strada al lampo dei tuoni,

27 T hen he saw it and counted it; he prepared it and also searched it out.

allora la vide e la rivelò, la stabilì e anche l’investigò.

28 A nd unto man he said, Behold, that the fear of the Lord, is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

E disse all’uomo: “Ecco, temere il Signore, questa è saggezza, fuggire il male è intelligenza!”».
