1 ¶ And straightway in the morning the princes of the priests having held a consultation with the elders and with the scribes and with the whole council, took Jesus away bound and delivered him to Pilate.

La mattina presto i capi dei sacerdoti, con gli anziani, gli scribi e tutto il sinedrio, tenuto consiglio, legarono Gesù, lo portarono via e lo consegnarono a Pilato.

2 A nd Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he, answering, said unto him, Thou sayest it.

Pilato gli domandò: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?» Gesù gli rispose: «Tu lo dici».

3 A nd the princes of the priests accused him of many things.

I capi dei sacerdoti lo accusavano di molte cose;

4 A nd Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they accuse thee of.

e Pilato di nuovo lo interrogò dicendo: «Non rispondi nulla? Vedi di quante cose ti accusano! »

5 B ut Jesus yet answered nothing, so that Pilate marvelled.

Ma Gesù non rispose più nulla; e Pilato se ne meravigliava.

6 N ow at that feast it was customary that he release unto them one prisoner, whoever they desired.

Ad ogni festa egli era solito liberare loro un carcerato, quello che essi domandavano.

7 A nd there was one named Barabbas, who lay bound with those that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.

Vi era allora in prigione un tale, chiamato Barabba, insieme ad alcuni ribelli i quali avevano commesso un omicidio durante una rivolta.

8 A nd the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had always done unto them.

E la folla, salita, cominciò a chiedere che facesse per loro come era solito fare.

9 A nd Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

E Pilato rispose loro: «Volete che io vi liberi il re dei Giudei?»

10 F or he knew that the princes of the priests had delivered him for envy.

Perché sapeva che i capi dei sacerdoti glielo avevano consegnato per invidia.

11 B ut the princes of the priests moved the multitude that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.

Ma i capi dei sacerdoti incitarono la folla perché piuttosto liberasse loro Barabba.

12 A nd Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

Pilato si rivolse di nuovo a loro, dicendo: «Che volete dunque che io faccia di colui che chiamate il re dei Giudei?»

13 A nd they cried out again, crucify him.

Ed essi di nuovo gridarono: «Crocifiggilo!»

14 T hen Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil has he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, crucify him.

Pilato disse loro: «Ma che male ha fatto?» Ma essi gridarono più forte che mai: «Crocifiggilo!»

15 ¶ And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

Pilato, volendo soddisfare la folla, liberò loro Barabba; e consegnò Gesù, dopo averlo flagellato, perché fosse crocifisso.

16 A nd the soldiers led him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they call together the whole band.

Allora i soldati lo condussero nel cortile interno, cioè dentro il pretorio, e radunarono tutta la coorte.

17 A nd they clothed him with purple and platted a crown of thorns and put it about his head

Lo vestirono di porpora e, dopo aver intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela misero sul capo

18 a nd began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

e cominciarono a salutarlo: «Salve, re dei Giudei!»

19 A nd they smote him on the head with a reed and spit upon him and bowing their knees worshipped him.

E gli percuotevano il capo con una canna, gli sputavano addosso e, mettendosi in ginocchio, si prostravano davanti a lui.

20 A nd when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him and put his own clothes on him and led him out to crucify him.

Dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora, lo rivestirono delle sue vesti e lo condussero fuori per crocifiggerlo. La crocifissione di Gesù

21 A nd they compel one Simon, a Cyrenian, who passed by coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

Costrinsero a portare la croce di lui un certo Simone di Cirene, padre di Alessandro e di Rufo, che passava di là tornando dai campi.

22 ¶ And they brought him unto the place of Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.

E condussero Gesù al luogo detto Golgota, che tradotto vuol dire «luogo del teschio».

23 A nd they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh, but he received it not.

Gli diedero del vino mescolato con mirra, ma non ne prese.

24 A nd when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

Poi lo crocifissero e si divisero le sue vesti, tirandole a sorte per sapere quello che ciascuno dovesse prendere.

25 A nd it was the third hour when they crucified him.

Era l’ora terza quando lo crocifissero.

26 A nd the inscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

L’iscrizione indicante il motivo della condanna diceva: «Il re dei Giudei».

27 A nd with him they crucified two thieves: the one on his right hand and the other on his left.

Con lui crocifissero due ladroni, uno alla sua destra e l’altro alla sua sinistra.

28 A nd the scripture was fulfilled, which says, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

29 A nd those that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads and saying, Ah, thou that would destroy the temple of God and build it in three days,

Quelli che passavano di là lo insultavano, scuotendo il capo e dicendo: «Eh, tu che distruggi il tempio e lo ricostruisci in tre giorni,

30 s ave thyself and come down from the cross.

salva te stesso e scendi giù dalla croce!»

31 L ikewise also the princes of the priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

Allo stesso modo anche i capi dei sacerdoti con gli scribi, beffandosi, dicevano l’uno all’altro: «Ha salvato altri e non può salvare se stesso.

32 L et the Christ, King of Israel, descend now from the stake that we may see and believe. And those that were crucified with him reviled him.

Il Cristo, il re d’Israele, scenda ora dalla croce, affinché vediamo e crediamo! » Anche quelli che erano stati crocifissi con lui lo insultavano.

33 ¶ And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

Venuta l’ora sesta, si fecero tenebre su tutto il paese fino all’ora nona.

34 A nd at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

All’ora nona Gesù gridò a gran voce: «Eloì, Eloì, lamà sabactàni? », che, tradotto, vuol dire: «Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?»

35 A nd some of those that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calls Elijah.

Alcuni dei presenti, udito ciò, dicevano: «Chiama Elia!»

36 A nd one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar and put it on a reed and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.

Uno di loro corse e, dopo aver inzuppato d’aceto una spugna, la pose in cima a una canna e gli diede da bere, dicendo: «Aspettate, vediamo se Elia viene a farlo scendere».

37 B ut Jesus, giving a great cry, expired.

Gesù, emesso un gran grido, rese lo spirito.

38 T hen the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom.

E la cortina del tempio si squarciò in due, da cima a fondo.

39 A nd when the centurion, who stood in front of him, saw that he so cried out and expired, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

E il centurione che era lì presente di fronte a Gesù, avendolo visto spirare in quel modo, disse: «Veramente quest’uomo era Figlio di Dio!»

40 T here were also some women looking on afar off, among whom was Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James the lesser and of Joses, and Salome

Vi erano pure delle donne che guardavano da lontano. Tra di loro vi erano anche Maria Maddalena, Maria, madre di Giacomo il minore e di Iose, e Salome,

41 ( who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered unto him), and many other women who came up with him unto Jerusalem.

che, mentre egli era in Galilea, lo seguivano e lo servivano, e molte altre che erano salite con lui a Gerusalemme. Il seppellimento di Gesù

42 ¶ And now when the evening was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

Essendo già sera (poiché era la Preparazione, cioè la vigilia del sabato),

43 J oseph of Arimathaea, a noble senator, who also waited for the kingdom of God, came and went in boldly unto Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

venne Giuseppe d’Arimatea, illustre membro del Consiglio, il quale aspettava anch’egli il regno di Dio; e, fattosi coraggio, si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù.

44 A nd Pilate marvelled that he was already dead; and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.

Pilato si meravigliò che fosse già morto; e, chiamato il centurione, gli domandò se fosse morto da molto tempo;

45 A nd when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

avutane conferma dal centurione, diede il corpo a Giuseppe.

46 A nd he bought fine linen and took him down and wrapped him in the linen and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

Questi, comprato un lenzuolo e tratto Gesù giù dalla croce, lo avvolse nel lenzuolo e lo pose in una tomba scavata nella roccia; poi rotolò una pietra contro l’apertura del sepolcro.

47 A nd Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

E Maria Maddalena e Maria, madre di Iose, stavano a guardare dove veniva messo.
