1 ¶ But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in grief.

Avevo infatti deciso in me stesso di non venire a rattristarvi una seconda volta.

2 F or if I make you grieve, who is he then that shall make me glad, but the same who is grieved by me?

Perché, se io vi rattristo, chi mi rallegrerà se non colui che sarà stato da me rattristato?

3 A nd I wrote this same unto you, lest when I came, I should have grief from those of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

Vi ho scritto a quel modo affinché, al mio arrivo, io non abbia tristezza da coloro dai quali dovrei avere gioia; avendo fiducia, riguardo a voi tutti, che la mia gioia è la gioia di tutti voi.

4 F or out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know how much more charity I have towards you.

Poiché vi ho scritto in grande afflizione e in angoscia di cuore con molte lacrime, non già per rattristarvi, ma per farvi conoscere l’amore grandissimo che ho per voi. Perdono per il colpevole

5 ¶ But if any have caused me grief, he has not grieved me, but in part, that I may not put a burden on you all.

Ora se qualcuno è stato causa di tristezza, egli ha rattristato non tanto me quanto, in qualche misura, per non esagerare, tutti voi.

6 S ufficient to such a one is this reprehension, which was inflicted of many.

Basta a quel tale la punizione inflittagli dalla maggioranza;

7 S o that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with too much grief.

quindi ora, al contrario, dovreste piuttosto perdonarlo e confortarlo, perché non abbia a rimanere oppresso da troppa tristezza.

8 T herefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your charity toward him.

Perciò vi esorto a confermargli il vostro amore;

9 F or to this end also I wrote, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things.

poiché anche per questo vi ho scritto: per mettervi alla prova e vedere se siete ubbidienti in ogni cosa.

10 T o whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also; for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes I forgave it in the person of Christ,

A chi voi perdonate qualcosa, perdono anch’io; perché anch’io quello che ho perdonato, se ho perdonato qualcosa, l’ho fatto per amore vostro, davanti a Cristo,

11 l est Satan should deceive us, for we do not ignore his devices.

affinché non siamo raggirati da Satana; infatti non ignoriamo le sue macchinazioni.

12 ¶ Having come to Troas for the gospel of the Christ, even though a door was opened unto me in the Lord,

Giunto a Troas per il vangelo di Cristo, una porta mi fu aperta dal Signore,

13 I had no rest in my spirit because I did not find Titus my brother, but taking my leave of them, I went from there into Macedonia.

ma non ero tranquillo nel mio spirito perché non vi trovai Tito, mio fratello; così, congedatomi da loro, partii per la Macedonia. Vittoria in Cristo

14 N ow thanks be unto God, who always causes us to triumph in the Christ and makes manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

Ma grazie siano rese a Dio, che sempre ci fa trionfare in Cristo e che per mezzo nostro spande dappertutto il profumo della sua conoscenza.

15 F or we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in those that are saved and in those that perish;

Noi siamo infatti davanti a Dio il profumo di Cristo fra quelli che sono sulla via della salvezza e fra quelli che sono sulla via della perdizione;

16 t o the one we are the savour of death unto death and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

per questi, un odore di morte, che conduce a morte; per quelli, un odore di vita, che conduce a vita. E chi è sufficiente a queste cose?

17 F or we are not as many, false merchandisers of the word of God, but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

Noi non siamo infatti come quei molti che falsificano la parola di Dio; ma parliamo mossi da sincerità, da parte di Dio, in presenza di Dio, in Cristo.
