1 ¶ If the LORD had not been for us, now may Israel say,

Canto dei pellegrinaggi. Di Davide. Se il Signore non fosse stato in nostro favore, – lo dica pure Israele –

2 I f the LORD had not been for us, when men rose up against us,

se il Signore non fosse stato in nostro favore, quando gli uomini ci assalirono,

3 t hen they would have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;

essi ci avrebbero inghiottiti vivi, talmente erano furiosi contro di noi.

4 t hen the waters would have overwhelmed us; the flood would have gone over our soul;

Allora le acque ci avrebbero sommersi, il torrente sarebbe passato sull’anima nostra;

5 t hen the proud waters would have gone over our soul.

allora sarebbero passate sull’anima nostra le acque tempestose.

6 ¶ Blessed be the LORD, who did not give us as a prey to their teeth.

Benedetto sia il Signore che non ci ha abbandonati in preda ai loro denti!

7 O ur soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers; the snare has broken, and we are escaped.

L’anima nostra è scampata come un uccello dal laccio dei cacciatori: il laccio è stato spezzato e noi siamo scampati.

8 O ur help is in the name of the LORD, who made the heaven and the earth.

Il nostro aiuto è nel nome del Signore, che ha fatto il cielo e la terra.
