1 ¶ Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!

Guai alla città ribelle, contaminata, alla città piena di soprusi!

2 S he did not obey the voice; she did not receive correction; she did not trust in the LORD; she did not draw near to her God.

Essa non dà ascolto ad alcuna voce, non accetta correzione, non si confida nel Signore, non si avvicina al suo Dio.

3 H er princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they do not leave a bone for tomorrow.

I suoi capi, in mezzo a lei, sono leoni ruggenti; i suoi giudici sono lupi della sera, che non serbano nulla per la mattina.

4 H er prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary; they have falsified the law.

I suoi profeti sono arroganti, perfidi; i suoi sacerdoti profanano le cose sante, infrangono la legge.

5 T he just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: each morning he shall bring his judgment to light; he never fails; but the unjust know no shame.

Il Signore è giusto in mezzo ad essa, egli non commette ingiustizie. Ogni mattina egli dispensa i suoi giudizi e non manca mai; ma il perverso non conosce vergogna.

6 I have caused the Gentiles to be cut off: their castles are desolate; I made their streets waste until no one passes by; their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man left, there is no inhabitant.

«Io ho sterminato delle nazioni, le loro torri sono distrutte; ho rovinato le loro strade, al punto che non vi passa più nessuno; le loro città sono distrutte, al punto che non c’è più nessuno, nessun abitante.

7 S aying, Surely now thou wilt fear me; thou wilt receive chastisement; so thy dwelling shall not be thrown down, all of which I visited upon her; but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

Io dicevo: “Se almeno tu volessi temermi, accettare la correzione! La tua dimora non sarebbe distrutta, nonostante tutto ciò che ho riservato per te”. Ma essi si sono affrettati a pervertire tutte le loro azioni.

8 ¶ Therefore wait for me, said the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey; for my judgment is to gather the Gentiles, that I may assemble the kingdoms to pour upon them my indignation, even all my fierce anger; for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

Perciò, aspettami», dice il Signore, «per il giorno che mi alzerò per il bottino; perché ho decretato di radunare le nazioni, di riunire i regni, per versare su di loro la mia indignazione, tutto l’ardore della mia ira. 9 F or then I will restore to the peoples the pure language that they may all call upon the name of the LORD to serve him with one consent.

«Allora io trasformerò le labbra dei popoli in labbra pure, affinché tutti invochino il nome del Signore, per servirlo di comune accordo.

10 F rom beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring me an offering.

Di là dai fiumi d’Etiopia i miei supplicanti, i miei figli dispersi, mi porteranno le loro offerte.

11 I n that day thou shalt not be ashamed for any of thy doings, in which thou hast rebelled against me, for then I will take away out of the midst of thee those that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no longer be haughty because of the mountain of my holiness.

Quel giorno tu non avrai da vergognarti per tutte le azioni con le quali hai peccato contro di me; perché, allora, io toglierò di mezzo a te quelli che trionfano con superbia, e tu smetterai di inorgoglirti sul mio monte santo.

12 I will also leave in the midst of thee a poor and humble people, and they shall wait in the name of the LORD.

Lascerò in mezzo a te un popolo umile e povero, che confiderà nel nome del Signore.

13 T he remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth, for they shall be fed and lie down, and no one shall make them afraid.

Il resto d’Israele non commetterà azioni malvagie, non dirà menzogne e non si troverà più un linguaggio ingannatore sulle sue labbra; perché essi pascoleranno, si coricheranno e non vi sarà più nessuno che li spaventi».

14 ¶ Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout with joy O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all thy heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

Prorompi in grida di gioia, o figlia di Sion! Alza grida di esultanza, o Israele! Rallègrati ed esulta con tutto il cuore, o figlia di Gerusalemme!

15 T he LORD has taken away thy judgments; he has cast out thine enemy; the LORD is king of Israel in the midst of thee; thou shalt not see evil any more.

Il Signore ha revocato le sue condanne contro di te, ha scacciato il tuo nemico. Il Re d’Israele, il Signore, è in mezzo a te, non dovrai più temere alcun male.

16 I n that time it shall be said to Jerusalem, Do not fear; and to Zion, Do not let thine hands be slack.

Quel giorno si dirà a Gerusalemme: «Non temere, o Sion, le tue mani non si indeboliscano!

17 T he LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save; he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love; he will joy over thee with singing.

Il Signore, il tuo Dio, è in mezzo a te, come un potente che salva. Egli si rallegrerà con gran gioia per causa tua; si acqueterà nel suo amore, esulterà per causa tua con grida di gioia».

18 I will gather those that are weary because of the long time, who are thine, unto whom her confusion was a burden.

«Io raccoglierò quelli che sono nel dolore, lontano dalle feste solenni; sono tuoi, su di loro pesa la vergogna!

19 B ehold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee; and I will save her that is lame and gather her that was driven out; and I will make them a praise and of good reputation in every land where they have been put to shame.

In quel tempo io agirò contro tutti quelli che ti opprimono; salverò la pecora che zoppica, raccoglierò quella che è stata cacciata via, e li renderò gloriosi e famosi in tutti i paesi dove sono stati nella vergogna.

20 A t that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you; for I will give you as fame and as praise among all peoples of the earth, when I shall return your captives before your eyes, saith the LORD.

In quel tempo io vi ricondurrò, in quel tempo vi raccoglierò; perché vi renderò famosi e gloriosi fra tutti i popoli della terra, quando farò tornare, sotto i vostri occhi, quelli che sono in esilio», dice il Signore.
