1 ¶ Now these are the Gentiles which the LORD left, to prove Israel with them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

Questi sono i popoli che il Signore lasciò stare per mettere alla prova, per mezzo di essi, Israele, cioè tutti quelli che non avevano visto le guerre di Canaan.

2 h e left them only that the generations of the sons of Israel might know, and to teach them war, only for those that had known nothing before:

Egli voleva soltanto che le nuove generazioni dei figli d’Israele conoscessero e imparassero la guerra: quelli, per lo meno, che non l’avevano mai vista prima. Questi popoli erano:

3 n amely, five cardinals of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites that dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

i cinque prìncipi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni e gli Ivvei, che abitavano la montagna del Libano, dal monte Baal-Ermon fino all’ingresso di Camat.

4 T hese, therefore, were left to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

Queste nazioni servirono a mettere Israele alla prova, per vedere se Israele avrebbe ubbidito ai comandamenti che il Signore aveva dato ai loro padri per mezzo di Mosè.

5 A nd as the sons of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites,

Così i figli d’Israele abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Ittiti, agli Amorei, ai Ferezei, agli Ivvei e ai Gebusei;

6 t hey took their daughters to be their wives and gave their daughters to their sons and served their gods.

sposarono le loro figlie, diedero le proprie figlie come spose ai loro figli e servirono i loro dèi. Vittoria di Otniel sul re di Mesopotamia

7 A nd the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and forgot the LORD their God and served the Baalim and the groves.

I figli d’Israele fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; dimenticarono il Signore, il loro Dio, e servirono gli idoli di Baal e di Astarte.

8 ¶ Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia, and the sons of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

Perciò l’ira del Signore si accese contro Israele ed egli li diede nelle mani di Cusan-Risataim, re di Mesopotamia; e i figli d’Israele furono servi di Cusan-Risataim per otto anni.

9 A nd when the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a saviour to the sons of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

Poi i figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore, e il Signore fece sorgere per loro un liberatore: Otniel, figlio di Chenaz, fratello minore di Caleb; ed egli li liberò.

10 A nd the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel and went out to war; and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand, and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

Lo Spirito del Signore venne su di lui ed egli fu giudice d’Israele; uscì a combattere e il Signore gli diede nelle mani Cusan-Risataim, re di Mesopotamia; e la sua mano fu potente contro Cusan-Risataim.

11 A nd the land had rest forty years. And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, died.

Il paese ebbe pace per quarant’anni; poi Otniel, figlio di Chenaz, morì. Vittoria di Eud su Moab

12 ¶ And the sons of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon, the king of Moab, against Israel because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

I figli d’Israele continuarono a fare ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; così il Signore rese forte Eglon, re di Moab, contro Israele, perché essi avevano fatto ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore.

13 A nd he gathered unto him the sons of Ammon and of Amalek and went and smote Israel and took the city of palm trees.

Eglon radunò intorno a sé i figli di Ammon e di Amalec; poi marciò contro Israele, lo sconfisse e s’impadronì della città delle palme.

14 S o the sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

I figli d’Israele furono servi di Eglon, re di Moab, per diciotto anni.

15 B ut when the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a saviour, Ehud, the son of Gera, a son of Jemini, a man, who had his right hand impeded, and by him the sons of Israel sent a present unto Eglon, the king of Moab.

I figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore ed egli fece sorgere per loro un liberatore: Eud, figlio di Ghera, beniaminita, che era mancino. I figli d’Israele mandarono per mezzo di lui un regalo a Eglon, re di Moab.

16 B ut Ehud had made himself a two-edged sword of a cubit length, and he girded it under his clothing upon his right thigh.

Eud si fece una spada a due tagli, lunga un cubito, e la cinse sotto la sua veste, al fianco destro.

17 A nd he brought the present unto Eglon, king of Moab, and Eglon was a very fat man.

Quindi offrì il regalo a Eglon, re di Moab, che era un uomo molto grasso.

18 A nd when he had offered the present, he sent away the people that had brought the present.

Quando ebbe finito la presentazione del regalo, rimandò la gente che l’aveva portato.

19 B ut he, himself turned again from the graven images that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret word for thee, O king, who then said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

Ma egli, giunto agli idoli che sono presso a Ghilgal, tornò indietro e disse: «O re, io ho qualcosa da dirti in segreto». Il re disse: «Silenzio!» Tutti quelli che gli stavano intorno, uscirono.

20 A nd Ehud came unto him, and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a word from God unto thee. Then he arose out of his seat.

Allora Eud si avvicinò al re, che stava seduto nella sala di sopra, riservata a lui solo, per prendervi il fresco, e gli disse: «Ho una parola da dirti da parte di Dio». Eglon si alzò dal suo seggio;

21 B ut Ehud put forth his left hand and took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into Eglon’s belly;

ed Eud, stesa la mano sinistra, prese la spada dal suo fianco destro e gliela piantò nel ventre.

22 i n such a manner that the haft also went in after the blade, and the fat closed upon the blade so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly, and the excrement came out.

Anche l’elsa entrò dopo la lama; e il grasso si rinchiuse attorno alla lama, poiché egli non gli ritirò dal ventre la spada, che gli usciva da dietro.

23 T hen Ehud went forth through the porch and shut the doors of the parlour upon him and locked them.

Poi Eud uscì nel portico, chiuse le porte della sala di sopra e mise il chiavistello.

24 W hen he was gone out, his slaves came; and when they saw that the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Peradventure he covers his feet in his summer chamber.

Quando fu uscito, vennero i servi, i quali guardarono, ed ecco che le porte della sala di sopra erano chiuse con il chiavistello; e dissero: «Certo egli fa i suoi bisogni nello stanzino della sala fresca».

25 A nd having waited until they were confounded and he had not opened the doors of the parlour; therefore, they took a key and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

Tanto aspettarono, che ne furono preoccupati; e poiché il re non apriva le porte della sala, quelli presero la chiave, aprirono, ed ecco che il loro signore era steso per terra, morto.

26 B ut while they had waited, Ehud escaped and passed beyond the graven images and escaped unto Seirath.

Mentre essi indugiavano, Eud si diede alla fuga, passò oltre gli idoli e si mise in salvo a Seira.

27 A nd as he entered in, he blew the shofar in the mountain of Ephraim, and the sons of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

Quando fu arrivato, suonò la tromba nella regione montuosa di Efraim, e i figli d’Israele scesero con lui dalla regione montuosa, ed egli si mise alla loro testa.

28 T hen he said unto them, Follow after me, for the LORD has delivered your enemies, the Moabites, into your hands. And they went down after him and took the fords of the Jordan towards Moab and did not let anyone pass.

Disse loro: «Seguitemi, perché il Signore vi ha dato nelle mani i Moabiti, vostri nemici». Quelli scesero dietro a lui, s’impadronirono dei guadi del Giordano per impedire il passaggio ai Moabiti e non lasciarono passare nessuno.

29 A nd they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all fat, and all men of war, and there escaped not a man.

In quel tempo sconfissero circa diecimila Moabiti, tutti robusti e valorosi; non ne scampò neppure uno.

30 S o Moab was subjected that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years.

Così, in quel giorno, Moab fu umiliato sotto la mano d’Israele e il paese ebbe pace per ottant’anni. Vittoria di Samgar sui Filistei

31 ¶ And after him was Shamgar, the son of Anath, who slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad, and he also saved Israel.

Dopo Eud, venne Samgar, figlio di Anat. Egli sconfisse seicento Filistei con un pungolo da buoi; anch’egli liberò Israele.
