1 ¶ And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come together in Shechem to make him king.

Roboamo andò a Sichem, perché tutto Israele era venuto a Sichem per farlo re.

2 A nd when Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, heard it, who was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of Solomon, the king, Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

Quando lo seppe Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, che si trovava ancora in Egitto – dov’era fuggito per scampare dal re Salomone – tornò dall’Egitto.

3 A nd they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

Lo mandarono a chiamare, e Geroboamo con tutto Israele vennero a parlare a Roboamo e gli dissero:

4 T hy father made our yoke grievous; now, therefore, ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

«Tuo padre ha reso duro il nostro giogo; ora rendi tu più lievi la dura servitù e il giogo pesante che tuo padre ci ha imposti, e noi ti serviremo».

5 A nd he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.

Egli rispose loro: «Tornate da me fra tre giorni!» E il popolo se ne andò.

6 T hen King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon, his father, while he yet lived, saying, What do you counsel to reply to this people?

Il re Roboamo si consigliò con i vecchi che erano stati al servizio del re Salomone suo padre mentre era vivo e disse: «Che cosa mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo?»

7 A nd they spoke unto him, saying, If thou wilt seek the good of this people and please them and speak good words to them, they will be thy slaves for ever.

Quelli gli parlarono così: «Se ti mostri benevolo verso questo popolo e lo esaudisci, e se gli parli con bontà, ti sarà servo per sempre».

8 B ut he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.

Ma Roboamo trascurò il consiglio datogli dai vecchi e si consigliò con i giovani che erano cresciuti con lui ed erano al suo servizio,

9 A nd he said unto them, What do you counsel us to reply to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?

e disse loro: «Come consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo che mi ha parlato dicendo: “Allevia il giogo che tuo padre ci ha imposto?”»

10 T hen the young men that were brought up with him spoke unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spoke unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins.

I giovani che erano cresciuti con lui gli risposero: «Ecco quel che dirai a questo popolo che si è rivolto a te dicendo: “Tuo padre ha reso pesante il nostro giogo, e tu rendicelo più leggero!” Gli risponderai così: “Il mio dito mignolo è più grosso del corpo di mio padre;

11 F or whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

mio padre vi ha caricati d’un giogo pesante, e io lo renderò più pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con la frusta, e io vi castigherò con i flagelli a punte”».

12 ¶ So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had commanded, saying, Come again to me on the third day.

Tre giorni dopo Geroboamo e tutto il popolo vennero da Roboamo, come aveva ordinato il re, dicendo: «Tornate da me fra tre giorni».

13 A nd the king answered them roughly, for King Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men

Il re rispose loro duramente, abbandonando il consiglio che i vecchi gli avevano dato;

14 a nd answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

e parlò loro secondo il consiglio dei giovani, e disse: «Mio padre ha reso pesante il vostro giogo, e io lo renderò più pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con la frusta, e io vi castigherò con i flagelli a punte».

15 S o the king did not hearken unto the people, for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spoke by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, unto Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.

Così il re non diede ascolto al popolo; perché tutto ciò era diretto da Dio, affinché si adempisse la parola che il Signore aveva pronunciata per mezzo di Aiia di Silo a Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat.

16 A nd when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David or inheritance in the son of Jesse? Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now, David, see to thine own house! So all Israel went to their tents.

Quando tutto Israele vide che il re non gli dava ascolto, rispose al re, dicendo: «Che abbiamo da fare con Davide? Noi non abbiamo nulla in comune con il figlio d’Isai! Ognuno alla sua tenda, o Israele! Provvedi ora alla tua casa, o Davide!» E tutto Israele se ne andò alle sue tende.

17 B ut Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah.

Ma sui figli d’Israele che abitavano nelle città di Giuda regnò Roboamo.

18 T hen King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the tribute and the sons of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. So King Rehoboam made speed to get into a chariot and fled to Jerusalem.

Il re Roboamo mandò loro Adoram, responsabile dei lavori forzati; ma i figli d’Israele lo lapidarono, ed egli morì. Il re Roboamo salì in fretta sopra un carro per fuggire a Gerusalemme.

19 T hus Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

Così Israele si ribellò alla casa di Davide, ed è rimasto ribelle fino a oggi.
