1 ¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered and said,

2 C an a man be profitable unto God? For he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

«Può l’uomo recare qualche vantaggio a Dio? No; il savio non reca vantaggio che a se stesso.

3 I s it any pleasure to the Almighty that thou art justified? Or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect?

Se sei giusto, ne viene forse qualche vantaggio all’Onnipotente? Se sei integro nella tua condotta, ne trae egli un guadagno?

4 W ill he reprove thee or will he enter with thee into judgment because he fears thee?

È forse per la paura che ha di te che egli ti castiga o viene con te in giudizio?

5 ¶ Certainly thy wickedness is great and thine iniquities have no end.

La tua malvagità non è forse grande, e le tue iniquità non sono infinite?

6 F or thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing.

Tu, per un nulla, prendevi pegno dai tuoi fratelli, spogliavi delle loro vesti gli ignudi.

7 T hou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry.

Allo stanco non davi da bere l’acqua, all’affamato rifiutavi il pane.

8 B ut the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

La terra apparteneva al più forte, l’uomo influente vi piantava la sua casa.

9 T hou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

Rimandavi a vuoto le vedove, le braccia degli orfani erano spezzate.

10 T herefore, snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubles thee

Ecco perché sei circondato di lacci, spaventato da improvvisi terrori.

11 o r darkness, that thou canst not see, and abundance of waters cover thee.

O non vedi le tenebre che ti avvolgono, la piena d’acque che ti sommerge?

12 I s not God in the height of the heavens? Behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

«Dio non è forse lassù nei cieli? Guarda lassù le stelle eccelse, come stanno in alto!

13 A nd thou shalt say, What does God know? How can he judge through the darkness?

E tu dici: “Dio che sa? Può egli giudicare attraverso il buio?

14 T hick clouds are his hiding place, and he does not see; and he walks in the circuit of heaven.

Fitte nubi lo coprono e nulla vede; egli passeggia sulla vòlta dei cieli”.

15 ¶ Dost thou desire to keep the old way which wicked men have trodden?

Vuoi dunque seguire l’antica via per cui camminarono gli uomini malvagi,

16 W ho were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood.

che furono portati via prima del tempo e il cui fondamento fu come un torrente che scorre?

17 W ho said unto God, Depart from us; and what can the Almighty do unto us?

Essi dicevano a Dio: “Allontànati da noi! Che ci può fare l’Onnipotente?”

18 H e had filled their houses with good things. Therefore, the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Eppure Dio aveva riempito le loro case di beni! Ah, lungi da me il consiglio degli empi!

19 T he righteous shall see it and be glad; and the innocent laughs them to scorn.

I giusti, vedendo la loro rovina, ne gioiscono, e l’innocente si fa beffe di loro:

20 W hereas our substance was not cut down, when the fire had consumed the rest of them.

“Vedete se non sono distrutti gli avversari nostri! La loro abbondanza l’ha divorata il fuoco!”

21 ¶ Make up thy friendship now with him, and thou shalt have peace; thereby good shall come unto thee.

«Riconcìliati dunque con Dio; avrai pace, ti sarà resa la prosperità.

22 R eceive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

Ricevi istruzioni dalla sua bocca, riponi le sue parole nel tuo cuore.

23 I f thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tent;

Se torni all’Onnipotente, se allontani l’iniquità dalle tue tende, sarai ristabilito.

24 t hen thou shalt lay up gold as dust and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

Getta l’oro nella polvere, l’oro di Ofir tra i ciottoli del fiume,

25 A nd the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

e l’Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, egli ti sarà come l’argento acquistato con fatica.

26 F or then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

Allora l’Onnipotente sarà la tua delizia, e alzerai la faccia verso Dio.

27 T hou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

Lo pregherai, egli ti esaudirà, e tu scioglierai i voti che avrai fatti.

28 T hou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

Quello che intraprenderai, ti riuscirà; sul tuo cammino risplenderà la luce.

29 W hen others are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

Se viene l’umiliazione, tu pregherai per essere rialzato: Dio soccorre chi ha gli occhi a terra;

30 H e shall deliver the island of the innocent; and in the pureness of thine hands thou shalt be kept.

libererà anche chi non è innocente, egli sarà salvo per la purezza delle tue mani».
