1 ¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered and said,

Atunci Elifaz din Teman i-a zis:

2 C an a man be profitable unto God? For he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

„Poate un om să-i fie de folos lui Dumnezeu? Chiar cel mai înţelept Îi poate sluji la ceva?

3 I s it any pleasure to the Almighty that thou art justified? Or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect?

Ce bucurie are Cel Atotputernic dacă trăieşti drept? Ce câştigă El dacă sunt curate căile tale?

4 W ill he reprove thee or will he enter with thee into judgment because he fears thee?

Pentru evlavia ta te mustră El şi intră la judecată cu tine?

5 ¶ Certainly thy wickedness is great and thine iniquities have no end.

Nu e mare răutatea ta? Nu sunt fără sfârşit nedreptăţile tale?

6 F or thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing.

N-ai luat tu garanţii de la fraţii tăi fără temei? Ai despuiat oameni de îmbrăcămintea lor.

7 T hou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry.

N-ai dat apă celui însetat şi n-ai vrut să dai pâine celui flămând,

8 B ut the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

deşi erai un om puternic şi ţara era a ta, erai un om onorat; trăiai în ea.

9 T hou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

Tu ai trimis pe văduve cu mâinile goale şi ai zdrobit puterea celor orfani.

10 T herefore, snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubles thee

De aceea eşti înconjurat de curse şi eşti cuprins brusc de spaimă.

11 o r darkness, that thou canst not see, and abundance of waters cover thee.

De aceea e atât de întuneric, că nu poţi vedea şi te acoperă un şuvoi de ape.

12 I s not God in the height of the heavens? Behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

Nu este Dumnezeu în înălţimile cerului? Priveşte cât de măreţe sunt cele mai înalte stele!

13 A nd thou shalt say, What does God know? How can he judge through the darkness?

Totuşi tu zici: «Ce ştie Dumnezeu? Poate El judeca prin întunericul adânc?

14 T hick clouds are his hiding place, and he does not see; and he walks in the circuit of heaven.

Nori groşi Îl înfăşoară şi astfel nu ne vede, atunci când El umblă pe bolta cerului.»

15 ¶ Dost thou desire to keep the old way which wicked men have trodden?

Te vei ţine de calea veche pe care au urmat-o cei răi?

16 W ho were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood.

Ei au fost smulşi înainte de vreme; temelia le-a fost spălată de un şuvoi de apă.

17 W ho said unto God, Depart from us; and what can the Almighty do unto us?

Ei I-au zis lui Dumnezeu: «Pleacă de la noi! Ce ne poate face Cel Atotputernic?»

18 H e had filled their houses with good things. Therefore, the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Totuşi El le-a umplut casele de bunătăţi. Dar departe de mine sfatul celor răi!

19 T he righteous shall see it and be glad; and the innocent laughs them to scorn.

Cei drepţi văd căderea lor şi se bucură şi cel nevinovat râde de ei, zicând:

20 W hereas our substance was not cut down, when the fire had consumed the rest of them.

«Duşmanii noştri sunt nimiciţi, focul le mistuie bogăţia!»

21 ¶ Make up thy friendship now with him, and thou shalt have peace; thereby good shall come unto thee.

Supune-te Lui şi fă pace cu El şi aşa vei avea parte de bine.

22 R eceive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

Primeşte învăţătura din gura Sa, aşterne-ţi în inimă cuvintele Lui.

23 I f thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tent;

Dacă te întorci la Cel Atotputernic, vei fi repus în drepturi; dacă izgoneşti răutatea departe de cortul tău,

24 t hen thou shalt lay up gold as dust and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

dacă vei arunca aurul în ţărână şi aurul de Ofir în albia pâraielor,

25 A nd the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

dacă Cel Atotputernic va fi aurul tău şi argintul tău cel mai preţios,

26 F or then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

atunci te vei bucura în Cel Atotputernic şi-ţi vei ridica faţa spre Dumnezeu.

27 T hou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

Te vei ruga Lui şi El te va auzi şi tu îţi vei ţine jurămintele.

28 T hou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

Ce vei hotărî se va împlini, lumina va străluci pe căile tale.

29 W hen others are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

Când oamenii sunt smeriţi Tu spui: «Să fie ridicaţi!» El va izbăvi pe cel cu privirea plecată.

30 H e shall deliver the island of the innocent; and in the pureness of thine hands thou shalt be kept.

El va elibera chiar şi pe cei vinovaţi; ei vor scăpa datorită curăţiei mâinilor tale.“
