1 ¶ And when Rachel saw that she gave Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister and said unto Jacob, Give me sons, or else I will die.

Când Rahela a văzut că ea nu i-a născut nici un copil lui Iacov, a invidiat-o pe sora sa şi i-a zis lui Iacov: – Dă-mi copii, altfel voi muri!

2 A nd Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel; and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who has withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

Iacov s-a mâniat pe Rahela şi i-a răspuns: – Sunt eu în locul lui Dumnezeu, Care te-a oprit să ai copii?

3 A nd she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

Apoi ea i-a zis: – Aici este sclava mea, Bilha! Intră la ea, pentru ca ea să nască pe genunchii mei şi pentru ca să-mi pot zidi şi eu o familie prin ea.

4 A nd she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife; and Jacob went in unto her.

Astfel, Rahela i-a dat-o de soţie lui Iacov pe sclava ei, Bilha; Iacov a intrat la ea,

5 A nd Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son unto Jacob.

iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un fiu.

6 A nd Rachel said, God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son. Therefore she called his name Dan.

Atunci Rahela a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a făcut dreptate, mi-a auzit glasul şi mi-a dat un fiu!“ De aceea i-a pus numele Dan.

7 A nd Bilhah Rachel’s maid conceived again and gave birth to a second son unto Jacob.

Bilha, sclava Rahelei, a rămas din nou însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al doilea fiu.

8 A nd Rachel said, With great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed; and she called his name Naphtali.

Atunci Rahela a zis: „Cu lupte mari m-am războit cu sora mea şi am biruit!“ De aceea i-a pus numele Neftali.

9 W hen Leah saw that she had stopped bearing children, she took Zilpah, her maid and gave her Jacob to wife.

Când Lea a văzut că ea a încetat să mai aibă copii, a luat-o pe sclava ei, Zilpa, şi i-a dat-o de soţie lui Iacov.

10 A nd Zilpah, Leah’s maid, gave birth to a son unto Jacob.

Zilpa, sclava Leei, i-a născut un fiu lui Iacov.

11 A nd Leah said, Good venture has come; and she called his name Gad.

Lea a zis: „Ce noroc!“ şi i-a pus numele Gad.

12 A nd Zilpah, Leah’s maid, gave birth to a second son unto Jacob.

Zilpa, sclava Leei, i-a născut lui Iacov un al doilea fiu.

13 A nd Leah said, Blessed am I, for the daughters will call me blessed; and she called his name Asher.

Lea a zis: „Cât de fericită sunt, pentru că femeile mă vor numi fericită!“; şi i-a pus numele Aşer.

14 ¶ And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.

Pe vremea seceratului grâului, Ruben a plecat la câmp şi a găsit mandragore pe care le-a adus mamei lui, Lea. Rahela i-a zis Leei: – Te rog, dă-mi şi mie din mandragorele fiului tău.

15 A nd she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband and would thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.

Dar ea a răspuns: – Nu-ţi ajunge că mi-ai luat bărbatul, de vrei să iei şi mandragorele fiului meu? – Bine, a spus Rahela, se poate culca cu tine la noapte în schimbul mandragorelor fiului tău.

16 A nd Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.

Seara, când Iacov se întorcea de la câmp, Lea i-a ieşit în întâmpinare şi i-a zis: „Trebuie să intri la mine, pentru că te-am cumpărat cu mandragorele fiului meu.“ Astfel, el s-a culcat cu ea în acea noapte.

17 A nd God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son unto Jacob.

Dumnezeu a ascultat-o pe Lea, iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al cincilea fiu.

18 A nd Leah said, God has given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband; and she called his name Issachar.

Lea a zis: „Dumnezeu m-a răsplătit, pentru că am dat-o pe sclava mea soţului meu.“ Şi i-a pus numele Isahar.

19 A nd Leah conceived again and gave birth to the sixth son unto Jacob.

Lea a rămas din nou însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al şaselea fiu.

20 A nd Leah said, God has endued me with a good dowry; now my husband will dwell with me because I have born him six sons; and she called his name Zebulun.

Ea a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a oferit un dar preţios! De data aceasta soţul meu mă va onora, pentru că i-am născut şase fii!“ Şi i-a pus celui din urmă numele Zabulon.

21 A nd afterwards she gave birth to a daughter and called her name Dinah.

După aceea a născut o fiică pe care a numit-o Dina.

22 A nd God remembered Rachel and God hearkened to her and opened her womb.

Dumnezeu Şi-a adus aminte de Rahela, a ascultat-o şi i-a deschis pântecele.

23 A nd she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, God has taken away my reproach;

Ea a rămas însărcinată, a născut un fiu şi a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a luat ocara!“

24 a nd she called his name Joseph, saying, Let the LORD add unto me another son.

I-a pus numele Iosif, zicând: „ Domnul să-mi mai adauge un fiu!“ Îmbogăţirea lui Iacov

25 ¶ And it came to pass when Rachel had given birth to Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, and I shall go unto my place and to my land.

După ce Rahela l-a născut pe Iosif, Iacov i-a zis lui Laban: – Lasă-mă să plec, să mă întorc acasă, în ţara mea.

26 G ive me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go, for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.

Dă-mi soţiile şi copiii pentru care ţi-am slujit, ca astfel să pot pleca, căci ştii cât ţi-am slujit.

27 A nd Laban said unto him, Let me now find grace in thine eyes, I have learned by experience that the LORD has blessed me for thy sake.

Dar Laban i-a răspuns: – Dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la tine, te rog să mai rămâi. Am aflat prin ghicire că Domnul m-a binecuvântat datorită ţie;

28 A nd he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.

spune-mi plata şi ţi-o voi da.

29 A nd he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee and how many livestock thou hast with me.

Atunci Iacov i-a zis: – Ştii cum ţi-am slujit şi cum le-a mers animalelor cu mine,

30 F or it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude, and the LORD has blessed thee since my coming; and now when shall I provide for my own house also?

pentru că puţinul pe care-l aveai înainte să vin eu s-a înmulţit foarte mult; Domnul te-a binecuvântat oriunde m-am dus eu. Acum dar, când voi lucra şi pentru familia mea?

31 A nd he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me anything; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock.

Laban a întrebat: – Ce să-ţi dau? – Nu trebuie să-mi dai nimic, a răspuns Iacov. Dacă vrei să continui să-ţi păstoresc şi să-ţi păzesc turma, fă următorul lucru pentru mine:

32 I will pass through all thy flock today, setting apart all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown rams among the rams, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and of such shall be my hire.

lasă-mă să trec astăzi prin turma ta şi să pun deoparte toţi mieii pestriţi şi cu pete, toţi mieii negri şi toţi iezii cu pete şi pestriţi; aceasta să-mi fie plata.

33 S o shall my righteousness answer for me tomorrow, when my hire shall come before thy face; each one that is not speckled and spotted among my goats and brown among my sheep shall be counted stolen with me.

În viitor, dreptatea mea va vorbi pentru mine atunci când îmi vei vedea plata: tot ce nu va fi pătat sau pestriţ între capre şi negru între miei, dar care va fi găsit la mine, să fie socotit ca furat.

34 A nd Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.

– Bine! a spus Laban. Fie aşa cum ai zis.

35 A nd he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep and gave them into the hand of his sons.

În acea zi, el a pus deoparte ţapii vărgaţi şi cu pete, toate caprele pestriţe şi cu pete, toate cele care aveau alb pe ele, şi toţi mieii negri şi le-a dat în grija fiilor săi.

36 A nd he set three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.

Apoi a pus o distanţă de trei zile între el şi Iacov, în timp ce Iacov continua să păstorească restul turmelor lui Laban.

37 ¶ And Jacob took rods of green poplar and of the almond and chestnut tree and peeled white strakes in them and made the white appear which was in the rods.

Iacov a luat nuiele verzi de plop, de migdal şi de platan şi le-a descojit, astfel încât să se poată vedea lemnul alb al acestora.

38 A nd he set the rods which he had peeled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink that they should conceive when they came to drink.

Apoi a pus nuielele pe care le-a descojit înaintea oilor, în jgheaburi, adică în adăpătoare, de unde veneau oile să bea, pentru ca ele să zămislească atunci când veneau să bea.

39 A nd the flocks conceived before the rods and brought forth ringstraked, speckled, and spotted sheep.

Oile au zămislit înaintea nuielelor şi au fătat miei vărgaţi, pestriţi şi cu pete.

40 A nd Jacob separated the lambs, and put with his flock the ringstraked and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves and did not put them together with Laban’s sheep.

Iacov a despărţit mieii, iar oile lui Laban le-a pus cu faţa spre oile negre şi pestriţe. El şi-a pus deoparte turmele lui şi nu le-a amestecat cu cele ale lui Laban.

41 A nd it came to pass, whenever the stronger sheep conceived, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the sheep in the gutters that they might conceive among the rods.

Ori de câte ori oile mai puternice erau în călduri, Iacov punea nuiele înaintea lor, în jgheaburi, pentru ca ele să zămislească lângă acestea.

42 B ut when the sheep were feeble, he did not put them in; so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.

Dar când oile erau slabe, nu punea nuiele, astfel încât cele slabe erau pentru Laban, iar cele puternice, pentru Iacov.

43 A nd the man increased exceedingly, and had many sheep, and maidslaves and menslaves, and camels, and asses.

Acest om s-a îmbogăţit foarte mult şi avea multe turme, sclave şi sclavi, cămile şi măgari.
