1 ¶ Saul was as a son of one year when he began to reign, and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

Saul era în vârstă de treizeci de ani când a ajuns rege şi a domnit timp de patruzeci şi doi de ani peste Israel.

2 S aul chose three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in Mount Bethel and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and of the rest of the people he sent each one to his tent.

Saul şi-a ales trei mii de bărbaţi din Israel: două mii erau cu el în Micmaş şi în regiunea muntoasă a Betelului, iar o mie erau cu Ionatan în Ghiva lui Beniamin. Pe ceilalţi din popor i-a trimis acasă.

3 A nd Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul caused the shofar to be blown throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

Ionatan a atacat garnizoana filistenilor care se afla la Gheva, iar filistenii au aflat lucrul acesta. Atunci Saul a pus să se sufle din corn în toată ţara, spunând: „Să audă evreii!“

4 A nd all Israel heard it said that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines and also that Israel had become a stench unto the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

Şi s-a auzit în tot Israelul că Saul a atacat garnizoana filistenilor şi că Israel s-a făcut urât acestora. Poporul a fost chemat să i se alăture lui Saul, la Ghilgal.

5 T hen the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude; and they came up and pitched camp in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

Filistenii s-au adunat pentru a lupta cu Israel. Erau trei mii de care şi şase mii de călăreţi, trupe atât de numeroase cât nisipul de pe malul mării. Au venit şi şi-au aşezat tabăra la Micmaş, la răsărit de Bet-Aven.

6 W hen the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves and in thickets and in rocks and in high places and in pits.

Când bărbaţii lui Israel s-au văzut la strâmtorare (căci oştirea lor era în impas) au început să se ascundă în peşteri, în tufişuri, printre stânci, în gropi şi în fântâni.

7 A nd some of the Hebrews went over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

Unii dintre evrei chiar au trecut Iordanul înspre regiunile Gad şi Ghilad. Saul se afla încă la Ghilgal şi toţi cei care erau cu el tremurau de frică.

8 ¶ And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were deserting from him.

El a aşteptat şapte zile, timpul hotărât de către Samuel. Dar pentru că Samuel nu venea la Ghilgal, oamenii lui Saul au început să se împrăştie.

9 T hen Saul said, Bring me a burnt offering and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

Atunci Saul a zis: „Aduceţi la mine arderea de tot şi jertfele de pace.“ Şi a jertfit arderea de tot.

10 A nd it came to pass that as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him that he might bless him.

Tocmai în momentul în care sfârşea de adus arderea de tot, a sosit şi Samuel. Saul i-a ieşit în întâmpinare ca să-l salute.

11 T hen Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were leaving me and that thou didst not come within the days appointed and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash,

– Ce ai făcut? i-a zis Samuel. Saul i-a răspuns: – Când am văzut că oamenii mei au început să se împrăştie, că tu nu vii la timpul hotărât şi că filistenii sunt adunaţi la Micmaş,

12 t herefore, I said, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD. I forced myself, therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

mi-am zis: „Filistenii vor înainta împotriva mea la Ghilgal, iar eu încă nu am căutat faţa Domnului.“ De aceea am îndrăznit să jertfesc eu arderea de tot.

13 T hen Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee, for now the LORD would have established thy kingdom over Israel for ever.

Samuel i-a zis lui Saul: – Ai lucrat ca un nebun şi nu ai păzit porunca pe care ţi-o dăduse Domnul, Dumnezeul tău. Dacă ai fi ascultat, Domnul ţi-ar fi întărit pentru totdeauna domnia peste Israel.

14 B ut now thy kingdom shall not stand; the LORD has sought a man after his own heart unto whom the LORD has commanded that he be captain over his people because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

Acum însă domnia ta nu va mai dăinui. Domnul Şi-a găsit un om după inima Lui şi l-a rânduit să fie conducătorul poporului Său. Şi aceasta fiindcă nu ai ascultat de porunca Domnului.

15 ¶ And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

Samuel s-a ridicat şi a plecat din Ghilgal la Ghiva lui Beniamin. Saul a numărat oamenii care erau cu el şi au ieşit în jur de şase sute de bărbaţi.

16 A nd Saul and Jonathan, his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin, but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

Saul şi Ionatan, fiul său, împreună cu aceşti bărbaţi au rămas la Ghiva, în Beniamin, în timp ce filistenii şi-au aşezat tabăra la Micmaş.

17 A nd three companies came out of the camp of the Philistines to destroy the land. One company turned unto the way that leads to Ophrah unto the land of Shual.

Din tabăra filistenilor au ieşit trei cete de năvălitori ca să pustiască. O ceată a luat-o pe drumul spre Ofra, în regiunea Şual,

18 A nother company turned the way to Bethhoron, and another company turned to the way of the border that looks to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

o alta a luat-o pe drumul spre Bet-Horon, iar ultima – pe drumul spre hotarul care duce în valea Ţeboim, spre pustie.

19 N ow there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines had said, Lest peradventure the Hebrews make swords or spears.

Pe vremea aceea, în tot Israelul nu se găsea nici un fierar deoarece filistenii ziseseră: „Evreii nu trebuie să-şi facă săbii sau suliţe.“

20 B ut all the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen each man his share and his coulter and his axe and his mattock

Prin urmare, fiecare israelit se ducea la filisteni ca să-şi ascută fierul pentru plug, sapa, toporul şi secera.

21 a nd when they had nicks in the mattocks and the coulters and the forks and the axes, or to fix a goad.

Preţul era de un pim pentru ascuţirea fierului de plug şi al sapei şi de o treime dintr-un şechel pentru ascuţirea furcii, toporului şi a ţepuşei cu care se mână boii.

22 S o it came to pass in the day of battle that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan except with Saul and with Jonathan his son who had them.

De aceea, în ziua luptei, nici unul din luptătorii care erau cu Saul şi cu Ionatan nu avea o sabie sau o suliţă în mână. Numai Saul şi fiul său Ionatan aveau. Fapta de vitejie a lui Ionatan

23 A nd the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.

O unitate filisteană a înaintat şi s-a aşezat în trecătoare, la Micmaş.
