1 ¶ On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and it was found written therein that the Ammonites and the Moabites should not come into the congregation of God forever

În ziua aceea s-a citit în auzul poporului din Cartea lui Moise şi s-a găsit scris în ea că amonitului şi moabitului le este interzisă pe veci intrarea în adunarea lui Dumnezeu,

2 b ecause they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them; howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

deoarece nu i-au întâmpinat pe israeliţi cu pâine şi cu apă, ci l-au tocmit pe Balaam împotriva lor, ca să-i blesteme. Cu toate acestea, Dumnezeu a schimbat blestemul în binecuvântare.

3 N ow it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

Când au auzit ce spune Legea, i-au separat de ceilalţi pe toţi cei din Israel cu descendenţă amestecată. Reforma morală aprofundată

4 A nd before this, Eliashib, the priest, had been the overseer of the chamber of the house of our God, and was related to Tobiah,

Înainte de aceasta, preotul Eliaşib, care era responsabil cu cămările din Templul lui Dumnezeu şi rudă cu Tobia,

5 a nd he had prepared for him a great chamber, where before they had kept the present, the frankincense, the vessels, the tithe of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, to the singers and the porters and the offerings of the priests.

îi pregătise acestuia o încăpere mare, chiar acolo unde se obişnuia mai demult să se pună darurile de bunăvoie, tămâia, vasele, zeciuiala din grâne, din must şi din ulei care era rânduită leviţilor, cântăreţilor şi portarilor, precum şi contribuţia pentru preoţi.

6 B ut in all this time I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I went unto the king, and after certain days I was sent by the king.

Eu nu eram la Ierusalim când se întâmplau toate acestea, căci mă întorsesem la împărat în al treizeci şi doilea an de domnie al lui Artaxerxes, împăratul Babilonului. După o vreme i-am cerut împăratului învoire

7 A nd I came to Jerusalem and understood the evil that Eliashib had done attending Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

şi m-am întors la Ierusalim. Am descoperit atunci răul pe care-l făcuse Eliaşib, pregătindu-i lui Tobia o încăpere în curţile Templului lui Dumnezeu.

8 A nd it grieved me sore; therefore, I cast forth all the household vessels of Tobiah out of the chamber.

M-am supărat foarte tare şi am aruncat afară din încăpere toate lucrurile lui Tobia.

9 T hen I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers; and I caused the vessels of the house of God to be brought there again, with the present and the frankincense.

Am dat porunci să se cureţe încăperile şi am pus iarăşi acolo vasele de slujbă ale Templului lui Dumnezeu, darurile de bunăvoie şi tămâia.

10 ¶ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them and that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, had fled each one to his inheritance.

Am mai aflat că nu s-au mai dat părţile rânduite pentru leviţi, astfel încât leviţii şi cântăreţii care se ocupau de slujbă s-au întors fiecare la moşia lui.

11 T hen I contended with the rulers and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together and set them in their place.

I-am mustrat pe dregători, zicându-le: „De ce aţi părăsit Templul lui Dumnezeu?“ Apoi i-am adunat pe leviţi şi pe cântăreţi şi i-am pus din nou în slujbele lor.

12 T hen all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil unto the store houses.

Toţi cei din Iuda au început iarăşi să-şi aducă în magazii zeciuiala din grâne, din must şi din ulei.

13 A nd I made treasurers over the store houses, Shelemiah, the priest, and Zadok, the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan, the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.

I-am numit responsabili peste magazii pe preotul Şelemia, pe scribul Ţadok, pe levitul Pedaia, iar pe Zacur, fiul lui Matania, l-am pus ca ajutor al lor, căci ei erau recunoscuţi ca fiind oameni de încredere. Ei urmau să împartă rudelor lor bunurile din magazii.

14 R emember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my mercies that I have done for the house of my God and for its wards.

„Adu-Ţi aminte de mine, Dumnezeul meu, şi nu-mi uita faptele pe care le-am făcut pentru Templul lui Dumnezeu şi pentru rânduielile de acolo!“

15 ¶ In those days I saw in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath and bringing in sheaves and lading asses with wine, grapes, figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day; and I protested unto them the day in which they sold the food.

Tot în zilele acelea am văzut pe unii din Iuda călcând în teasc în ziua de Sabat şi pe alţii aducând snopi sau încărcând pe măgari burdufuri de vin, struguri, smochine şi tot felul de poveri, pentru a le aduce la Ierusalim în ziua de Sabat şi i-am mustrat chiar în ziua în care îşi vindeau mărfurile.

16 T here dwelt men of Tyre also therein, who brought fish and all manner of merchandise, and sold on the sabbath to the sons of Judah in Jerusalem.

Mai erau şi nişte tirieni care locuiau acolo şi care aduseseră peşte şi tot felul de mărfuri. Ei le vindeau la Ierusalim celor din Iuda, tot în ziua de Sabat.

17 T hen I contended with the nobles of Judah and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do and profane thus the sabbath day?

I-am mustrat pe nobilii lui Iuda, zicându-le: „Ce înseamnă această faptă rea pe care o faceţi, pângărind ziua de Sabat?

18 D id not your fathers do this, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us and upon this city? Yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

Oare nu aşa au făcut şi strămoşii voştri, de a adus Dumnezeul nostru asupra noastră şi asupra cetăţii acesteia tot acest necaz? Pângărind Sabatul nu faceţi decât să aduceţi mai multă mânie împotriva lui Israel!“

19 A nd it came to pass, that when shadow came to the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut and charged that they should not be opened until after the sabbath; and I set some of my servants at the gates, that no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

Apoi am poruncit ca, atunci când umbra cade asupra porţilor Ierusalimului, înainte de a începe Sabatul, să se închidă porţile. Am mai dat poruncă să nu se deschidă până după Sabat. Am pus la porţi pe unii dintre slujitorii mei, ca să nu permită intrarea poverilor în cetate în timpul zilei de Sabat.

20 S o the merchants and sellers of all kinds of merchandise lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice.

Negustorii şi vânzătorii de tot felul de mărfuri au înnoptat însă în afara Ierusalimului o dată, chiar de două ori.

21 T hen I testified and protested against them and said unto them, Why do ye lodge about the wall? If ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth they came no more on the sabbath.

I-am mustrat zicându-le: „De ce aţi înnoptat lângă zid? Dacă mai faceţi aşa, voi pune mâna pe voi!“ Şi de atunci nu au mai venit în ziua de Sabat.

22 A nd I told the Levites that they should cleanse themselves and that they should come and guard the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

Am poruncit leviţilor care se sfinţiseră să preia sarcina păzirii porţilor, să sfinţească ziua de Sabat. „Pentru toate acestea, adu-Ţi aminte de mine, Dumnezeul meu, şi îndură-te de mine, după marea Ta îndurare!“

23 ¶ In those days I also saw Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab;

Tot pe atunci am mai văzut că unii iudei se căsătoriseră cu femei aşdodite, amonite şi moabite.

24 a nd their sons spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and according to the language of each people; for they could not speak in the Jews’ language.

Jumătate din fiii lor vorbeau limba aşdodită şi nu ştiau să vorbească iudaica, ci doar limba unui popor sau altul.

25 A nd I contended with them and cursed them and smote certain of them and plucked off their hair and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

I-am mustrat, i-am blestemat, i-am pălmuit chiar pe unii dintre bărbaţi şi le-am smuls părul. I-am pus să jure pe Dumnezeu astfel: „Nu ne vom mărita fiicele cu fiii popoarelor şi nu ne vom căsători nici fiii, nici chiar noi înşine, cu fiicele lor!“

26 D id not Solomon, king of Israel, sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless, strange women caused even him to offend.

Apoi le-am spus: „Oare nu în felul acesta a păcătuit Solomon, regele lui Israel? Nu era nici un alt rege ca el între toate neamurile şi era iubit de Dumnezeu. Dumnezeu îl pusese rege peste tot Israelul, însă cu toate acestea şi pe el l-au atras în păcat femeile străine.

27 S hall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange women?

Şi acum trebuie să mai auzim şi despre voi că săvârşiţi acest mare rău şi că păcătuiţi împotriva Dumnezeului nostru, căsătorindu-vă cu femei străine?“

28 A nd one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore, I chased him from me.

Unul dintre urmaşii lui Ioiada, fiul marelui preot Eliaşib, era ginerele horonitului Sanbalat. Prin urmare, l-am izgonit de la mine.

29 R emember them, O my God because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.

„Adu-Ţi aminte de ei, Dumnezeul meu, pentru faptul că au întinat preoţia şi legământul preoţilor şi al leviţilor!“

30 T hus I cleansed them from all strangers and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, each one in his work,

I-am curăţit pe preoţi şi pe leviţi de orice străin şi i-am aşezat la datoriile lor, pe fiecare în slujba lui.

31 a nd for the wood offering, at the appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

Am mai făcut rânduială atât cu privire la lemnele aduse ca dar, la vremuri hotărâte, cât şi cu privire la primele roade. „Adu-Ţi aminte de mine, Dumnezeul meu, spre bine!“
