1 ¶ Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:

Popoare, ascultaţi lucrul acesta! Locuitori ai lumii, luaţi aminte,

2 B oth low and high, rich and poor, together.

slabi şi puternici, bogaţi şi săraci împreună!

3 M y mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart intelligence.

Gura mea va vorbi cu înţelepciune, iar gândurile inimii mele vor fi iscusite.

4 I will incline mine ear to a parable; I will declare my enigma upon the harp.

Îmi voi pleca urechea la proverbe, îmi voi începe ghicitoarea în sunet de liră.

5 W hy should I fear in the days of adversity when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

De ce să mă tem în zilele rele, când mă împresoară răutatea înşelătorilor mei,

6 ¶ Those that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

a celor ce se încred în averile lor şi se laudă cu mulţimea bogăţiilor lor?

7 n one of them can by any means ransom his brother, nor give God an atonement for him;

Nimeni nu poate răscumpăra viaţa semenului său, nici nu-I poate da lui Dumnezeu preţul răscumpărării lui.

8 ( for the redemption of their soul is of great price, and they shall never pay it)

Preţul răscumpărării pentru viaţa lui este atât de mare, încât nu va putea plăti niciodată,

9 t hat he should still live for ever and not see corruption.

ca să trăiască veşnic şi să nu vadă groapa.

10 F or he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others.

Se vede că şi înţelepţii mor, şi cel fără minte şi bruta pier împreună, părăsindu-şi averile în folosul altora.

11 T heir inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

Totuşi îşi imaginează că-şi vor stăpâni casele pe vecie şi că locuinţele lor vor dăinui din neam în neam; de aceea şi-au numit proprietăţile după înseşi numele lor.

12 N evertheless man will not abide forever in honour; he is like the beasts that are cut off.

Însă omul bogat nu dăinuie; el se aseamănă cu vitele pentru tăiere.

13 T his their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

Aceasta este soarta celor ce se încred în ei şi a celor ce-i urmează, care le încuviinţează vorbele.

14 L ike sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling.

Sunt sortiţi Locuinţei Morţilor ca nişte oi; moartea îi va paşte. Cei drepţi vor stăpâni peste ei dimineaţa. Chipul lor se va veşteji în Locuinţa Morţilor, departe de locuinţa lor.

15 ¶ Surely God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol when he shall take me. Selah.

Dar Dumnezeu îmi va răscumpăra sufletul din Locuinţa Morţilor, căci El mă va lua sub ocrotirea Lui. Sela

16 B e not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

Nu te îngrijora când se îmbogăţeşte cineva, când sporeşte bogăţia casei lui,

17 f or in his death he shall carry nothing away; nor shall his glory descend after him.

căci nu ia nimic cu el la moartea sa; bogăţia lui nu se coboară după el.

18 T hough while he lives, his life shall be blessed: and men will praise thee when thou art prosperous.

Chiar dacă sufletul lui a fost fericit în viaţă, chiar dacă s-a lăudat cu bucuriile de care şi-a făcut parte,

19 H e shall enter into the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light forever.

tot va merge la neamul părinţilor lui, care nu vor mai vedea lumina vreodată.

20 M an that is in honour that does not understand is like the beasts that are cut off.

Omul bogat şi fără pricepere se aseamănă cu vitele pentru tăiere.
