1 ¶ And when they were escaped, then we knew that the island was called Melita.

După ce am fost scăpaţi din primejdie, am aflat că insula se numea Malta.

2 A nd the barbarous people showed us no little kindness; for they kindled a great fire and received all of us because of the present rain and because of the cold.

Barbarii ne-au arătat o bunăvoinţă neobişnuită; au aprins un foc, din pricină că începuse să cadă ploaia şi din pricina frigului, şi ne-au primit alături de ei pe toţi.

3 A nd when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out of the heat and fastened on his hand.

Pavel a adunat o grămadă de mărăcini şi, în timp ce le punea pe foc, a ieşit o viperă din cauza căldurii şi i s-a prins de mână.

4 A nd when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet vengeance does not suffer him to live.

Când barbarii au văzut şarpele atârnând de mâna lui, şi-au zis unii altora: „Fără îndoială că omul acesta care a fost salvat din mare este un criminal, căci Dreptatea nu-l lasă să trăiască!“

5 A nd he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm.

Pavel însă a scuturat şarpele în foc, fără să sufere nici un rău.

6 B ut they were waiting to see when he should have swollen or fallen down dead suddenly; but after they had waited a great while and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Ei se aşteptau să se umfle sau să cadă deodată mort. Dar, după ce au aşteptat mult şi au văzut că nu i se întâmplă nimic neobişnuit, şi-au schimbat părerea şi au zis că este un zeu.

7 I n the same quarters were possessions of a principal man of the island, whose name was Publius, who received us and lodged us three days courteously.

Aproape de locul acela se aflau nişte ogoare ale fruntaşului insulei, pe care-l chema Publius. El ne-a primit şi ne-a găzduit cu ospitalitate timp de trei zile.

8 A nd it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of dysentery, to whom Paul entered in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him.

Tatăl lui Publius zăcea atunci în pat, suferind de friguri şi dizenterie. Pavel s-a dus la el, s-a rugat punându-şi mâinile peste el şi l-a vindecat.

9 S o when this was done, others also, who had diseases in the island, came and were healed,

După ce s-a întâmplat aceasta, ceilalţi de pe insulă care aveau boli, au venit şi ei şi au fost vindecaţi.

10 w ho also honoured us with many gifts; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

Ei ne-au cinstit în multe feluri, iar când am fost gata de plecare ne-au pus la dispoziţie lucrurile de care aveam nevoie. Pavel soseşte la Roma

11 ¶ And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose ensign was Castor and Pollux.

După trei luni, am plecat pe mare cu o corabie din Alexandria care iernase pe insulă şi care avea emblema Dioscurilor.

12 A nd landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.

Am debarcat în Siracuza, unde am rămas timp de trei zile,

13 A nd having gone around, we came to Rhegium, and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli,

iar de acolo am plecat mai departe şi am sosit în Regium. După o zi a început să bată un vânt dinspre sud, iar în ziua următoare am ajuns în Puteoli,

14 w here we found brethren, who asked us to tarry with them seven days, and so we went toward Rome.

unde am găsit fraţi şi am fost rugaţi să rămânem cu ei şapte zile. Şi aşa am ajuns în Roma.

15 A nd from there, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum and The Three Taverns whom when Paul saw, he thanked God and took courage.

Când fraţii de acolo au auzit despre noi, au venit în întâmpinarea noastră până la Forumul lui Apius şi până la „Trei taverne“. Văzându-i, Pavel I-a mulţumit lui Dumnezeu şi a fost încurajat.

16 A nd when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the praetorian prefect, but Paul was allowed to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

Când am intrat în Roma (, centurionul i-a predat pe prizonieri căpitanului gărzilor, iar) lui Pavel i s-a dat voie să locuiască singur, sub paza unui soldat. Pavel predică la Roma

17 ¶ And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the principals of the Jews together, and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,

După trei zile, Pavel i-a chemat la el pe fruntaşii iudeilor, iar când aceştia s-au adunat le-a zis: – Bărbaţi, fraţilor, deşi n-am făcut nimic împotriva poporului nostru sau împotriva obiceiurilor strămoşilor noştri, totuşi am fost luat prizonier în Ierusalim şi dat în mâinile romanilor.

18 w ho, when they had examined me, would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me.

Aceştia, după ce m-au interogat, voiau să mă elibereze, fiindcă nu era în mine nici o vină pentru care să merit moartea.

19 B ut when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar, not that I had anything to accuse my nation of.

Dar, pentru că iudeii s-au împotrivit, am fost constrâns să fac apel la Cezar, deşi nu aveam de adus nici o acuzaţie împotriva neamului meu.

20 F or this cause therefore I have called for you, to see you and to speak with you: because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

Din acest motiv v-am chemat să vă văd şi să vă vorbesc; căci din pricina nădejdii lui Israel port eu acest lanţ!

21 A nd they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came showed or spoke any harm of thee.

Ei i-au răspuns: – Noi n-am primit din Iudeea nici o scrisoare cu privire la tine şi nici unul dintre fraţii care au venit aici n-a anunţat sau n-a vorbit ceva rău despre tine.

22 B ut we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest; for as concerning this sect, we know that everywhere it is spoken against.

Dar am dori să auzim de la tine lucrurile pe care le gândeşti, căci, într-adevăr, ne este cunoscut faptul că pretutindeni se vorbeşte împotriva acestei partide.

23 ¶ And when they had appointed him a day, many came to him into his lodging, to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, procuring to persuade them of that concerning Jesus, the Christ, out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets, from morning until evening.

Aşadar, ei i-au stabilit lui Pavel o zi. Au venit mulţi în locul unde era găzduit, iar el, de dimineaţă până seara, le-a explicat lucrurile, depunând mărturie cu privire la Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu şi încercând să-i convingă cu privire la Isus, atât din Legea lui Moise, cât şi din Profeţi.

24 A nd some believed the things which were spoken, and some did not believe.

Unii erau convinşi de cele spuse de el, dar alţii erau necredincioşi.

25 A nd when they did not agree among themselves, they departed, after Paul had spoken this word, Well spoke the Holy Spirit by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers,

Fiindcă ei plecau acasă în neînţelegere unii cu alţii, Pavel le-a mai zis doar cuvintele acestea: „Bine a vorbit Duhul Sfânt, prin profetul Isaia, strămoşilor noştri,

26 s aying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see and not perceive;

când a zis: «Du-te la cei din poporul acesta şi spune-le: Veţi asculta întruna, dar nu veţi înţelege şi veţi privi mereu, dar nu veţi pricepe!

27 f or the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them.

Căci inima celor din acest popor s-a împietrit! Urechile lor aud greu şi ochii li s-au închis, ca nu cumva să vadă cu ochii, să audă cu urechile, să înţeleagă cu inima, să se întoarcă la Mine şi să-i vindec!»

28 B e it known, therefore, unto you that this saving health of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it.

Să ştiţi deci că mântuirea aceasta a lui Dumnezeu a fost trimisă neamurilor, şi ele o vor asculta!“

29 A nd when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves.

(Când Pavel a zis aceste cuvinte, iudeii au plecat, având o mare dispută între ei.)

30 ¶ And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him,

Pavel a rămas acolo doi ani întregi, într-un loc pe care şi-l închiriase. Şi-i primea pe toţi cei ce veneau la el,

31 p reaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all liberty, without hindrance.

predicând Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu şi dând învăţătură despre Domnul Isus Cristos, cu toată îndrăzneala şi fără nici o piedică.
