1 ¶ After these things, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what was decreed against her.

După toate acestea, când mânia împăratului Ahaşveroş s-a potolit, el şi-a amintit de Vaşti, de ceea ce făcuse ea şi de ceea ce se decretase împotriva ei.

2 T hen the king’s servants that ministered unto him said, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king,

Slujitorii apropiaţi împăratului i-au sugerat atunci: „Să se caute pentru împărat fecioare frumoase la înfăţişare.

3 a nd let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan, the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege, the king’s eunuch, keeper of the women; and let them be given that which is necessary for their purification;

Împăratul să numească responsabili în fiecare din provinciile împărăţiei ca să adune toate fecioarele frumoase la înfăţişare în citadela Susei, în harem, sub supravegherea lui Hegai, eunucul împăratului care supraveghează femeile şi le asigură lucrurile pentru înfrumuseţare.

4 a nd let the maiden which pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king, and he did so.

Tânăra care va plăcea împăratului, să împărăţească în locul lui Vaşti!“ Sfatul acesta i-a plăcut împăratului şi el a făcut întocmai.

5 N ow in Shushan, the palace, there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;

În citadela Susei trăia un evreu pe nume Mardoheu, fiul lui Iair, fiul lui Şimei, fiul lui Chiş, un bărbat din Beniamin,

6 w ho had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah, king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had carried away.

care fusese luat în captivitate din Ierusalim, printre exilaţii duşi împreună cu Ieconia, regele lui Iuda, de către Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului.

7 A nd he had brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter; for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; and as her father and mother were dead, Mordecai had taken her for his own daughter.

El îngrijea de Hadasa, adică Estera, fiica unchiului său, căci ea nu avea nici tată, nici mamă. Tânăra era frumoasă la chip şi plăcută la înfăţişare. După moartea tatălui şi a mamei acesteia, Mardoheu o înfiase.

8 S o it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan, the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king’s house to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

Când s-a auzit de porunca împăratului şi de decretul său, au fost strânse un mare număr de fete în citadela Susei, sub supravegherea lui Hegai. Estera a fost luată şi ea la palatul împăratului şi încredinţată lui Hegai, supraveghetorul femeilor.

9 A nd the maiden pleased him, and she found mercy before him; and he speedily gave her that which was necessary for purification and her rations, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her out of the king’s house; and he moved her and her maids into the best place of the house of the women.

Tânăra i-a plăcut lui Hegai şi a găsit bunăvoinţă înaintea lui, astfel că acesta s-a grăbit să-i aducă lucrurile pentru înfrumuseţare şi partea ei de hrană. Apoi i-a dat şapte slujnice, alese din palatul împăratului, şi a dus-o împreună cu slujnicele în cea mai bună încăpere a haremului.

10 E sther had not declared her people nor her birth, for Mordecai had charged her that she should not declare it.

Estera nu şi-a dezvăluit nici poporul şi nici originea, căci Mardoheu îi poruncise să nu le dezvăluie.

11 A nd Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women’s house to know the peace of Esther and what was done with her.

În fiecare zi Mardoheu se plimba prin faţa gardului haremului, ca să afle cum îi mergea Esterei şi ce se întâmplase cu ea.

12 N ow when each maid’s turn was come to go in to King Ahasuerus, after she had been twelve months according to the law regarding the women (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, that is, six months with oil of myrrh and six months with aromatic odours and oils for women),

Fiecărei tinere îi venea rândul să intre la împăratul Ahaşveroş, după ce timp de douăsprezece luni împlinea legea cu privire la femei, căci atât durau zilele de înfrumuseţare: timp de şase luni – ungeri cu ulei de smirnă, şi timp de încă şase luni – ungeri cu balsam şi alte lucruri femeieşti pentru înfrumuseţare.

13 t hen thus came each maiden unto the king; whatever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house.

Când o tânără intra la împărat, i se dădea voie să aducă cu ea în palatul împăratului ce dorea din harem.

14 I n the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s eunuch, who kept the concubines; she came in unto the king no more, unless the king delighted in her and called for her by name.

Seara intra la împărat, iar dimineaţa se întorcea în al doilea harem, cel de care răspundea Şaaşgaz, eunucul împăratului responsabil cu paza ţiitoarelor, şi nu se mai întorcea la împărat, decât dacă împăratul o plăcuse şi era chemată pe nume.

15 N ow when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail, the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai, the king’s eunuch, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained grace in the sight of all those that looked upon her.

Când a venit rândul Esterei, fiica lui Abihail, unchiul lui Mardoheu, cel care o înfiase, deci când i-a venit rândul să intre la împărat, ea nu a căutat să ia ceva din harem, în afară de ceea ce o sfătuise Hegai, eunucul împăratului responsabil cu paza haremului. Ea fusese bine văzută de toţi supraveghetorii ei.

16 S o Esther was taken unto King Ahasuerus into his royal house in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

Estera a fost luată la împăratul Ahaşveroş, în palat, în luna a zecea, adică în luna Tebet, în al şaptelea an al domniei sale.

17 A nd the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and mercy in his sight more than did all the other virgins so that he set the crown of the kingdom upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Împăratul a iubit-o pe Estera mai mult decât pe oricare dintre femeile care i-au fost aduse înainte, i-a arătat mai multă bunăvoinţă decât oricăreia dintre fecioare, i-a pus coroana împărătească pe cap şi a făcut-o împărăteasă în locul lui Vaşti.

18 T hen the king made a great banquet unto all his princes and his slaves, the banquet of Esther; and he made a release to the provinces of their taxes and gave gifts according to the power of the king.

Împăratul a dat apoi un ospăţ mare tuturor demnitarilor şi slujitorilor săi, un ospăţ în cinstea Esterei. A vestit zi de sărbătoare în provincii şi a dat daruri cu mână largă, demnă de un împărat. Complotul descoperit de Mardoheu

19 A nd when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king’s gate.

Când fecioarele au fost strânse laolaltă pentru a doua oară, Mardoheu stătea la poarta împăratului.

20 E sther had not yet declared her birth nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her; for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai as when she was being brought up with him.

După porunca lui Mardoheu, Estera nu-şi dezvăluise nici originea, nici poporul. Estera a făcut întocmai cum îi spusese Mardoheu, ca pe vremea când o educa el.

21 ¶ In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king’s gate, two of the king’s eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth and sought to lay hand on King Ahasuerus.

În zilele acelea, în timp ce Mardoheu stătea la poarta împăratului, Bigtana şi Tereş, doi dintre eunucii împăratului, păzitori ai porţii, s­au răzvrătit şi au încercat să ridice mâna împotriva împăratului Ahaşveroş.

22 A nd the thing was known by Mordecai, who told it unto Esther, the queen; and Esther notified the king of this in Mordecai’s name.

Mardoheu a aflat şi el de această uneltire şi a înştiinţat-o pe împărăteasa Estera. Estera i-a spus împăratului despre uneltire, în numele lui Mardoheu.

23 A nd when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore, they were both hanged on a tree; and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.

S-a cercetat despre uneltire şi s-a descoperit că totul era adevărat. Cei doi au fost spânzuraţi, iar întâmplarea s-a înscris în Cartea cronicilor, de faţă cu împăratul.
