1 ¶ Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.

I s-a spus lui David: – Filistenii luptă împotriva Cheilei şi îi pradă ariile.

2 T herefore David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go and smite the Philistines and save Keilah.

David L-a întrebat pe Domnul: – Să mă duc să lupt împotriva acestor filisteni? – Du-te, luptă împotriva filistenilor şi izbăveşte Cheila! i-a răspuns Domnul.

3 B ut David’s men said unto him, Behold, we are afraid here in Judah, how much more than if we go to Keilah against the army of the Philistines?

Dar oamenii lui David i-au zis acestuia: – Noi ne temem chiar şi aici, în Iuda, deci cu cât mai mult ne vom teme dacă vom merge la Cheila, împotriva oştirilor filistene?

4 T hen David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into thy hand.

Atunci David L-a întrebat din nou pe Domnul şi Domnul i-a răspuns: – Scoală-te şi mergi la Cheila, pentru că Eu îi dau pe filisteni în mâna ta.

5 S o David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

David a plecat la Cheila, împreună cu oamenii lui. A luptat împotriva filistenilor, le-a luat turmele şi le-a pricinuit mari pierderi. Astfel, David i-a izbăvit pe locuitorii Cheilei.

6 A nd it came to pass when Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, fled to David to Keilah that the ephod came in his hand.

Abiatar, fiul lui Ahimelek, adusese cu el şi efodul atunci când a fugit la David, la Cheila. David, urmărit de Saul

7 ¶ And it was told Saul how David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, God has delivered him into my hand, for he is shut in by entering into a town that has gates and bars.

Saul a fost înştiinţat că David a venit la Cheila. Atunci el a zis: „Dumnezeu l-a dat în mâna mea pentru că s-a închis, intrând într-o cetate cu porţi şi cu zăvoare.

8 A nd Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.

Saul a chemat tot poporul la război ca să meargă la Cheila şi să-l asedieze pe David şi pe oamenii săi.

9 B ut David understood that Saul devised evil against him, and he said to Abiathar, the priest, Bring here the ephod.

Însă David a aflat că Saul a întocmit planuri rele împotriva sa şi i-a zis preotului Abiatar: – Adu efodul aici!

10 T hen David said, O LORD God of Israel, thy slave has certainly heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.

Apoi David a zis: – Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Israel, robul Tău a auzit că Saul vrea să vină la Cheila pentru a distruge cetatea din cauza mea.

11 W ill the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? Will Saul come down as thy slave has heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy slave. And the LORD said, He will come down.

Mă vor preda, oare, locuitorii Cheilei în mâna lui? Va veni, oare, Saul după cum a auzit robul Tău? Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Te rog, răspunde-i robului Tău. – Va veni! i-a răspuns Domnul.

12 T hen David said, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.

David a continuat: – Mă vor da locuitorii Cheilei pe mine şi pe oamenii mei în mâna lui Saul? – Te vor da, i-a răspuns Domnul.

13 S o David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah and went from one place to another. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah, and he forbare to go forth.

Astfel, David şi oamenii lui, în număr de aproape şase sute de bărbaţi, au părăsit Cheila şi au plecat încotro au putut. Când Saul a fost înştiinţat că David a scăpat din Cheila nu s-a mai dus acolo.

14 ¶ And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand.

David a locuit în pustie, în fortificaţii; a locuit în regiunea muntoasă a pustiei Zif. Saul îl căuta în fiecare zi, însă Dumnezeu nu l-a dat în mâinile lui.

15 A nd David, seeing that Saul had come out to seek his soul, stayed in the woods in the wilderness of Ziph.

În timp ce se afla la Horeş, în pustia Zif, David a înţeles că Saul îl caută ca să-l omoare.

16 T hen Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God.

Ionatan, fiul lui Saul, s-a sculat şi s-a dus la David, la Horeş şi i-a întărit încrederea în Dumnezeu,

17 A nd he said unto him, Do not fear, for the hand of Saul, my father, shall not find thee, and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and even my father knows this.

zicându-i: – Nu te teme, pentru că mâna tatălui meu, Saul, nu te va găsi! Tu vei domni peste Israel, iar eu voi fi al doilea, după tine. Chiar şi tatăl meu, Saul, ştie că este aşa.

18 A nd the two made a covenant before the LORD, and David abode in the woods, and Jonathan returned to his house.

Apoi au încheiat amândoi un legământ înaintea Domnului. David a rămas la Horeş, iar Ionatan s-a întors acasă.

19 ¶ Then those of Ziph came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Does not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the woods in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the right hand side of the wilderness?

Zifiţii au venit la Saul, la Ghiva şi i-au zis: – Oare nu se ascunde David printre noi, în fortificaţiile de la Horeş, de pe dealul Hachila, care se află la sud de Ieşimon?

20 N ow, therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down, and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.

Acum, o, rege, vino, fiindcă aceasta este toată dorinţa sufletului tău, iar noi îl vom da în mâinile tale!

21 A nd Saul said, Blessed are ye of the LORD, for ye have compassion on me.

Saul le-a zis: – Fiţi binecuvântaţi de Domnul pentru că aţi avut milă de mine.

22 G o, I pray you, prepare yet and know and see his place where he places his foot and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he deals with great prudence.

Duceţi-vă, vă rog, să mai cercetaţi! Aflaţi şi vedeţi locul în care se află, precum şi cine l-a văzut acolo, pentru că mi s-a spus că este foarte şiret.

23 S ee, therefore, and take knowledge of all the hiding places where he hides himself and come again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you; and it shall come to pass, if he is in the land that I will search him out with all the thousands of Judah.

Cercetaţi, aflaţi toate locurile în care se ascunde şi întoarceţi-vă la mine cu ceva sigur. Atunci voi veni cu voi şi, dacă se află în ţară, îl voi căuta printre toate miile lui Iuda.

24 A nd they arose and went to Ziph before Saul, but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon in the plain on the right hand side of the wilderness.

Zifiţii s-au sculat şi au plecat la Zif, înaintea lui Saul. David şi oamenii lui se aflau în pustia Maon, în Araba, la sud de Ieşimon.

25 S aul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David, and he came down from there into a rock and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.

Saul a plecat împreună cu oamenii lui să-l caute, însă David a fost înştiinţat de acest lucru. A coborât la stâncă şi a rămas acolo, în pustia Maon. Când a auzit Saul lucrul acesta, l-a urmărit pe David în pustia Maon.

26 A nd Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David made haste to get away from the presence of Saul, for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.

Saul mergea pe o parte a muntelui, iar David cu oamenii lui pe cealaltă parte. David se grăbea să se depărteze de Saul, în timp ce acesta şi oamenii lui încercau să-i înconjoare pe David şi pe oamenii săi ca să-i prindă.

27 B ut there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Make haste and come, for the Philistines have invaded the land.

A venit însă un mesager la Saul ca să-i spună: „Grăbeşte-te să vii pentru că filistenii au invadat ţara!“

28 S aul returned, therefore, from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. For this reason they called that place Selahammahlekoth.

Atunci Saul s-a întors din urmărirea lui David şi a plecat împotriva filistenilor. Locul acela l-au numit Sela Hamahlekot.

29 A nd David went up from there and dwelt in strong holds at Engedi.

David a plecat de acolo şi a locuit în fortificaţiile din En-Ghedi.
