1 ¶ Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month, the sons of Israel were assembled with fasting and with sackcloth and earth upon them.

În a douăzeci şi patra zi a aceleiaşi luni, israeliţii, încinşi cu saci şi având ţărână pe cap, s-au strâns laolaltă pentru ţinerea unui post.

2 A nd the seed of Israel had separated themselves from all strangers and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.

Cei din neamul lui Israel s-au separat de toţi străinii şi, stând în picioare, şi-au mărturisit păcatele lor şi nelegiuirile strămoşilor lor.

3 A nd they stood up in their place and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed and worshipped the LORD their God.

S-au aşezat la locurile lor şi, timp de un sfert din zi, au citit din Cartea Legii Domnului, Dumnezeul lor. Apoi, într-un alt sfert din zi, şi-au mărturisit păcatele şi s-au închinat Domnului, Dumnezeul lor.

4 ¶ Then stood up upon the stairs of the Levites, Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.

Iosua, Bani, Kadmiel, Şebania, Buni, Şerebia, Bani şi Chenani s-au urcat pe estrada leviţilor şi au strigat cu glas tare către Domnul, Dumnezeul lor.

5 T hen the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever; and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

Leviţii Iosua, Kadmiel, Bani, Haşabnia, Şerebia, Hodia, Şebania şi Petahia au zis: „Ridicaţi-vă şi binecuvântaţi-L pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, Care este din veşnicie în veşnicie! Binecuvântat să-Ţi fie Numele cel slăvit, care este mai presus de orice binecuvântare şi laudă!

6 T hou, O LORD, art alone; thou hast made the heavens and the heavens of the heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things that are therein, the seas and all that is therein, and thou givest life to them all; and the host of the heavens worship thee.

Tu eşti Domnul şi în afară de Tine nu este un altul! Tu ai făcut cerurile şi cerurile cerurilor cu toată oştirea lor, pământul cu tot ce este pe el, mările cu tot ce este în ele; Tu le dai viaţă tuturor, iar oştirea cerurilor Ţi se închină.

7 T hou art, O LORD, the God who didst choose Abram and didst bring him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees and didst give him the name of Abraham

Tu eşti Domnul, Dumnezeul Care l-ai ales pe Avram, Care l-ai scos din Ur, din Caldeea, şi i-ai pus numele Avraam.

8 a nd didst find his heart faithful before thee and didst make a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it, to his seed and hast performed thy word; for thou art righteous.

Tu i-ai găsit inima credincioasă înaintea Ta şi ai încheiat un legământ cu el, promiţând că-i vei da ţara canaaniţilor, a hitiţilor, a amoriţilor, a periziţilor, a iebusiţilor, a ghirgaşiţilor, promiţând că o vei da seminţei lui; Ţi-ai împlinit promisiunea, căci Tu eşti drept.

9 A nd thou didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and didst hear their cry by the Red sea

Apoi ai văzut suferinţele strămoşilor noştri în Egipt, le-ai auzit strigătele de pe malul Mării Roşii.

10 a nd didst show signs and wonders upon Pharaoh and on all his slaves and on all the people of his land; for thou didst know that they had dealt proudly against them. So didst thou make thee a name, as it is this day.

Ai făcut semne şi minuni împotriva lui Faraon, împotriva tuturor slujitorilor săi şi împotriva întregului popor din ţara sa, căci ai luat cunoştinţă de mândria lor faţă de strămoşii noştri şi Ţi-ai făcut un Nume, cum se ştie astăzi.

11 A nd thou didst divide the sea before them so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou didst throw into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.

Ai despărţit marea înaintea lor şi ei au trecut prin mijlocul mării ca pe uscat; pe urmăritorii lor însă i-ai aruncat în adâncuri ca pe o piatră în ape adânci.

12 M oreover, thou didst lead them by day with a pillar of cloud and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light in the way by which they should go.

Apoi i-ai condus printr-un stâlp de nor ziua, şi printr-un stâlp de foc noaptea, ca să le luminezi calea pe care mergeau.

13 T hou didst come down upon Mount Sinai and didst speak with them from heaven and didst give them right judgments and true laws, good statutes and commandments,

Te-ai coborât pe muntele Sinai şi le-ai vorbit din ceruri. Le-ai dat reguli drepte, legi adevărate, orânduiri şi porunci bune.

14 a nd didst make known unto them the sabbath of thy holiness and didst prescribe for them commandments, statutes, and law by the hand of Moses, thy slave.

Le-ai făcut cunoscut Sabatul Tău cel sfânt şi le-ai dat porunci, orânduiri şi o Lege prin robul Tău Moise.

15 A nd thou didst give them bread from heaven in their hunger and didst bring forth water for them out of the rock in their thirst and didst promise them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.

Le-ai dat pâine din ceruri, atunci când le era foame, le-ai scos apă din stâncă, atunci când le era sete şi le-ai spus să vină să ia în stăpânire ţara pe care juraseşi că le-o vei da.

16 B ut they and our fathers dealt proudly and hardened their necks and did not hearken unto thy commandments

Însă ei, strămoşii noştri, s-au fălit, au fost încăpăţânaţi şi nu Ţi-au ascultat poruncile.

17 a nd refused to hear; neither did they remember thy wonders that thou hadst done among them, but hardened their necks and in their rebellion thought to appoint a leader to return to their bondage; but thou art a God of pardons, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great mercy, for thou didst not leave them.

Au refuzat să asculte şi nu şi-au amintit de lucrările Tale minunate, pe care le-ai înfăptuit printre ei. Au fost încăpăţânaţi şi în răzvrătirea lor şi-au numit o căpetenie, ca să se întoarcă în sclavia lor. Dar Tu eşti un Dumnezeu iertător, îndurător şi milostiv, încet la mânie şi plin de dragoste şi de aceea nu i-ai părăsit.

18 E ven when they had made themselves a molten calf and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had committed great abominations;

Chiar şi atunci când şi-au făcut un viţel turnat, zicând: «Acesta este Dumnezeul tău Care te-a scos din Egipt!» şi s-au făcut vinovaţi de multă blasfemie,

19 y et thou in thy manifold mercies didst not forsake them in the wilderness; the pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither did the pillar of fire by night, to illuminate the way in which they should go.

Tu, în marea Ta îndurare, nu i-ai părăsit în pustie. Stâlpul de nor n-a încetat să-i călăuzească ziua pe drum, iar stâlpul de foc n-a încetat să le dea lumină noaptea pe drumul pe care trebuiau să meargă.

20 T hou didst give thy good spirit to teach them and didst not withhold thy manna from their mouth and didst give them water for their thirst.

Le-ai dat chiar şi Duhul Tău cel bun ca să-i instruiască. Nu Ţi-ai retras mana de la gurile lor şi ai continuat să le dai apă ca să-şi potolească setea.

21 Y ea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness so that they lacked nothing; their clothes did not wax old, and their feet did not swell.

Timp de patruzeci de ani i-ai îngrijit în pustie şi nu au dus lipsă de nimic; hainele nu li s-au învechit, iar picioarele nu li s-au umflat.

22 T hou didst give them kingdoms and peoples and didst divide them into corners; so they possessed the land of Sihon and the land of the king of Heshbon and the land of Og, king of Bashan.

Le-ai dat în mână regate şi popoare, ale căror ţinuturi le-ai împărţit între ei. Astfel au moştenit ţara lui Sihon, adică ţara regelui din Heşbon, şi ţara lui Og, regele Başanului.

23 T hou didst multiply their sons as the stars of heaven and didst introduce them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to inherit it.

Le-ai înmulţit fiii ca stelele cerurilor şi i-ai adus în ţara în care le-ai spus părinţilor lor să intre ca s-o ia în stăpânire.

24 S o the sons came in and possessed the land, and thou didst humble the inhabitants of the land before them, the Canaanites, and didst give them into their hand, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

Fiii lor au intrat şi au luat în stăpânire ţara, iar Tu i-ai smerit înaintea lor pe locuitorii ţării, pe canaaniţi, şi ai dat în mâinile lor pe regii acestora şi popoarele ţării, ca să le faci pe plac.

25 A nd they took strong cities and fertile land and inherited houses full of all goods, hewn cisterns, vineyards and oliveyards and many trees of good fruit; so they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.

Au cucerit cetăţi fortificate, pământuri roditoare, au luat în stăpânire case, tot felul de bunuri, fântâni deja săpate, vii, măslini şi o mulţime de pomi fructiferi. Au mâncat, s-au săturat, s-au îngrăşat şi s-au desfătat datorită bunătăţii Tale celei mari.

26 N evertheless, they were contentious and rebelled against thee and cast thy law behind their backs and slew thy prophets who testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great abominations.

Dar apoi s-au arătat neascultători, s-au răzvrătit împotriva Ta, au aruncat înapoia lor Legea Ta, i-au ucis pe profeţii Tăi, care mărturiseau împotriva lor pentru a-i întoarce la Tine, şi s-au făcut astfel vinovaţi de multă blasfemie.

27 T herefore, thou didst deliver them into the hand of their enemies, who afflicted them; and in the time of their tribulation, they cried unto thee, thou didst hear them from the heavens; and according to thy manifold mercies thou didst give them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.

Atunci i-ai dat pe mâna duşmanilor lor, care i-au asuprit. Totuşi, în vremea necazului lor, ei au strigat către Tine, iar Tu i-ai auzit din ceruri. În marea Ta îndurare le-ai dat izbăvitori care i-au eliberat din mâna duşmanilor lor.

28 B ut after they had rest, they did evil again before thee; therefore, thou didst leave them in the hand of their enemies so that they had the dominion over them; yet when they returned and cried unto thee, thou didst hear them from the heavens; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies

Când au avut odihnă însă, ei au săvârşit iarăşi ce este rău înaintea Ta. Atunci iar i-ai lăsat pe mâna vrăjmaşilor lor care i-au stăpânit. Dar ei s-au întors şi au strigat din nou către Tine, iar Tu i-ai auzit din ceruri şi, în îndurarea Ta, i-ai izbăvit în numeroase rânduri.

29 a nd didst protest unto them, that they return unto thy law; yet they dealt proudly and did not hearken unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments (which if a man shall do, in them he shall live) and withdrew the shoulder and hardened their neck and would not hear.

I-ai avertizat să se întoarcă la Legea Ta, dar ei s-au îngâmfat, nu au ascultat de poruncile Tale şi au păcătuit împotriva hotărârilor Tale, deşi omul care le împlineşte va trăi prin ele. Şi-au întors spatele cu încăpăţânare, au fost îndărătnici şi nu au ascultat.

30 Y et many years didst thou forbear them and didst protest against them with thy spirit by the hand of thy prophets; yet they did not hear; therefore, thou didst give them into the hand of the peoples of the land.

I-ai îngăduit aşa mulţi ani, i-ai avertizat prin Duhul Tău, prin profeţii Tăi, dar ei tot nu au luat aminte, astfel că i-ai dat pe mâna popoarelor străine.

31 N evertheless, for thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.

Cu toate acestea, în marea Ta îndurare, nu i-ai nimicit, nici nu i-ai părăsit, căci Tu eşti un Dumnezeu milos şi îndurător!

32 N ow, therefore, our God, the great, mighty, and terrible God, who keeps covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that has come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, on our priests, on our prophets, on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.

Acum, Dumnezeul nostru, Dumnezeule cel Mare, Puternic şi Înfricoşător, Cel Care-Ţi păstrezi legământul şi îndurarea, nu privi ca puţin lucru toată suferinţa pe care am îndurat-o atât noi, cât şi regii noştri, conducătorii noştri, preoţii noştri, profeţii noştri şi strămoşii noştri, deci tot poporul Tău, de pe vremea împăraţilor Asiriei şi până acum!

33 H owbeit thou art just in all that has come upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly;

Cu privire la tot ce a venit peste noi, Tu ai fost drept, căci Tu ai lucrat cu credincioşie, dar noi am făcut ceea ce este rău!

34 n either have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, with which thou didst testify against them.

Regii, conducătorii, preoţii şi părinţii noştri nu au împlinit Legea Ta; nu au dat ascultare poruncilor şi înştiinţărilor Tale prin care i-ai prevenit.

35 F or they did not serve thee in their kingdom and in thy great goodness that thou didst give them and in the large and fat land which thou didst deliver before them; neither did they turn from their wicked works.

În regatul lor, în mijlocul multor bunătăţi primite de la Tine, în ţara cea întinsă şi bogată pe care le-o dăduseşi, ei nu Ţi-au slujit şi nu s-au întors de la faptele lor cele rele.

36 B ehold, we are slaves this day, behold us here, slaves in the land which thou didst give unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof.

Şi iată-ne astăzi sclavi în ţara pe care le-ai dat-o strămoşilor noştri, ca să-i mănânce roadele şi bunătăţile! Iată-ne sclavi chiar în ţara aceasta!

37 A nd it multiplies its fruit for the kings, whom thou hast set over us because of our sins, who have dominion over our bodies and over our cattle, according to their will, and we are in great distress.

Rodul ei îi îmbogăţeşte pe împăraţii pe care i-ai pus stăpâni peste noi din cauza păcatelor noastre. Ei stăpânesc după bunul lor plac asupra trupurilor noastre şi asupra vitelor noastre, iar noi ne aflăm într-un mare necaz.“ Poporul încheie o înţelegere

38 A nd because of all this, we make a sure covenant and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests seal unto it.

Cu privire la toate acestea, noi am încheiat în scris o înţelegere de neclintit, pe document punându-şi pecetea conducătorii, leviţii şi preoţii.
