1 A tunci Elifaz din Teman i-a zis:

¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered and said,

2 „ Poate un om să-i fie de folos lui Dumnezeu? Chiar cel mai înţelept Îi poate sluji la ceva?

Can a man be profitable unto God? For he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

3 C e bucurie are Cel Atotputernic dacă trăieşti drept? Ce câştigă El dacă sunt curate căile tale?

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that thou art justified? Or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect?

4 P entru evlavia ta te mustră El şi intră la judecată cu tine?

Will he reprove thee or will he enter with thee into judgment because he fears thee?

5 N u e mare răutatea ta? Nu sunt fără sfârşit nedreptăţile tale?

¶ Certainly thy wickedness is great and thine iniquities have no end.

6 N -ai luat tu garanţii de la fraţii tăi fără temei? Ai despuiat oameni de îmbrăcămintea lor.

For thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 N -ai dat apă celui însetat şi n-ai vrut să dai pâine celui flămând,

Thou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry.

8 d eşi erai un om puternic şi ţara era a ta, erai un om onorat; trăiai în ea.

But the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

9 T u ai trimis pe văduve cu mâinile goale şi ai zdrobit puterea celor orfani.

Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 D e aceea eşti înconjurat de curse şi eşti cuprins brusc de spaimă.

Therefore, snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubles thee

11 D e aceea e atât de întuneric, că nu poţi vedea şi te acoperă un şuvoi de ape.

or darkness, that thou canst not see, and abundance of waters cover thee.

12 N u este Dumnezeu în înălţimile cerului? Priveşte cât de măreţe sunt cele mai înalte stele!

Is not God in the height of the heavens? Behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

13 T otuşi tu zici: «Ce ştie Dumnezeu? Poate El judeca prin întunericul adânc?

And thou shalt say, What does God know? How can he judge through the darkness?

14 N ori groşi Îl înfăşoară şi astfel nu ne vede, atunci când El umblă pe bolta cerului.»

Thick clouds are his hiding place, and he does not see; and he walks in the circuit of heaven.

15 T e vei ţine de calea veche pe care au urmat-o cei răi?

¶ Dost thou desire to keep the old way which wicked men have trodden?

16 E i au fost smulşi înainte de vreme; temelia le-a fost spălată de un şuvoi de apă.

Who were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood.

17 E i I-au zis lui Dumnezeu: «Pleacă de la noi! Ce ne poate face Cel Atotputernic?»

Who said unto God, Depart from us; and what can the Almighty do unto us?

18 T otuşi El le-a umplut casele de bunătăţi. Dar departe de mine sfatul celor răi!

He had filled their houses with good things. Therefore, the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 C ei drepţi văd căderea lor şi se bucură şi cel nevinovat râde de ei, zicând:

The righteous shall see it and be glad; and the innocent laughs them to scorn.

20 « Duşmanii noştri sunt nimiciţi, focul le mistuie bogăţia!»

Whereas our substance was not cut down, when the fire had consumed the rest of them.

21 S upune-te Lui şi fă pace cu El şi aşa vei avea parte de bine.

¶ Make up thy friendship now with him, and thou shalt have peace; thereby good shall come unto thee.

22 P rimeşte învăţătura din gura Sa, aşterne-ţi în inimă cuvintele Lui.

Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

23 D acă te întorci la Cel Atotputernic, vei fi repus în drepturi; dacă izgoneşti răutatea departe de cortul tău,

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tent;

24 d acă vei arunca aurul în ţărână şi aurul de Ofir în albia pâraielor,

then thou shalt lay up gold as dust and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

25 d acă Cel Atotputernic va fi aurul tău şi argintul tău cel mai preţios,

And the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

26 a tunci te vei bucura în Cel Atotputernic şi-ţi vei ridica faţa spre Dumnezeu.

For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

27 T e vei ruga Lui şi El te va auzi şi tu îţi vei ţine jurămintele.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

28 C e vei hotărî se va împlini, lumina va străluci pe căile tale.

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

29 C ând oamenii sunt smeriţi Tu spui: «Să fie ridicaţi!» El va izbăvi pe cel cu privirea plecată.

When others are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

30 E l va elibera chiar şi pe cei vinovaţi; ei vor scăpa datorită curăţiei mâinilor tale.“

He shall deliver the island of the innocent; and in the pureness of thine hands thou shalt be kept.
