1 І заговорив теманянин Еліфаз та й сказав:

¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered and said,

2 Ч и для Бога людина корисна? Бо мудрий корисний самому собі!

Can a man be profitable unto God? For he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

3 Х іба Всемогутній бажає, щоб ти ніби праведним був? І що за користь Йому, як дороги свої ти вважаєш невинними сам?

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that thou art justified? Or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect?

4 Ч и Він буде карати, тебе боячись, і чи піде з тобою на суд?

Will he reprove thee or will he enter with thee into judgment because he fears thee?

5 Х іба твоє зло не велике? Таж твоїм беззаконням немає кінця!

¶ Certainly thy wickedness is great and thine iniquities have no end.

6 Т аж з братів своїх брав ти заставу даремно, а з нагого одежу стягав!

For thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 Н е поїв ти водою знеможеного, і від голодного стримував хліб...

Thou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry.

8 А сильна людина то їй оцей край, і почесний у ньому сидітиме.

But the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

9 Т и напорожньо вдів відсилав, і сирітські рамена гнобились,

Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 т ому пастки тебе оточили, і жахає тебе наглий страх,

Therefore, snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubles thee

11 т воє світло стемніло, нічого не бачиш, і велика вода закриває тебе...

or darkness, that thou canst not see, and abundance of waters cover thee.

12 Ч и ж Бог не високий, як небо? Та на зорі угору поглянь, які стали високі вони!

Is not God in the height of the heavens? Behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

13 А ти кажеш: Що відає Бог? Чи судитиме Він через млу?

And thou shalt say, What does God know? How can he judge through the darkness?

14 Х мари завіса Йому, й Він не бачить, і ходить по крузі небесному.

Thick clouds are his hiding place, and he does not see; and he walks in the circuit of heaven.

15 Ч и ти будеш триматись дороги відвічної, що нею ступали безбожні,

¶ Dost thou desire to keep the old way which wicked men have trodden?

16 щ о невчасно були вони згублені, що річка розлита, підвалина їх,

Who were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood.

17 щ о до Бога казали вони: Відступися від нас! та: Що зробить для нас Всемогутній?

Who said unto God, Depart from us; and what can the Almighty do unto us?

18 А Він доми їхні наповнив добром!... Але віддалилась від мене порада безбожних!

He had filled their houses with good things. Therefore, the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 С праведливі це бачать та тішаться, і насміхається з нього невинний:

The righteous shall see it and be glad; and the innocent laughs them to scorn.

20 С правді вигублений наш противник, а останок їх вижер огонь!

Whereas our substance was not cut down, when the fire had consumed the rest of them.

21 З априязнися із Ним, та й май спокій, цим прийде на тебе добро.

¶ Make up thy friendship now with him, and thou shalt have peace; thereby good shall come unto thee.

22 З акона візьми з Його уст, а слова Його в серце своє поклади.

Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

23 Я кщо вернешся до Всемогутнього, будеш збудований, і віддалиш беззаконня з наметів своїх.

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tent;

24 І викинь до пороху золото, і мов камінь з потоку офірське те золото,

then thou shalt lay up gold as dust and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

25 і буде тобі Всемогутній за золото та за срібло блискуче тобі!

And the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

26 Б о тоді Всемогутнього ти покохаєш і до Бога підіймеш обличчя своє,

For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

27 б удеш благати Його й Він почує тебе, і ти обітниці свої надолужиш.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

28 А що постановиш, то виповниться те тобі, й на дорогах твоїх буде сяяти світло.

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

29 Б о знижує Він спину пишного, хто ж смиренний, тому помагає.

When others are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

30 Р ятує Він і небезвинного, і той чистотою твоїх рук урятований буде.

He shall deliver the island of the innocent; and in the pureness of thine hands thou shalt be kept.
