1 І пішов Рехав'ам до Сихему, бо до Сихему зійшовся ввесь Ізраїль, щоб настановити його царем.

¶ And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come together in Shechem to make him king.

2 І сталося, як почув це Єровоам, Неватів син, він був в Єгипті, куди втік від царя Соломона, то вернувся Єровоам з Єгипту.

And when Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, heard it, who was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of Solomon, the king, Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

3 І послали й покликали його. І прийшов Єровоам та ввесь Ізраїль, і вони говорили до Рехав'ама, кажучи:

And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

4 Т вій батько вчинив був тяжким наше ярмо, а ти полегши жорстоку роботу батька свого та тяжке його ярмо, що наклав він був на нас, і ми будемо служити тобі.

Thy father made our yoke grievous; now, therefore, ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

5 А він відказав їм: Ідіть ще на три дні, і верніться до мене. І пішов той народ.

And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.

6 І радився цар Рехав'ам зо старшими, що стояли перед обличчям його батька Соломона, коли він був живий, говорячи: Як ви радите відповісти цьому народові?

Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon, his father, while he yet lived, saying, What do you counsel to reply to this people?

7 І вони говорили йому, кажучи: Якщо ти будеш добрим для цього народу, і зробиш за волею їх, і говоритимеш їм добрі слова, то вони будуть тобі рабами по всі дні.

And they spoke unto him, saying, If thou wilt seek the good of this people and please them and speak good words to them, they will be thy slaves for ever.

8 Т а він відкинув пораду старших, що радили йому, і радився з молодиками, що виросли разом із ним, що стояли перед ним.

But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.

9 І сказав він до них: Що ви радите, і що відповімо цьому народові, який говорив мені, кажучи: Полегши ярмо, яке твій батько наклав був на нас.

And he said unto them, What do you counsel us to reply to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?

10 І говорили з ним ті молодики, що виросли з ним, кажучи: Так скажеш тому народові, що промовляв до тебе, говорячи: Твій батько вчинив був тяжким наше ярмо, а ти дай полегшу нам. Отак скажеш до них: Мій мізинець грубший за стегна мого батька!

Then the young men that were brought up with him spoke unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spoke unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins.

11 А тепер: мій батько наклав був на вас тяжке ярмо, а я добавлю до вашого ярма! Батько мій карав вас бичами, а я битиму скорпіонами...

For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 І прийшов Єровоам та ввесь народ до Рехав'ама третього дня, як цар говорив, кажучи: Верніться до мене третього дня.

¶ So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had commanded, saying, Come again to me on the third day.

13 І цар жорстоко відповів їм. І відкинув цар Рехав'ам пораду старших,

And the king answered them roughly, for King Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men

14 і говорив до них за порадою тих молодиків, кажучи: Мій батько вчинив був тяжким ваше ярмо, а я добавлю до нього! Батько мій карав вас бичами, а я скорпіонами!...

and answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 І не послухався цар народу, бо це спричинене було від Бога, щоб справдити Господеві слово Своє, яке Він говорив був через шілонянина Ахійю, Неватового сина.

So the king did not hearken unto the people, for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spoke by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, unto Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.

16 І побачив увесь Ізраїль, що цар не послухався їх, і народ відповів цареві, кажучи: Яка нам частина в Давиді? І спадщини нема нам у сині Єссея! Усі до наметів своїх, о Ізраїлю! Познай тепер дім свій, Давиде! І пішов увесь Ізраїль до наметів своїх...

And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David or inheritance in the son of Jesse? Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now, David, see to thine own house! So all Israel went to their tents.

17 А Ізраїлеві сини, що сиділи в Юдиних містах, то над ними зацарював Рехав'ам.

But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah.

18 І послав цар Рехав'ам Гадорама, що був над даниною, та Ізраїлеві сини закидали його камінням, і він помер. А цар Рехав'ам поспішив сісти на колесницю та втекти до Єрусалиму...

Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the tribute and the sons of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. So King Rehoboam made speed to get into a chariot and fled to Jerusalem.

19 І відпав Ізраїль від Давидового дому, і так є аж до цього дня.

Thus Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
