1 І взяв Самуїл посудинку оливи, та й вилляв на його голову, і поцілував його та й сказав: Чи це не помазав тебе Господь над спадком Своїм на володаря? (І будеш ти царювати над народом Господнім, і ти визволиш його від руки ворогів його навколо. І ось тобі ознака, що Господь помазав тебе над спадком Своїм на володаря.)

¶ Then Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it upon his head and kissed him and said, Is it not because the LORD has anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

2 Я к підеш ти сьогодні від мене, то при Рахилинім гробі, у Веніяминовій країні в Целцаху, знайдеш двох людей, і вони скажуть тобі: Знайдені ті ослиці, яких ти шукати ходив. А оце батько твій занехаяв справи тих ослиць, та й зажурився за вас, говорячи: Що я зроблю для свого сина?

When thou art departed from me today, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel’s sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah, and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou didst go to seek are found, and thy father has left the care of the asses and sorrows for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

3 І перейдеш ти звідти й далі, і підеш аж до діброви Фаворської, а там знайдуть тебе три чоловіки, що йдуть до Бога до Бет-Елу, один несе трьох ягнят, а один несе три буханці хліба, а один несе бурдюка вина.

Then shalt thou go on forward from there, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and three men going up to God to Bethel shall meet thee, one carrying three kids and another carrying three loaves of bread and another carrying a bottle of wine.

4 І запитають вони тебе про мир, та дадуть тобі два хліби, і ти візьмеш із їхньої руки.

And they will salute thee and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

5 П отому вийдеш ти на Божий горбок, де намісники филистимські. І станеться, як ти ввійдеш там до міста, то стрінеш громаду пророків, що сходять з пагірка, а перед ними арфа, та бубон, та сопілка, та цитра, і вони пророкують.

After that thou shalt come to the hill of God where the garrison of the Philistines is, and it shall come to pass when thou art come there to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery and a tambourine and a pipe and a harp before them; and they shall prophesy.

6 І злине на тебе Дух Господній, і ти будеш з ними пророкувати, і станеш іншою людиною.

And the Spirit of the LORD will prosper thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them and shalt be turned into another man.

7 І станеться, коли збудуться тобі ці ознаки, роби собі, що знайде рука твоя, бо Бог з тобою.

And let it be when these signs are come unto thee that thou do according as thou shalt find at hand, for God is with thee.

8 І зійдеш ти передо мною до Ґілґалу, а я зійду до тебе, щоб принести цілопалення, щоб приносити мирні жертви. Сім день будеш чекати, аж поки прийду я до тебе, і завідомлю тебе, що будеш робити.

And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal, and, behold, I will come down unto thee to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings. Seven days shalt thou tarry until I come to thee and show thee what thou shalt do.

9 І сталося, як повернувся він, щоб іти від Самуїла, то Бог змінив йому серце на інше, а всі ті ознаки прийшли того дня.

¶ And it was so that when he had turned his shoulder to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart, and all those signs came to pass that day.

10 І прийшли вони туди до Ґів'ї, аж ось громада пророків назустріч йому. І злинув на нього Дух Божий, і він пророкував серед них.

And when they came there to the hill, behold, the company of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God prospered him, and he prophesied among them.

11 І сталося, кожен, хто знав його віддавна, а тепер побачили, ось він пророкує разом із пророками, то казали один до одного: Що то сталося Кішовому синові? Чи й Саул між пророками?

And it came to pass when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

12 І відповів чоловік звідти й сказав: А хто їній батько? Тому то стало за приказку: Чи й Саул між пророками?

And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore, it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

13 І перестав він пророкувати, і прийшов на пагірок.

And he ceased prophesying and came to the high place.

14 І сказав Саулів дядько до нього та до слуги його: Куди ви ходили? А той відказав: Шукати ослиць. І побачили ми, що нема, і прийшли до Самуїла.

And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, Where went ye? And he said, To seek the asses, and when we saw that they were nowhere, we came to Samuel.

15 А дядько Саулів сказав: Скажи ж мені, що сказав вам Самуїл?

And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.

16 І сказав Саул до дядька свого: Справді розповів нам, що знайдені ті ослиці. А про справу царства, що говорив Самуїл, не розповів йому.

And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he did not tell him.

17 І скликав Самуїл народ до Господа, до Міцпи,

¶ And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh

18 т а й сказав до Ізраїлевих синів: Так сказав Господь, Бог Ізраїлів: Я вивів Ізраїля з Єгипту, і спас вас із руки Єгипту та з руки всіх царств, що гнобили вас.

and said unto the sons of Israel, Thus hath the LORD God of Israel said, I brought up Israel out of Egypt and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all kingdoms and of those that oppressed you.

19 А ви сьогодні погордували своїм Богом, що Він спасає вас з усіх нещасть ваших та утисків ваших. І ви сказали йому: Ні, таки царя постав над нами. А тепер ставайте перед Господнім лицем за вашими племенами та за вашими тисячами.

But ye have this day rejected your God, who saves you out of all your afflictions and your troubles, and ye have said unto him, No, but set a king over us. Now, therefore, present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and by your thousands.

20 І привів Самуїл усі Ізраїлеві племена, і було виявлене Веніяминове плем'я.

And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

21 І привів він Веніяминове плем'я за родами його, і був виявлений рід Матріїв. І привів він рід Матріїв за їхніми мужчинами, і був виявлений Саул, син Кішів. І шукали його, та не знаходили.

When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their lineages, the family of Matri was taken, and from it Saul the son of Kish was taken, and when they sought him, he could not be found.

22 І питалися Господа ще: Чи прийде він ще сюди? А Господь відповів: Он він заховався між речами!

Therefore, they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come there. And the LORD answered, Behold, he has hid himself among the stuff.

23 І вони побігли, і взяли його звідти. І він став серед народу, і був вищий від усього народу на цілу голову.

And they ran and took him from there, and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

24 І сказав Самуїл до всього народу: Чи бачите, кого вибрав Господь? Бо нема такого, як він, серед усього народу. І ввесь народ ізняв крик та й сказав: Хай живе цар!

And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD has chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted and said, Long live the king.

25 А Самуїл промовляв до народу про права царства, і записав те до книги, та й поклав перед Господнім лицем. І відпустив Самуїл увесь народ, кожного до дому свого.

Then Samuel recited unto the people the rights of the kingdom and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his house.

26 І також Саул пішов до дому свого до Ґів'ї, а з ним пішли ті вояки, що Господь діткнувся їхніх сердець.

And Saul also went home to Gibeah, and there went with him some from the army, whose hearts God had touched.

27 А негідні сини говорили: Що, нас спасе отакий? І гордували ним, і не принесли йому дара. Та він мовчав.

But the sons of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him and brought him no presents. But he pretended not to notice.
