1 А коли Ездра молився та сповідався, плакав та припадав перед Божим домом, зібрався до нього з Ізраїля дуже великий збір, чоловіки, і жінки та діти, бо народ плакав ревним плачем...

¶ Now as Ezra prayed and confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children; and the people wept very sore.

2 І відповів Шеханія, Єхіїлів син, з Еламових синів, та й сказав до Ездри: Ми спроневірилися нашому Богові, бо взяли ми чужинок із народів цього краю за жінок. Але є ще надія для Ізраїля в цьому!

Then Shechaniah, the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have rebelled against our God and have taken strange women of the peoples of the land, but there is yet hope for Israel concerning this thing.

3 А тепер складімо заповіта нашому Богові, що випровадимо від себе всіх жінок та народжене від них, за радою пана нашого, та тих, хто тремтить перед заповіддю нашого Бога, і буде зроблене за Законом.

Now, therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to send away all the women and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of the Lord and of those that fear the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

4 У стань, бо на тобі ця річ, а ми з тобою. Будь мужній і дій!

Arise; for this matter belongs unto thee; we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.

5 І встав Ездра, і заприсяг зверхників, священиків і Левитів та всього Ізраїля, щоб робити за цим словом. І вони заприсягли.

Then Ezra arose and made the princes of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, swear that they should do according to this word. And they swore.

6 І Ездра встав з-перед Божого дому й пішов до кімнати Єгохонана, Ел'яшівового сина, і ночував там. Хліба він не їв і води не пив, бо був у жалобі за спроневірення поверненців.

¶ Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Johanan, the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he ate no bread, nor drank water; for he mourned because of the transgression of those that had been carried away.

7 І оголосили в Юдеї та в Єрусалимі до всіх поверненців, щоб зібратися до Єрусалиму.

And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the sons of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem

8 А кожен, хто не прийде до трьох день, за порадою зверхників та старших, увесь маєток того буде зроблений закляттям, а він буде вилучений із громади поверненців.

and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and of the elders, all his substance should be forfeited and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

9 І зібралися всі люди Юди та Веніямина до Єрусалиму до трьох день, це був дев'ятий місяць, двадцятого дня місяця. І сидів увесь народ на площі Божого дому, тремтячи від цієї справи та від дощу.

Thus were all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the plaza of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the rains.

10 І встав священик Ездра та й сказав до них: Ви спроневірилися, і взяли чужинних жінок, щоб побільшити Ізраїлеву провину.

And Ezra, the priest, stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed because ye have taken strange women, thus increasing the guiltiness of Israel.

11 А тепер повиніться Господеві, Богові ваших батьків, і чиніть Його волю! І віддаліться від народів цього Краю та від тих чужих жінок!

Now, therefore, make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers and do his will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the lands and from the strange women.

12 І відповіла вся громада, і сказали гучним голосом: Так, за словом твоїм, ми повинні зробити!

Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, Let it be done according to thy word.

13 А ле народ численний, і час дощів, і нема сили стояти на вулиці. Та й праці не на один день і не на два, бо ми багато нагрішили в цій справі.

But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and there is no strength to stand in the street; neither is this a work of one day or two; for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.

14 Н ехай же стануть наші зверхники за ввесь збір, а кожен, хто є в наших містах, хто взяв чужинних жінок, нехай прийде на означені часи, а з ними старші кожного міста та судді його, аж поки не відвернеться від нас жар гніву нашого Бога за цю річ.

Let our rulers of all the congregation now stand, and let all those who have taken strange women in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of each city and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter is turned from us.

15 О собливо стали над цим Йонатан, син Асагелів, та Яхзея, син Тіквин, а Мешуллам та Левит Шеббетай допомагали їм.

¶ Jonathan, the son of Asahel, and Jahaziah, the son of Tikvah, were placed over this matter; and Meshullam and Shabbethai, the Levites, helped them.

16 І зробили так поверненці. І відділив собі священик Ездра людей, голів батьків за родом їхніх батьків, і всі вони поіменно. І сіли вони першого дня десятого місяця, щоб дослідити цю справу.

And the sons of the captivity did so. And Ezra, the priest, and the men who were the heads of the fathers in the house of their fathers were separated, all of them by their names, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to inquire into the matter.

17 І скінчили до першого дня першого місяця справи про всіх тих людей, що взяли були чужинних жінок.

And they finished, with all the men that had taken strange women by the first day of the first month.

18 І знайшлися поміж священичими синами, що взяли чужинних жінок, із синів Єшуї, сина Йоцадакового, та братів його: Моасея, і Еліезер, і Ярів, і Ґедалія.

And among the sons of the priests that had taken strange women these were found: Of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and of his brethren: Maaseiah and Eliezer, and Jarib and Gedaliah.

19 І дали вони руку свою, що повипроваджують жінок своїх, а винні принесли в жертву барана з отари за провину свою.

And they gave their hands that they would send away their women; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their guiltiness.

20 А з синів Іммерових: Ханані та Зевадія.

And of the sons of Immer; Hanani and Zebadiah.

21 І з синів Харімових: Массея, і Елійя, і Шемая, і Єхіїл, і Уззійя.

And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 І з синів Пашхурових: Ел'йоенай, Маасея, Ізмаїл, Натанаїл, Йозавад та Ел'аса.

And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

23 А з Левитів: Йозавад, і Шім'ї, і Келая, він Келіта, Петахія, Юда та Еліезер.

And of the sons of the Levites; Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,)Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 А з співаків: Ел'яшів. А з придверних: Шаллум, і Телем, та Урі.

And of the singers; Eliashib; and of the porters; Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

25 А з Ізраїля, з синів Пар'ошових: Рам'я, і Їззійя, і Малкійя, і Мійямін, і Елеазар, і Малкійя та Беная.

Likewise of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, Jeziah, Malchiah, Miamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 А з синів Еламових: Маттанія, Захарій, і Єхіїл, і Авді, і Єремот, і Елійя.

And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Eliah.

27 І з синів Затту: Ел'йоенай, Ел'яшів, Маттанія, і Еремот, і Завад та Азіза.

And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza.

28 А з синів Беваєвих: Єгоханан, Хананія, Заббай, Атлай.

And of the sons of Bebai; Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai.

29 І з синів Банієвих: Мешуллам, Маллух, і Адая, Яшув, і Шеал та Рамот.

And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Ramoth.

30 І з синів Пахатових: Моав, Адна, і Хелал, Беная, Маасея, Маттанія, Веселіїл, і Біннуй та Манасія.

And of the sons of Pahath-moab; Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, Binnui, and Manasseh.

31 І з синів Харімових: Еліезер, Їшшійя, Малкійя, Шемая, Шімон,

And of the sons of Harim; Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,

32 В еніямин, Маллух, Шемарія.

Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah.

33 З синів Хашумових: Маттенай, Маттатта, Завад, Еліфелет, Єремай, Манасія, Шім'ї.

Of the sons of Hashum; Mattenai, Mattathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei.

34 З синів Банаєвих: Маадай, Амрам, і Уїл,

Of the sons of Bani; Maadai, Amram, and Uel,

35 Б еная, Бедея, Келугу,

Benaiah, Bedeiah, Chelluh,

36 В анія, Меремот, Ел'ятів,

Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib,

37 М аттанія, Маттенай, і Яасай,

Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasau,

38 і Бані, і Біннуй, Шім'ї,

Bani, Binnui, Shimei,

39 і Шелемія, і Натан, і Адая,

Shelemiah, Nathan, and Adaiah,

40 М ахнадвай, Шашай, Шарай,

Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai,

41 А заріїл, і Шелемія, Шемарія,

Azareel, Shelemiah, Shemariah,

42 Ш аллум, Амарія, Йосип.

Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph.

43 А з синів Нево: Єіїл, Маттітія, Завад, Зевіна, Яддай, і Йоїл, Беная.

And of the sons of Nebo; Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, Joel, and Benaiah.

44 У сі оці взяли були чужинних жінок, а деякі з цих жінок і дітей породили.

All these had taken strange women, and there were women of theirs who had given birth to sons.
