1 П ослухайте, діти, напучення батькового, і прислухайтеся, щоб навчитися розуму,

¶ Hearken, ye sons, unto the chastening of the father, and pay attention that ye might know understanding.

2 б о даю я вам добру науку: закона мого не кидайте,

For I give you good doctrine; do not forsake my law.

3 б о сином у батька свого я був, пещений й єдиний у неньки своєї.

For I was my father’s son, tender and unique in the sight of my mother.

4 І навчав він мене, і мені говорив: Нехай держиться серце твоє моїх слів, стережи мої заповіді та й живи!

He taught me and said unto me, Sustain thine heart with my words; keep my commandments, and live.

5 З добудь мудрість, здобудь собі розум, не забудь, і не цурайся слів моїх уст,

Get wisdom, get understanding; forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

6 н е кидай її й вона буде тебе стерегти! Кохай ти її й вона буде тебе пильнувати!

Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her, and she shall keep thee.

7 П очаток премудрости мудрість здобудь, а за ввесь свій маєток здобудь собі розуму!

Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

8 Т римай її високо і підійме тебе, ушанує тебе, як її ти пригорнеш:

Grow in wisdom, and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honour when thou hast embraced her.

9 в она дасть голові твоїй гарний вінок, пишну корону тобі подарує!

She shall give to thine head an increase of grace; a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

10 П ослухай, мій сину, й бери ти слова мої, і помножаться роки твойого життя,

Hear, O my son, and receive my words, and the years of thy life shall be multiplied.

11 д ороги премудрости вчу я тебе, стежками прямими проваджу тебе:

I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have caused thee to walk in right paths.

12 к оли підеш, то крок твій не буде тісний, а коли побіжиш не спіткнешся!

When thou goest in these paths, thy steps shall not be hindered; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

13 М іцно тримайся напучування, не лишай, його стережи, воно бо життя твоє!

Take fast hold of chastening; do not let go; keep this; for it is thy life.

14 Н а стежку безбожних не йди, і не ходи на дорогу лихих,

¶ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

15 п окинь ти її, не йди нею, усунься від неї й мини,

Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

16 б о вони не заснуть, якщо злого не вчинять, відійметься сон їм, як не зроблять кому, щоб спіткнувся!...

For they do not sleep, unless they have done evil; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause someone to fall.

17 Б о вони хліб безбожжя їдять, і вино грабежу попивають.

For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

18 А путь праведних ніби те світло ясне, що світить все більше та більш аж до повного дня!

But the path of the just is as the light of the morning star, that shines more and more until the day is perfect.

19 Д орога ж безбожних як темність: не знають, об що спотикнуться...

The way of the wicked is as darkness; they do not know in what they stumble.

20 М ій сину, прислухуйся до моїх слів, до речей моїх ухо своє нахили!

¶ My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my words.

21 Н ехай не відійдуть вони від очей твоїх, бережи їх в середині серця свого!

Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

22 Б о життя вони тим, хто їх знайде, а для тіла усього його лікування.

For they are life unto those that find them and medicine to all their flesh.

23 Н ад усе, що лише стережеться, серце своє стережи, бо з нього походить життя.

Above all else, guard thy heart; for out of it flows the issues of life.

24 В ідкинь ти від себе лукавство уст, віддали ти від себе крутійство губ.

Put away from thee the perversion of the mouth, and the deviation of the lips put far from thee.

25 Н ехай дивляться очі твої уперед, а повіки твої нехай перед тобою простують.

Let thine eyes look upon that which is right, and let thine eyelids straighten thy path before thee.

26 С тежку ніг своїх вирівняй, і стануть міцні всі дороги твої:

Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

27 н е вступайся ні вправо, ні вліво, усунь свою ногу від зла!

Turn not to the right hand nor to the left; remove thy foot from evil.
