1 А Авраам був старий, у літа ввійшов. І Господь Авраама поблагословив був усім.

¶ And Abraham was old and well stricken in age, and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.

2 І сказав Авраам до свого раба, найстаршого дому свого, що рядив над усім, що він мав: Поклади свою руку під стегно моє,

And Abraham said unto his eldest slave of his house, who ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh,

3 і я заприсягну тебе Господом, Богом неба й Богом землі, що ти не візьмеш жінки для сина мого з-посеред дочок ханаанеянина, серед якого я пробуваю.

and I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of the heavens and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

4 Б о ти підеш до краю мого, і до місця мого народження, і візьмеш жінку для сина мого, для Ісака.

but thou shalt go unto my country and to my kindred and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

5 І сказав раб до нього: Може та жінка не схоче за мною піти до цієї землі, то чи справді поверну я твого сина до краю, звідки ти вийшов?

And the slave said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land, must I therefore bring thy son again unto the land from which thou didst come?

6 І промовив до нього Авраам: Стережися, щоб ти не вернув мого сина туди!

And Abraham said unto him, Beware that thou not bring my son there again.

7 Г осподь, що взяв мене з дому батька мого й з краю мого народження, і що промовляв був до мене, і що присягнув мені, кажучи: Твоїм нащадкам Я дам оцю землю, Він пошле Свого Ангола перед обличчям твоїм, і ти візьмеш звідти жінку для сина мого!

The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred and who spoke unto me and swore unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from there.

8 А коли ота жінка не схоче піти за тобою, то ти будеш очищений з цієї присяги своєї. Тільки сина мого ти туди не вертай.

And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be free from this my oath; only do not bring my son there again.

9 І раб поклав свою руку під стегно Авраама, пана свого, і йому присягнув на цю справу.

Then the slave put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning that matter.

10 І взяв той раб десять верблюдів із верблюдів пана свого, та й пішов. І взяв різне добро свого пана в руку свою. І він устав, і пішов в Месопотамію до міста Нахора.

¶ And the slave took ten camels of the camels of his master and departed with the best of what his master had in his hand; and he arose and went to Ara-naharaim, unto the city of Nahor.

11 І поставив верблюди навколішки за містом при водній криниці надвечір, на час, як виходять жінки воду брати,

And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.

12 т а й промовив: Господи, Боже пана мого Авраама, подай же сьогодні мені це, і милість вчини з паном моїм Авраамом!

And he said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, to have a good encounter this day and show mercy unto my master Abraham.

13 О сь я стою над водним джерелом, а дочки мешканців міста виходять воду брати.

Behold, I stand here by the fountain of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out for water:

14 І станеться, що дівчина, до якої скажу: Нахили но глека свого, я нап'юся, а вона відповість: Пий, і так само верблюди твої я понапуваю, її Ти призначив для раба Свого, для Ісака. І з цього пізнаю, що Ти милість учинив з моїм паном.

And let it come to pass that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels to drink also; let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy slave Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shown mercy unto my master.

15 І сталося, поки він закінчив говорити, аж ось виходить Ревека, що була народжена Бетуїлові, синові Мілки, жінки Нахора, Авраамового брата. А її глек на плечі в неї.

And it came to pass before he had done speaking that, behold, Rebekah came out (who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother) with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

16 А дівчина та вельми вродлива з обличчя; була дівиця, і чоловік не пізнав ще її. І зійшла вона до джерела, і наповнила глека свого, та й вийшла.

And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, whom no man had known; and she went down to the fountain and filled her pitcher and was coming back up.

17 І вибіг той раб назустріч їй, та й сказав: Дай но напитись води з твого глека!

Then the slave ran to meet her and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.

18 А та відказала: Напийся, мій пане! І вона поспішила, і зняла свого глека на руку свою, і напоїла його.

And she said, Drink, my lord, and she hastened to let down her pitcher upon her hand and gave him drink.

19 А коли закінчила поїти його, то сказала: Також для верблюдів твоїх наберу я води, аж поки вони не нап'ються.

And when she had finished giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also until they have finished drinking.

20 І метнулась вона, і глека свого спорожнила до пійла. І ще до криниці побігла набрати, і набрала води всім верблюдам його.

And she hastened and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water and drew for all his camels.

21 А чоловік той дивувався їй та мовчав, щоб пізнати, чи Господь пощастив дорогу йому, чи ні?

And the man marveled at her in silence, to see whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not.

22 І сталося, як перестали верблюди пити, то взяв той чоловік золоту сережку, пів шекля вага їй, і два наручні на руки її, на десять шеклів золота вага їм,

And it came to pass as the camels had finished drinking that the man took a golden pendant of half a shekel weight and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold

23 т а й сказав: Чия ти дочка? Скажи ж мені, чи в домі батька твойого є місце для нас ночувати?

and said, Whose daughter art thou? Tell me, I pray thee; is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in?

24 В она відказала йому: Я дочка Бетуїла, сина Мілки, що його породила вона для Нахора.

And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she gave birth unto Nahor.

25 І сказала до нього: І соломи, і паші багато є в нас, також місце ночувати.

She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and fodder enough and room to lodge in.

26 І той чоловік нахилився, і вклонився Богові аж до землі,

Then the man bowed down his head and worshipped the LORD.

27 т а й сказав: Благословенний Господь, Бог пана мого Авраама, що не опустив милости Своєї й вірности Своєї від пана мого! Я був у дорозі, Господь припровадив мене до дому братів мого пана.

And he said, Blessed be the LORD, God of my master Abraham, who has not lifted his mercy and his truth from my master, the LORD leading me in the way to the house of my master’s brethren.

28 І побігла дівчина, і розповіла в домі своєї матері про цю пригоду.

And the damsel ran and told those of her mother’s house these things.

29 А в Ревеки був брат, на ймення йому Лаван. І побіг Лаван до того чоловіка надвір, до джерела.

¶ And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban; and Laban ran out unto the man to the fountain.

30 І сталося, як він побачив сережку та наручні на руках сестри своєї, і коли почув слова Ревеки, сестри своєї, що говорила: Отак говорив мені той чоловік, то прибув він до того чоловіка, а той ось стоїть при верблюдах біля джерела,

And it came to pass when he saw the pendant and the bracelets upon his sister’s hands, she said, Thus spoke the man unto me; then he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the fountain.

31 і сказав: Увійди, благословенний Господа! Чого стоятимеш надворі? А я опорожнив дім і місце для верблюдів.

And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; why dost thou stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and the place for the camels.

32 І ввійшов той чоловік до дому. А Лаван порозсідлував верблюди, і дав соломи й паші для верблюдів, і води, щоб умити ноги йому й ноги людям, що були з ним.

Then the man came into the house, and Laban ungirded his camels and gave straw and fodder for the camels and water to wash his feet and the men’s feet that were with him.

33 І поставлено перед ним, щоб він їв. А той відказав: Не буду їсти, аж поки не розкажу своєї справи. А Лаван відказав: Говори!

And they set food before him to eat, but he said, I will not eat until I have told my errand. And he said unto him, Speak on.

34 І той став говорити: Я раб Авраамів.

And he said, I am Abraham’s slave.

35 А Господь щедро поблагословив мого пана, і він став великий. І дав Він йому худобу дрібну та велику, і срібло, і золото, і рабів, і невільниць, і верблюди, й осли.

And the LORD has blessed my master greatly, and he is become great; and he has given him flocks and herds and silver and gold and menslaves and maidslaves and camels and asses.

36 А Сарра, жінка пана мого, бувши старою, уродила панові моєму сина. А він йому все дав, що мав.

And Sarah, my master’s wife, bore a son to my master when she was old, unto whom he has given all that he has.

37 І заприсяг мене пан мій, говорячи: Не візьмеш жінки для сина мого з-посеред дочок ханаанеянина, що я пробуваю в його краю.

And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;

38 А ле підеш до дому батька мого, і до мого роду, і візьмеш жінку для сина мого.

but thou shalt go unto my father’s house and to my kindred and take from there a wife for my son.

39 І сказав я до пана свого: Може та жінка не піде за мною?

And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me.

40 І сказав він до мене: Господь, що ходив перед обличчям моїм, пошле Свого Ангола з тобою, і дорогу твою пощастить, і ти візьмеш жінку для сина мого з роду мого й з дому батька мого.

And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my lineage and of my father’s house;

41 Т оді будеш очищений ти від закляття мого, як прийдеш до роду мого, а коли вони не дадуть тобі, то будеш ти чистий від закляття мого.

then shalt thou be free from this my oath, when thou hast come unto my lineage; and if they give her not unto thee, thou shalt be free from my oath.

42 І прибув я сьогодні до джерела, та й сказав: Господи, Боже пана мого Авраама, коли б же Ти вчинив щасливою дорогу мою, що нею ходжу я!

And I came this day unto the fountain and said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if now thou dost prosper my way by which I go,

43 О сь я стою над джерелом води, і станеться, що дівчина, яка вийде води брати, а я їй скажу: Дай но мені напитися трохи води з свого глека,

behold, I stand by the fountain of water; let it come to pass, therefore, that the virgin who comes forth to draw water unto whom I say, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;

44 в она ж відкаже мені: Пий і ти, і для верблюдів твоїх наберу я води, то вона та жінка, яку призначив Господь для сина пана мого.

and if she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels, let the same be the woman whom the LORD has prepared for my master’s son.

45 І поки скінчив я говорити в своїм серці, аж ось виходить Ревека, а її глек на плечі в неї. І зійшла вона до джерела, та й набрала води. І сказав я до неї: Напій же мене!

And before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder, and she went down unto the fountain and drew water, and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.

46 І метнулась вона, і свого глека з себе зняла та й сказала: Пий, а я понапуваю й верблюди твої. І я пив, а вона понапувала й ті верблюди.

And she made haste and let down her pitcher from her shoulder and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also; so I drank, and she gave to drink unto the camels also.

47 А я запитався її та й сказав: Чия ти дочка? А вона відказала: Я дочка Бетуїла, сина Нахорового, якого породила йому Мілка. І сережку надів я до носа її, і наручні на руки її.

And I asked her and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore unto him. Then I put the pendant over her nose and the bracelets upon her hands.

48 І я нахилився, і вклонився до землі Господеві, і поблагословив Господа, Бога пана мого Авраама, що Він провадив мене дорогою визначеною, щоб узяти дочку брата пана мого для сина його.

And I bowed down my head and worshipped the LORD and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of the truth to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son.

49 А тепер, якщо милосердя та правду ви чините з паном моїм, то скажіть мені; коли ж ні, то скажіть мені, і я звернуся праворуч або ліворуч.

And now if ye will deal in mercy and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.

50 І відповіли Лаван і Бетуїл та й сказали: Від Господа вийшла та річ, ми не можем сказати тобі нічого злого чи доброго.

Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceeds from the LORD; we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.

51 О сь перед тобою Ревека, візьми та й іди, і нехай вона стане за жінку синові пана твого, як Господь говорив був.

Behold, Rebekah is before thee; take her and go and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD has spoken.

52 І сталося, коли їхні слова почув раб Авраамів, то вклонивсь до землі Господеві.

And it came to pass that when Abraham’s slave heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.

53 І вийняв той раб срібний посуд, і посуд золотий та шати, і дав Ревеці, і дав цінні речі братові її та матері її.

And the slave brought forth vessels of silver and vessels of gold and raiment and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.

54 І їли й пили він та люди, що з ним, і ночували. А коли рано встали, то він сказав: Відішліть мене до пана мого.

¶ And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and slept; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.

55 І сказав її брат та мати її: Нехай посидить дівчина з нами хоч днів з десять, потім підеш.

Then her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.

56 І сказав він до них: Не спізняйте мене, бо Господь пощастив мою путь. Відішліть мене, і нехай я піду до пана свого.

And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD has prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.

57 А вони відказали: Покличмо дівчину, і запитаймо її саму.

Then they said, We will call the damsel and enquire at her mouth.

58 І покликали Ревеку, і сказали до неї: Чи ти підеш з оцим чоловіком? А вона відказала: Піду.

And they called Rebekah and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.

59 І послали вони Ревеку, сестру свою, і няньку її, і раба Авраамового, і людей його.

So they sent away Rebekah, their sister, and her nurse and Abraham’s slave and his men.

60 І вони поблагословили Ревеку й сказали до неї: Ти наша сестра, будь матір'ю для тисячі десятків тисяч, і нехай нащадки твої внаслідують брами твоїх ворогів.

And they blessed Rebekah and said unto her, Thou art our sister; be thou the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let thy seed possess the gate of those who hate them.

61 І встала Ревека й служниці її, і посідали на верблюдів, і поїхала за тим чоловіком. І взяв раб Ревеку й відійшов.

And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels and followed the man; and the slave took Rebekah and went away.

62 А Ісак був вернувся з подорожі до криниці Лахай-Рої, і сидів у краї південному.

¶ And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the land of the Negev.

63 І вийшов Ісак на прогулянку в поле, як вечір наставав. І він звів свої очі, і побачив, ось верблюди йдуть.

And Isaac had gone out to pray in the field at the evening hour; and he lifted up his eyes and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.

64 І Ревека звела свої очі, та й Ісака побачила, і злізла з верблюда.

And Rebekah also lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.

65 І сказала вона до раба: Хто отой чоловік, що полем іде нам назустріч? А раб відповів: То мій пан. І вона покривало взяла, та й накрилась.

For she had asked the slave, What man is this that walks in the field to meet us? And the slave had said, This is my master; therefore she took a veil and covered herself.

66 І раб розповів Ісакові про всі речі, які він учинив.

Then the slave told Isaac all the things that he had done.

67 І впровадив її Ісак до намету Сарри, матері своєї. І взяв він Ревеку, і за жінку йому вона стала, і він її покохав. І Ісак був утішений по смерті матері своєї.

And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent and took Rebekah as his wife; and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
