1 M entre Esdra pregava e faceva questa confessione piangendo e prostrato davanti alla casa di Dio, si radunò intorno a lui una grandissima folla di Israeliti, uomini, donne e bambini; e il popolo piangeva a dirotto.

¶ Now as Ezra prayed and confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children; and the people wept very sore.

2 A llora Secania, figlio di Ieiel, uno dei figli di Elam, disse a Esdra: «Noi siamo stati infedeli al nostro Dio, sposando donne straniere prese dai popoli di questo paese. Tuttavia rimane ancora, a questo riguardo, una speranza a Israele.

Then Shechaniah, the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have rebelled against our God and have taken strange women of the peoples of the land, but there is yet hope for Israel concerning this thing.

3 F acciamo un patto con il nostro Dio e impegniamoci a rimandare tutte queste donne e i figli nati da loro, come consigliano il mio signore e quelli che tremano davanti ai comandamenti del nostro Dio: si faccia quello che vuole la legge.

Now, therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to send away all the women and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of the Lord and of those that fear the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

4 À lzati, perché questo è compito tuo, e noi saremo con te. Fatti coraggio e agisci!»

Arise; for this matter belongs unto thee; we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.

5 A llora Esdra si alzò, fece giurare ai capi dei sacerdoti, dei Leviti e di tutto Israele che avrebbero fatto come era stato detto. E quelli giurarono.

Then Ezra arose and made the princes of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, swear that they should do according to this word. And they swore.

6 C osì Esdra si alzò davanti alla casa di Dio e andò nella camera di Iocanan, figlio di Eliasib; e dopo esserci entrato, non mangiò pane né bevve acqua, perché faceva cordoglio per l’infedeltà di quelli che erano stati in esilio.

¶ Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Johanan, the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he ate no bread, nor drank water; for he mourned because of the transgression of those that had been carried away.

7 S i proclamò in Giuda e a Gerusalemme che tutti i reduci dall’esilio si radunassero a Gerusalemme;

And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the sons of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem

8 e che chiunque non fosse venuto entro tre giorni, seguendo il consiglio dei capi e degli anziani, tutti i suoi beni gli sarebbero stati confiscati, ed egli stesso sarebbe stato escluso dalla comunità dei reduci dall’esilio.

and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and of the elders, all his substance should be forfeited and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

9 C osì tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Beniamino si radunarono a Gerusalemme entro i tre giorni. Era il ventesimo giorno del nono mese. Tutto il popolo stava sulla piazza della casa di Dio, tremante a causa di questo fatto e della gran pioggia.

Thus were all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the plaza of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the rains.

10 I l sacerdote Esdra si alzò e disse loro: «Voi avete commesso un’infedeltà, sposando donne straniere, e avete reso Israele ancora più colpevole.

And Ezra, the priest, stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed because ye have taken strange women, thus increasing the guiltiness of Israel.

11 M a ora confessate la vostra colpa al Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, e fate la sua volontà! Separatevi dai popoli di questo paese e dalle donne straniere!»

Now, therefore, make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers and do his will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the lands and from the strange women.

12 A llora tutta l’assemblea rispose e disse ad alta voce: «Sì, dobbiamo fare come tu hai detto!

Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, Let it be done according to thy word.

13 M a il popolo è molto numeroso, piove molto e non possiamo stare allo scoperto; e questa non è faccenda di un giorno o due, poiché siamo stati in molti a commettere questo peccato.

But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and there is no strength to stand in the street; neither is this a work of one day or two; for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.

14 R imangano dunque qui i capi di tutta l’assemblea; e tutti quelli che, nelle nostre città, hanno sposato donne straniere vengano nei tempi stabiliti, con gli anziani e con i giudici di ogni città, finché non sia allontanata da noi l’ardente ira del nostro Dio per questa infedeltà».

Let our rulers of all the congregation now stand, and let all those who have taken strange women in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of each city and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter is turned from us.

15 I onatan, figlio di Asael, e Iazia, figlio di Ticva, appoggiati da Mesullam e dal Levita Sabtai, furono i soli a opporsi a questo;

¶ Jonathan, the son of Asahel, and Jahaziah, the son of Tikvah, were placed over this matter; and Meshullam and Shabbethai, the Levites, helped them.

16 m a i reduci dall’esilio fecero a quel modo. Furono scelti il sacerdote Esdra e alcuni capi famiglia, secondo le loro case patriarcali, tutti designati per nome, i quali cominciarono a riunirsi il primo giorno del decimo mese, per esaminare i fatti.

And the sons of the captivity did so. And Ezra, the priest, and the men who were the heads of the fathers in the house of their fathers were separated, all of them by their names, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to inquire into the matter.

17 I l primo giorno del primo mese avevano finito di occuparsi di quanti avevano sposato donne straniere.

And they finished, with all the men that had taken strange women by the first day of the first month.

18 T ra i figli dei sacerdoti, che avevano sposato donne straniere, si trovarono dei figli di Iesua, figlio di Iosadac, e tra i suoi fratelli: Maaseia, Eliezer, Iarib e Ghedalia.

And among the sons of the priests that had taken strange women these were found: Of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and of his brethren: Maaseiah and Eliezer, and Jarib and Gedaliah.

19 E ssi promisero, dando la mano, di mandar via le loro mogli, e offrirono un montone come sacrificio per la loro colpa.

And they gave their hands that they would send away their women; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their guiltiness.

20 D ei figli di Immer: Canani e Zebadia.

And of the sons of Immer; Hanani and Zebadiah.

21 D ei figli di Carim: Maaseia, Elia, Semaia, Ieiel e Uzzia.

And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 D ei figli di Pasur: Elioenai, Maaseia, Ismael, Netaneel, Iozabad, Elasa.

And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

23 D ei Leviti: Iozabad, Simei, Chelaia, detto anche Chelita, Petaia, Giuda ed Eliezer.

And of the sons of the Levites; Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,)Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 D ei cantori: Eliasib. Dei portinai: Sallum, Telem e Uri.

And of the singers; Eliashib; and of the porters; Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

25 E degli Israeliti: dei figli di Paros: Ramia, Izzia, Malchia, Miiamin, Eleazar, Malchia e Benaia.

Likewise of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, Jeziah, Malchiah, Miamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 D ei figli di Elam: Mattania, Zaccaria, Ieiel, Abdi, Ieremot ed Elia.

And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Eliah.

27 D ei figli di Zattu: Elioenai, Eliasib, Mattania, Ieremot, Zabad e Aziza.

And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza.

28 D ei figli di Bebai: Iocanan, Anania, Zabbai, Atlai.

And of the sons of Bebai; Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai.

29 D ei figli di Bani: Mesullam, Malluc, Adaia, Iasub, Seal e Ramot.

And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Ramoth.

30 D ei figli di Paat-Moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaia, Maaseia, Mattania, Besaleel, Binnui e Manasse.

And of the sons of Pahath-moab; Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, Binnui, and Manasseh.

43 D ei figli di Nebo: Ieiel, Mattitia, Zabad, Zebina, Iaddai, Ioel, Benaia.

And of the sons of Nebo; Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, Joel, and Benaiah.

44 T utti questi avevano preso delle mogli straniere; e ce n’erano di quelli che da queste mogli avevano avuto dei figli.

All these had taken strange women, and there were women of theirs who had given birth to sons.
